A whiter shade of pale is one of PROCOL HARUM'S Masterpieces. This song reminds me of my youth. Now I am 68 years old, but I still listen to this song. Thank you 👍👍 2020
I get it, dude. 73 here and this song impacts me as much now as fifty some years ago. The framework of this is Bach and the lyrics are magic. How could it miss?
I just turned 57. I am and have been through my life, a raging metal head with interests in Punk rock, ska rockabilly... but always the Gothy stuff... I love this song more than I can say.
Absolutely a masterpiece , using the master Bach as a guide or reference this band has created an incredible work of art unsurpassed by any of contemporary artists
From the era of music I grew up in...spent endless hours dreaming those dreams of youth...found the spirit and joy of love and the heart ache of those loves lost. Yet kept chasing all those dreams and grew into an adult who remembers...with fondness...all that passed before me! So glad I had the experience of living in that era of the the absolute "BEST MUSIC EVER"!!!
I'm 31, my dad was born in 1950, because of this I've grown up listening to music he used to listen to when he was a teenager, it's a blessing to be exposed to music from his era, I've come to love it more than he even does. When I was 15 everyone else my age was listening to dance music and drinking blue wicked, my friends and I were listening to The Eagles, Neil Young, Simon and Garfunkel, Bob Dylan, and every other 60's and 70's music we got our hands on, smoking blunt after blunt, good times... It was the 2000's but we lived in a musical era from the past.
This song was my signature song when I was still the lead vocal/lead guitarist of a professional band... Every night of our gig, this song is requested not once but thrice haha
I fell in love with this song from the first time I heard it in 1968. It's never old! The instrumentation blends superbly with the singing (I particularly avoid saying the lyrics which can't be understandable to all!)
"I was trying to conjure a mood as much as tell a straightforward, girl-leaves-boy story. With the ceiling flying away and room humming harder, I wanted to paint an image of a scene. I wasn’t trying to be mysterious with those images, I was trying to be evocative. I suppose it seems like a decadent scene I’m describing. But I was too young to have experienced any decadence, then. I might have been smoking when I conceived it, but not when I wrote. It was influenced by books, not drugs." Keith Reid ( Uncut Magazine, February 2008)
When i listen to this song.i close my eyes and it brings me back to my teenage years when i was dancing this song with my exhusband. Now i am dicorced and almost 60. I cant hold my tears.
My own interpretation because I've retold this fairytale many a times to my 3 children & my 6 grandchildren. It's not Poco Haram's meaning, solely my own. But the Miller drunkenly betrayed his daughter & viciously pimped her to the King. Her cards were dealt out & she played them as best she could. She brilliantly won as she became Queen, but ALL Wishes come with a price! Deary
Mum and dad's song when they met sadly not here always remembered never forgotten happy birthday dad and mother's Day mum lots of love hope you are celebrating in heaven with family ❤❤❤
We skipped the light fandango Turned cartwheels 'cross the floor I was feeling kinda seasick But the crowd called out for more The room was humming harder As the ceiling flew away When we called out for another drink The waiter brought a tray And so it was that later As the miller told his tale That her face, at first just ghostly, Turned a whiter shade of pale She said, 'There is no reason' And the truth is plain to see But I wandered through my playing cards And would not let her be One of sixteen vestal virgins Who were leaving for the coast And although my eyes were open They might have just as well've been closed And so it was that later As the miller told his tale That her face, at first just ghostly, Turned a whiter shade of pale
I used to hate this song. Back in the mid sixties when I listened to it, it just tore my heart out. Just out of the army and married my school/ neighborhood sweetheart. Married three days and she was gone.
This was the first song I danced with the girl I loved, then was our wedding song. Only recently learned the lyrics, they didn't matter though, the music swept us away into love.
The first time I heard this song when I was 12 yeras old...on that time I really enjoy. I never stop listened this song where ever I go....up now I'm still listen this song and play harmonica to follow the instrument...nice song
It means; that the girl was so upset -her face turned to a whiter shade of pale- because, either her lover left for war; or he was killed and more soldiers leaving to fight in a war.
I had no idea who sang this but I’m an old soul and after my scare with a snake 🐍 last night all I can say is I turned a whiter shade of pale… Had to look up song!

@Denis Price thanks! I'm 34 and even with the internet I can't figure it out but I have always loved it!
i read somewhere that its a song about a guy who's trying to impress a girl while they were in a cruise
me too :(
too emotional
Same here, except just a sentimental lump in the throat with no tears.
Well.... according to the artists, it sounds like a Dali painting put into words. LOL. OK, I get that. ruclips.net/video/Pf73XwjZIFQ/видео.html

The best thing about this song is if you listen to the old version and then listen to a newer version it sounds the same. Beautiful.
This song brings back so many memories it just sends my feelings all over the place! Love Procol !!!

Sure brings back memories!!
If 2020 had a theme song, this would be it. So sad and surreal.
This song was featured in an episode of "Cold Case." A show that aired in the 1990's.
Beautiful song.
And it is also played by Dr House in the piano in one chapter season 6..
First heard it in mid 70s as a kid,it gives me nostalgic feeling every time i heard it
John Lennon use to love this song, He listened to it religiously during the summer of 1967

One of my fav Procol Harum but I don't understand their song just I loved the melody, thanks!
Drums are flawless.
Bast Singer with best song. As has been said you don’t even need to know what’s happening. Just overwhelming.
Timeless
The distinctive organ melody makes the heart ache at the memory of the past
Gracias Gary Brooker . Gracias eternamente
I’m 69 now and the nostalgia this song evokes in me is ineffable.

Many thanks Procol Harum!!!
Am also one of the listeners this griefing tale of Miller’s song; and RIP.🌹🌹🌹to those gone in true tale.
We skipped the light fandango
Turned cartwheels 'cross the floor
I was feeling kinda seasick
But the crowd called out for more
The room was humming harder
As the ceiling flew away
When we called out for another drink
The waiter brought a tray
And so it was that later
As the miller told his tale
That her face, at first just ghostly,
Turned a whiter shade of pale
She said, 'There is no reason'
And the truth is plain to see
But I wandered through my playing cards
And would not let her be
One of sixteen vestal virgins
Who were leaving for the coast
And although my eyes were open
They might have just as well've been closed
And so it was that later
As the miller told his tale
That her face, at first just ghostly,
Turned a whiter shade of pale
This is my personal anthem
Wow beautiful song
Beatiful song I love it

Rip Gary.

Bach samples + When A Man Loves A Woman. There’s little original about this song but the guy’s voice and poetic lyrics make it something special.
