    This episode only reveals the identity of a handful of the veterans. "We Stand Alone Together" names many more, some seen in the series, and some not. Its a must watch.

    Babe Heffron and Bill Guarnere resumed their friendship after the war. When Babe returned to Philly after the war, he went to Bill’s place in their old neighborhood, where he found Bill out front, shooting craps with his buddies. Every day after that, for the rest of their long lives, they either saw in person or at least spoke with each other. They wrote a joint memoir, too.

    Please watch the “11th episode “or the “bonus episode.” It’s called “We Stand Alone Together.” You’ll get a few more faces and names. It’s actually the documentary from which they pulled the snippets of interviews from in the beginning of the Band of Brothers episodes. I don’t feel like any reaction to band of Brothers is complete without this reaction. I really hope you gentleman take the time to watch the 11th episode.

    There is a difference between SS and Wehrmacht. Also Austria was was incorporated into the Reich so there weren't as many Nazis in their armed forces. There was a MASSIVE difference between both and everything was NOT as clear cut as people think. Unfortunately this generation didn't get to grow up with WW2 veterans and survivors to get all the details.

    Since this series aired, I am pretty sure they have all passed away. Including Winters, and the writer of the book this show was based on.
    Edit: After a quick check, the last survivor of E company died in 2022.

      Yeah the last person who was named in the series was Ed Shames (who got a raw deal in the show). He gets a brief moment as a guy who thinks he has to shout all the time but no mention that he like Lipton was promoted from a non-comm or that at Foy he and Buck Rogers took out a Tank with a Bazooka. From the show you would have thought he was incompetent and widely disliked but neither was the case.

      The last remaining member of Easy Company was Bradford Freeman. He passed away 7/3/22.

  • @marcoburg8500
    @marcoburg8500 Месяц назад +12

    There are several minor errors in the series, but only a few big ones. Blythe was a big error. Probably considered a big error is that Easy Company did not discover the concentration camp. They arrived the next morning.
    In this episode, Webster did not accompany Liebgott and Sisk to the Nazi Commandant. It was another soldier. But Sisk did shoot him in the back as depicted. And Webster was not at the checkpoint when Janovec died in the car wreck. He found out later. Webster and Janovec were buddies, so it hit him hard.
    In 'The Last Patrol', Webster was providing cover from a river side window, he was not on the patrol.
    Nixon did have his helmet shot off and the bullet grazed his forehead, but not at that particular point in the war.
    Winter's was not so far ahead running at the crossroads because the smoke grenade was late, he was just that fast a runner.
    This episode showed Winters allowing the surrendering German officer to keep his sidearm. Either this is incorrect, or Winters accepted other surrenders, and accepted the pistol a different time. Winters himself shows a surrendered pistol in the "We Stand Alone Together" documentary.
    It was probably already stated in Ep 6 comments, that there is no proof that Doc Roe had ever met the nurse Renee, but that possibility was too good to pass up.
    The next step for you, to see what all the discrepancies are is to read the original book, by Stephen Ambrose, and Winter's book, and Webster's book. Malarkey, Shifty, Spiers, Guarnere and Heffron all have books out as well, perhaps others.

    • @rayvanhorn1534
      @rayvanhorn1534 Месяц назад +6

      I read an article that the pistol he had was from another officer, as he was tasked with several official duties to accept unit surrenders.

    • @dudermcdudeface3674
      @dudermcdudeface3674 Месяц назад +2

      The pistol scene in the miniseries is, I think, meant to symbolize Winters' general disgust with the kind of people he encountered in the German high command. He considered them cold-blooded savages, which they absolutely were. The German in the scene doesn't get it at all. Winters just wants to go home, and this maniac is talking like he's been deprived of a game. That's how Winters saw them.

  • @marcus914
    @marcus914 Месяц назад +1

    Letting him keep his sidearm is a sign of respect, and they are two alike men on different side of history, who experienced the war much alike. It is important in these times to remember, to be better than the enemy. They are people aswell.

    The other text error is in Episode 9, the date on screen when Nix announced Hitler is dead is wrong.
    If you're going to read any books, I like Winters' memoirs the most (he has a few). Just get them from your library. They're worth it for the photos alone. A lot of the other men also wrote books. Perhaps most interesting is Parachute Infantry by Webster, as it was written decades before the Band of Brothers book or show, so it's not influenced by either. I believe some of Webster's narration in Episode 8 is taken directly from the book.
    And yes, you must watch The Pacific!

    The other error on a title card (other than the incorrect info about Blythe) is in the beginning of Ep. 9 "Why We Fight", it says the date is April 11th and at the end, on the same day, Nixon tells them that the guy with the little mustache was dead in Berlin, but that didn't happen until April 30th.

    Easy Company is the most ironic name in military history. From D-DAY all the way to Hitler's Eagle's Nest, there was nothing Easy about it. I never want things I love to end, but you want the pain to end for these Men, and the peace to begin. The German Field Marshall's speech is actually what ties the entire concept of of the series together unexpectedly...No matter what side you were on you were suffering. I implore you to see "We Stand Alone Together" and Ron Livingston's (Nixon) Bootcamp Diary. It makes you appreciate the series even more. "Were you a hero in the War Grandpa? Grandpa says no, but I served in a company of heroes" Near tears every time. Thank you so much for taking this journey...Currahee! ♠
    Winters may be the best, and Nixon may be one of the most entertaining. But Spiers might be my favorite. Also watch "The Fallen of World War 2" to get some perspective on the scale of this tragedy.

    Like every episode of Band of Brothers, there are fictional elements, omissions, and embellishments in episode 10 but I will only highlight a few:
    1) Contrary to what is shown in Band of Brothers, Berchtesgaden was captured in the afternoon of May 4, 1945 by the 7th Infantry Regiment of the 3rd Infantry Division with the French 2nd Armored Division arriving later that afternoon and the 101st arriving in the morning of May 5.
    2) Members of the 7th Infantry Regiment and the French 2nd Armored Division claim to have reached the Eagle's Nest hours before members of the 101st, and many historians accept these claims (e.g., National WW2 Museum).
    3) There is no evidence that members of Easy Company killed an unnamed commandant of unnamed concentration camp. What is shown in Band of Brothers is strikingly similar to the killing of Franz Ziereis who had been commandant of Mauthausen. Like the commandant in Band of Brothers, Franz Ziereis was hiding out in a mountain cabin when U.S. soldiers, who had been given a tip, went to the cabin to arrest him. Franz Ziereis was shot three times trying to escape.

    Something that comes up in the last episode that is not fully explained is the Adjusted Service Rating Score...which is what the "points" they keep referring to is about. The Army needed a system to prioritize the people that were deployed overseas, and decide in what order folks would get to go home, since not everyone could go home at the same time. The system heavily prioritized people with children under the age of 18 to get them home as soon as possible, and focused on medals awarded and time in service overseas as other criteria.

    There are actually a lot or errors - it's sort of the nature of the thing as it relies on peoples personal memories and as we all know memory can be unreliable. There are errors of omission like not giving Dike credit for his actual actions at Bastogne or Shames being shown to be an unlikeable shouty officer who isn't competent but who actually was promoted from a non-comm like Lipton because he was very competent and who took out a Tank with Buck Rogers at Foy. They get the dates mixed up in Episode 9 about Hitler's death which is probably the text error people mentioned. People do things that other people actually did like the Last Patrol having some people involved who actually weren't, that tends to be because certain people weren't included because there would simply be too many characters and it would become hard to follow. None of the errors destroy the show - it's just as with any historical re-enactment there will always tend to be minor issues with the finer details.

    You asked about the point system they system had several aspects to it. Each man received 1 point for each month in the service, they got 1 additional point for each month spent deployed in the war zone. They got 5 points for a medal. IE Purple Heart, Bronze Star, Silver Star etc. They also got points if they were married and points if they had children.
    The last surving member of Easy Company passed away about a year and a half ago. If hope you are planning on watching / reacting to the Documentarty that was made along with this series called We Stand Alone Together. The German soldiers had very little to do with the German politics. When you walk the German cemetery in Normandy you see thousands of boys who were 11-12 when the war started... these kids had nothing to do with the nazi policies... The civilians however who let either supported it or believed it was not their duty to oppose it in the 1930s, or the ones living near the camps, are the problem. Those and the SS soldier, who were the military contingent of the Nazi party. But the regular soldiers, nah, they were hardly part of the evil.

    You realize they can't just execute every mid level Wehrmacht commander for no reason right? Though the Wehrmacht, particularly on the Eastern Front was responsible for many war crimes, the rank and file were just that, and there was a still a decent amount of respect on the military side to the West (not from Soviets, for obvious reasons). If you were SS, though, that is another matter.
