- Joey McKenzie and Katie Glassman of the Western Flyer's entertain the audience with a couple of Swing tunes at the 20th Annual Willamette Valley Fiddle Contest, 2017. The 1st tune is "I Found A New Baby", the 2nd tune is a Bobby Hicks performed a lot. The tune, "Estrellita", was written by a Mexican composer, Manuel Ponce in 1912. It originally came into the repertoire with violinist Jascha Heifetz back in the '20s. Now, Joshua Bell and many violinists play it.
Joey and Katie, along with bassist Gavin Kelso, are members of the Western swing, jazz and old-time fiddle tunes band, The Western Flyers. The group recently won the Ameripolitan Award for "Best Western Swing Group". Joey grew up in Oregon and played in many, many contests here in his youth, but this is the first contest he's attended in Oregon in nearly 30 years.
Katie Glassman is one of the three judges for this years contest.

Impeccable guitar . . . lots of great second position intonation on the fiddle.
This song jumps . . . hops . . . its alive.
This duo brings it to life.
Stellar performance! Joey Mc Kenzie never fails to impress, I was not familiar with Katie Glassman, but that´s some great fiddle playing! Greetings from Austria:)
I love fiddling, but Joey McKenzie at work on the guitar is a thrill to watch.
Fantastic as usual. Both soloist and accompanist superb!

Hey Lyle, Estrellita is a tune that Bobby Hicks plays and plays very well indeed, however it is not his tune. It was written by a Mexican composer, Manuel Ponce in 1912. It originally came into the repertoire with violinist Jascha Heifetz back in the '20s. Now, Joshua Bell and many violinists play it. I don't know how it crossed over into the fiddle repertoire, but I first heard Dale Morris Sr playing it way back in the '70s. :)
I'll work on an update to the description tonight or tomorrow. That you very much for the information.
@@FiddleSupporter There are dozens of renditions by both fiddlers and violinists on youtube. I even put one up with me and Marshall Racowsky 3 yrs ago! ruclips.net/video/U_ik5aLU2s8/видео.html

Bobby Hicks did not write Erstellita. Here's a link to Jascha Heifetz playing it in 1928. But this is Bobby's version (note for note in the beginning...).
Beautiful.
I've been trying to find a transcription in G which seems to be very rare: I think Bobby (and Johnny Gimble) deserve some credit for pitching it in that key: perfect for fiddle!
@Barry Oconnor totally agree. I have stolen some of these wonderful double stops for myself.
@Barry Oconnor Just saw this. it was going to the wrong place in my gmail. I will listen!
@Barry Oconnor I love her voice but I have not yet found a video with her playing the violin. Thanks for letting me know.
@Barry Oconnor OK - I heard her on one video. I will listen to more. Thanks.
How do you spell a whistling noise??... great stuff...
Great tunes...anyone out there know the name of the first one?
Woody Aunan the first time is I Found A New Baby
@Barry Oconnor Estrellita was written by the (mostly) classical Mexican composer Manuel Ponce. He wrote many works for the 20th-century classical guitarist Andres Segovia.
Knockout!
