These knives are very beautiful but really bulky. I feel the whole FREE series is rather undercooked and very much overpriced aswell! Nevertheless, this new series of Leathermans is visually very beautiful and idea/design wise very much on the right track. Leatherman will get the according feedback and make the right changes, I think. I hope they will get it where it needs to be.
The K series is just too large. I could tell it was going to be too fat from the marketing pictures. They were very careful to not show the fat angle of the knife. That being said, I do love the P2.
I, for one, absolutely love the k4. The bulk of it makes it really feel substantial when I carry it. The only way it could be made better is with an interchangeable bit set, which could probably sit nicely into the spare space on the handle. The large size is more apt for different tasks and it's making a great sophomore addition to my Leatherman collection.
When buying my Free P4, it came with a pocket clip pre-installed. So it's possible that at the time you purchased it, your P4 was a production line that didn't have it installed, and when reviews came back saying how it was kind of odd to not have the clip come with the tool, they started the lines after with the clip installed. at least, that's my guess. Just recently got the K2X, and it to, has the clip.
I ordered a K4 & K4X. I had to exchange the K4 for the same to tight my Thumb was killing me and I tried everything and it wasn't loosening up the replacement they sent is perfect as easy to deploy tools as the T & P series Free. The K series is a glovebox or backpack carry for me. I have been Pocket carrying the T2 & T4 and like both.
What I would love to see would be a thinner version with the ability to only choose 2 tools but come with all of them to interchange and personally I stand behind my letterman now I know I have the original and not many other from them but my Marlboro miles multi is amazing and I’ve been carrying it for 17 years and my dad many before that
I have a K2 that I EDC along with my Micra and Rebar. A couple of days ago I bought a K4 and dropped the Micra. Now my EDC is much lighter plus I can quickly deploy the scissors one-handed. But the K2 is lighter, quicker in the hands and feels more comfortable. Cheers...
I got the K4 as soon as it became available, noticed a bit of tightness on the rear tools as compared to my P4, but a bit of nano lube in the right spots cleared that up.
I was looking for an excuse for buying a new knife I guess I got my birthday/Christmas gift all rolled up in one. I use both my victorinox and my leatherman Wingman daily.
Good video. Thanks for posting. I bought both a T4 and K4 and like both. The T4 is probably better suited to my EDC needs because it is smaller and has both a file/mid sized screwdriver, and a tweezers. I removed the pocket clips from both T4 and K4 and sheath carry them (one at a time) on my belt. The tools in my K4 were hard to open due to the magnet, so I placed a small piece of duct tape over the magnet, reducing the attraction force. Now, the blades open more easily, but do not flop out.
They look like rugged and reliable tools for camping, with the larger blade and tool selection. The awl comes in particularly handy for woodcraft. However, for general survival purposes the traditional Leatherman line would be potentially more useful, having the greater variety of tools.
Oh, the best tool out of the both of 'em is the "Wave" - hands down! Zero problem there. The whole FREE series is completely unatractive to me until this point. And I cannot believe that Mr. Leatherman designed that. So ... I have no clue what this is supposed to be about, but it is frustrating for sure!
This was my biggest disappointment of the Free series. Not necessarily because it’s bad, but I was just expecting something else. Still a great tool for work though.
I picked one up at Lowes 2 days ago and it seems pretty much bomb proof like all Leatherman products . It would be a better knife if they used D-2 tool steel blades . Great review and thanks .
I hope this serie is better made than my P4. I had to return two unit to Leatherman to get one that was opening properly and had proper blade. Even the last unit I've receive is poorly machined and have many small defects. Either Leatherman quality is down the drain or the first release of the P4 was rushed but I'm not getting anymore products from them.
I’ve carried a super tool 300 since my 200 was beyond fixing. I also carry a leatherman style cs. I would carry this if they they used the k series to add scissors, small pliers, tweezers, and a bottle opener. So basically if I could combine the style cs and ps with a k series platform ;think it would be the perfect modern “Swiss knife”, but made in America. I’m just waiting for leatherman to have a build your own tool option.
I have a T4. Too short and chunky and I prefer the tip up clip but that is not an option on the T4. This K2 is just about the right size for me. Right now, it is my go to EDC. I think I would love a Crater in the same size though. With a tip up clip of course. Nice review.
I'll be sticking with the same tool I have been carrying since they came out with it... The wave. Along with my hand stitched wet formed holster for it that I copied from my original leatherman wave holster, after I wore it completely out. Sad that they don't have a full leather holster anymore. Also kind of sad that their quality seems to have gone down hill. My last few waves have been super stiff, and I don't like the courser jaw knurling. Also I have had some issues with the jaws sticking so that won't open. Oh well, I love my wave, I will be sad if it is ever dis-continued.
Had no interest when they first came out but i was just reviewing my thoughts. Now i recall why they lost me. If they ever make a K4 Mini closer to the size of the T4, I'll be all over it!
I've been a Leatherman fan for years, but I'm far from impressed with this "new generation" of products. I carry the Leatherman Super Tool 300 everyday, it's on my belt anytime I walk out the door. But this new line is something I'm staying away from. My coworkers (in the lumber business) have already said the same. We were offered a 10% company discount, and not a single one of these has been sold. The Super Tool 300, Rebar, Wingman, Rev and Wave lines are what sells, they are time tested designs. I'll wait for Leatherman to come out with something else, these are not directed towards working men. A while back I made a custom Leatherman pocket knife, using the monoblock frame from the Wingman and the plates from the Rev, the Rev knife blade, and 6 tool accessory blades on the back, there's a video here on RUclips about a similar design if anyone is interested in making their own. It seems like many of these great companies are trying to be more "futuristic"... Harley Davidson is focused on making electric motorcycles now... SMH!
Good blade but it would be nice to have it in a better steel. The tools selection is, however, not complete without a can opener. So in addition to this, one has to carry a SAK.
Not insulting, truly wondering. How iften have you had to use the can opener function? My gripe is that knives like the Vic Farmer are ruined because they include can/bottle opener. I've only ever needed mine once, personally. And still could have done without it, technically.
trevor Well, technically one could do without a knife - there is almost always an alternate way) Frankly, I happen to use the can opener about once a week (on the average). Me thinks, it is not only how often one uses it, but also what to do if you need it but don’t have it - say you are out camping, and you have several cans but kinda left the dedicated (and heavy) opener at home... I realize that this is a matter of personal preference; I feel that I often use all tools that SAK has to offer, even the saw. IMHO, this Leatherman is a nice knife overall, and I’ll buy it regardless... I just love knives!))
Thanks so much for this review. With no place around where I live to check them out in person, youve made it clear that this is NOT the tool I was looking for. I was hoping these were going to be similar in size to the T series, maybe just a little longer and a little thinner... but as you said, the size of these knives pushes them WAY out of the EDC category for me. I have a T4... I like it other than its crazy thick. I got it VS the T2 because of hte scissors. I wish leatherman would build a tool thats slim but still has a good blade AND scissors. I dont need an awl... I have NEVER used one on any of my multi tools. But I use the scissors almost every day.
Excellent presentation and review. Just ordered the k4. I'm a knife and multitool collector. This will be a great addition :-) Subscribed to your channel
Just got my k4x and honestly don’t mind the size but would have preferred that the case/handle material was the same steel as my free p4. The material they used to save weight does feel kind of cheap but time will tell.
More as an EDC to stop putting mileage on my Microtech Ultratech. My go to for work is the P4 (which replaced the Wave I’ve been carrying for years). P4 is always on me so basically it’s also an EDC.
Wow, those seem way too big for what they are and do! Dang! I wish the T2 would come in a partially serrated blade, it would be tempting. I'm gonna stick with the Skeletool in my pocket and the Squirt PS4 on my keychain. I just look around occasionally, lol. Thanks for the heads up comparison. Oh yeah... LM sells a nice bit kit very inexpensively. All the Torx (and other stuff) you will ever need. I keep mine in the sheath with the Wave in my Jeep Wrangler glovebox.
I have the bit kit for my Wave. But it was in my backpack when my car was recently broken into and all of my tools were stolen. They didn’t get my Leathermans though. Just the bits and other tools.
@@ChrispyThings well that sucks! I left the city 25 years ago and would never go back for love or money. Especially how the crazies have been in the streets this past year. I'm happy in the country and I still never go unarmed, lol. Best of luck to you, I hope you get the tools back or thr insurance can help.
Really hate how leatherman always puts a partially serrated blade on the cheaper model to encourage buying the more expensive one. Both of them are a hard pass considering the competition in their price ranges.
But no scissors. I'd ditch all these Free series tools for a cx that adds scissors. You're right. The CX is the perfect EDC. But boy I wish it had scissors on board
Thanks for doing a review on these . I was just looking at them today at sportsmans warehouse. One thing I use a lot of times on my knives is the benchmade blue lube it really helps to loosen new knives up.
they don't provide the saw. why they don't build a combination of tools similar or even better than Ruike LD42D, it is almost the perfect medium size outdoor multitool knife. Another thing I don't like are rivets. Leatherman should be an INDUSTRIAL competitor with Victorinox. Victorinox is riveted, you take it as it is... The real added value in some Leatherman products is customization... you can dismount the tools to clean, to comfy sharpen it, to modify it and than reassembly it again I think this should be enphatized as a virtu... Coast Cutlery discontinued the keychain microtoolbox. the basic idea were not bad, only the product was a litte poor... of course leatherman can do it better.
That’s fine. You can EDC anything you want. But it’s all about personal preference here. And I still think this is too large to carry everyday. Work? Then yes I can see it.
Its not the bulk hat bothers me but the weight. Its a multitool so its always going to be bulky but the weight of the K series is why I went with a T4. I just got my t4 so the jury is still out but I sure appreciate the lighter weight and pocket clip. I love my victrinox alox pioneer but the lack of a pocket clip is the reason I'm on my 3rd one. And the alox models ain't cheap. I's love to just carry my leather wave around all day but its just to heavy to be in my edc. Its a bag only tool for me. I like my pocket tools to be around 3 oz or less if possible. It all starts to add up and next thing you know your pants are falling down. 😂😂
You need to out disclaimer of "i have tiny hands dont use my hands as reference " because holy man I have they knife and it looks large as hell in your hand
Not my thing, I can see an application for it but I think the whole line will fade out in the years to come. It’s just not a viable replacement for a juice in my opinion
I love my T4, perfect size for EDC but if I am in the market for a 3.5 inch blade, Ruike LD31B would be a much better buy with similar-sized blade and G10 handle, better steel, and half the price of a K4. Also, K4 is WAY too thick for the number of the tool it has and for that price I would expect a 154CM if not S30V blade
I bought a torx bit that fits. It’s a T9. Loosened then used nano lube and now it’s pretty good. They all don’t come that tight. The K2X was absolutely perfect as I showed in the video. The 4 was almost unusable
@@ChrispyThings Pulled the trigger after this video (thanks for posting) and purchased the K4x as my EDC instead of my T4. The size difference between the two is incredible, but what a workhorse of a knife. Slight adjustment with the screws, and it works like butter.
Man this is the worst name ever LOL... When I logged onto Leatherman's site to buy a clip... it said "Free Lanyard Ring and Pocket Clip" ... I got excited because I thought they were giving the clips away for free! Anyway my K2 is super tight also. I think it's just poor quality control. They are probably just trying to pump out as many as they can at the expense of a little quality control.
The screwdriver/awl combination looks problematic. The tip seems too wide to be an effective awl, but also too narrow to function well as a screwdriver.
My T4 never made it to my pocket. It lives in my drawer and is used once a week. I use my spyderco delica4 the most and carry a small sak and a flashlight. The free series is to fat and clunky.
I love the new Leatherman free series, there's just a couple of downsides.. I dislike the Philips, Victorinox has a much much better one, and Leatherman always has these tools that I literally never use
Rickyboyz 100 Oh. Did I say I didn’t want it? Well then hey! Here you go! OR, how about I give you the 90 bucks to just buy one for yourself! I’m also giving out free back rubs and foot massages too, interested??
I hope they will get it where it needs to be. I really would like to buy a Wave FREE in a smaller form factor in the new style! But all of this is just undercooked ...
This could've been a great tool, 420hc is absolute trash steel, I wouldn't even consider this a knife/multi tool. Why not use 154cm like on the skeletool
Why are Leatherman's so overpriced. Every one of them I have ever bought costs too much and I have never paid full price. For 420hc, I think the K4 is $20-30 overpriced.
What are your thoughts on the new Leatherman Free K series?

Was interested but seeing the size, it's just too big for pocket clip carry, which I was considering.
The K series is just too large. I could tell it was going to be too fat from the marketing pictures. They were very careful to not show the fat angle of the knife. That being said, I do love the P2.

I love my K4. Use it probably the most around the house. If they brought out a magnacut blade version it would be amazing

I carry a Leatherman Free T4 and really enjoy it. The K Series is just too big for an EDC. 🙏🏻
Agreed.
They look like rugged and reliable tools for camping, with the larger blade and tool selection. The awl comes in particularly handy for woodcraft. However, for general survival purposes the traditional Leatherman line would be potentially more useful, having the greater variety of tools.
Both are superior! Leatherman knocked it out of the park. Have K4 preferably larger-yes… but, you have more options.
Good vid!
The p4s now come with a pocket clip. I just emailed them and asked for one, and they sent me one no charge.👍🏽
Ha. Well they owe me 12 bucks!
I want a K4. This could come in handy with my kind of work. I carry a wave on my belt. This could be very useful for me
I got a Free K4. It is big, but I like it a lot so far.
I like carrying the Leatherman signal and the Victorinox field master as edc tools

Pretty sure the blade style is sheepsfoot, not drop point.

Thanks for watching.
Yours was super tight too? I thought I just had wimpy thumbs.
I’m just gonna stick with a victorinox If they’re this big

Look a tad on the large size for my liking, plus I'm in the UK so locking blade, especially that big, is a no no.
Can you have a leatherman wave or does it count as a knife?
Crocodile Dundee: ...Ok, that's a knife.
whys it gotta be so damn big jeez so much for edc
what's the point of a tool if its too small for the job at hand......if this doesn't suit your needs, move on.

Very good! Thank you.
thanks for the review.
what do you think about the guys who EDC the surge?
That’s fine. You can EDC anything you want. But it’s all about personal preference here. And I still think this is too large to carry everyday. Work? Then yes I can see it.
I have the K4. Way too wide for me. The pocket clip adds serious hotspots and makes it uncomfortable to use the knife for extended periods.
*_Now that's a knife_*
Need more color offerings
These knives are very beautiful but really bulky. I feel the whole FREE series is rather undercooked and very much overpriced aswell! If the K4 had a saw instead of scissors like my Alox Farmer, I’d own the K4.
No way. Keep the scissors. Add the saw. But take away the package opener/pryer. Now there’s the combo.
Love that blade design but too big for me, I'll pass. Thanks for the review though.
Possibly. I wouldn’t say my hands are tiny, but definitely not large.
And no I’m not putting that as a disclaimer...I mean seriously?
Not my thing, I can see an application for it but I think the whole line will fade out in the years to come. It’s just not a viable replacement for a juice in my opinion
I love my T4, perfect size for EDC but if I am in the market for a 3.5 inch blade, Ruike LD31B would be a much better buy with similar-sized blade and G10 handle, better steel, and half the price of a K4. Also, K4 is WAY too thick for the number of the tool it has and for that price I would expect a 154CM if not S30V blade
Leatherman needs to up their steel game for the next set of tools they come out with.
It's a very good one ..
They all come tight...but when you EDC it for a few weeks, it loosens up.
How much for this?
Man this is the worst name ever LOL... When I logged onto Leatherman's site to buy a clip... it said "Free Lanyard Ring and Pocket Clip" ... I got excited because I thought they were giving the clips away for free! Anyway my K2 is super tight also. I think it's just poor quality control. They are probably just trying to pump out as many as they can at the expense of a little quality control.
My P4 came with a lanyard and I called Leatherman and they've sent me a free free P4 pocket clip. Now they package it apparently.
The screwdriver/awl combination looks problematic. The tip seems too wide to be an effective awl, but also too narrow to function well as a screwdriver.
It’s baffling.
I like K4
My T4 never made it to my pocket. It lives in my drawer and is used once a week. I use my spyderco delica4 the most and carry a small sak and a flashlight. The free series is to fat and clunky.
Be ordering one soon👍
I love the new Leatherman free series, there's just a couple of downsides.. I dislike the Philips, Victorinox has a much much better one, and Leatherman always has these tools that I literally never use
No saw?
Nope. For me, the perfect tools would be straight blade, scissors, Phillips head, saw and metal/wood file.
It all depends on what you use it for
Yes true
Can I have the K4 if you don't want it?
Rickyboyz 100 Oh. Did I say I didn’t want it? Well then hey! Here you go! OR, how about I give you the 90 bucks to just buy one for yourself! I’m also giving out free back rubs and foot massages too, interested??
@@ChrispyThings I am interested! Back's been killing me this year. Otherwise great review, thanks!
Great review

K4...wins
The whole free series is gimmicky and disappointing. Guess they couldn’t improve on the Surge/Wave.
I hope they will get it where it needs to be.
I really would like to buy a Wave FREE in a smaller form factor in the new style!
But all of this is just undercooked ...
Way too big and way too heavy. The market still needs a Victorinox type with a real good blade. Disappointing...
skeletool cx
They are very bulky, rather just carry my wave and my BM 940 for a knife.
Leatherman still can't use a good knife steel despite all the advances in modern metallurgy. S30V at least guys.
SailfishSoundSystem 100% agree.
These are too big to be legally worn/ carried in OZ now due to the laws we have.
What is the max blade length you can carry there?
OZ? Where the fuck is that?
Add some oil and break it in
I actually did today. KPL knife pivot lube. Hopefully it loosens it up.
Cool but too big
poor scissor. all the free series
This knife is not work only I carry it everyday. It's not that big. Love my k4 worth every penny.
Thanks!
This could've been a great tool, 420hc is absolute trash steel, I wouldn't even consider this a knife/multi tool. Why not use 154cm like on the skeletool
Lost me at 420hc
Why are Leatherman's so overpriced. Every one of them I have ever bought costs too much and I have never paid full price. For 420hc, I think the K4 is $20-30 overpriced.
The Free series is overpriced. For the price they ask I’d like to see D2 blades at the very least.
@@ChrispyThings more like vg10. D2 rusts up too easy. Especially if you live along the coast. My Leatherman tools rust up now at 420HC.
Ranger grip much better
I like bigger.
