    Installed a bidet for myself about a year ago and love it. I rather dry myself than clean myself any day, plus it does a much better job of cleaning. Always wondered how it would work on a composting toilet, now I know, and it's great news. Thanks for posting this and looking forward to your next video.

      It is a perfect benefit! We use a urine seperator to keep the smell non existent, because we do not have any pee in our compost we don't need to empty it as often. The problem with having a completely dry bucket added to the compost pile is we have to add water so we can achieve thermophilic bacteria. With the added water from the bidet it keeps the moisture content of the compost perfect so we do not need to add water to our pile outside. The other benefit is just that little bit of water keeps the pail nice and clean and we get double the time before we have to empty it (less toilet paper and sawdust needed). AND the nitrogen to carbon ratio is much better too because there is a higher ratio of 💩 to sawdust (very high in carbon). Literally NO drawbacks after the install.
      Thanks for the sub, we are going to do an update video in the future for sure.

      @@ThisOffGridLife Here’s a Thing…
      Some buttholes are oddly shaped (by birth or by poor surgical reconstruction, or by certain other…umm…practices)…often causing a splatter effect that would that little rear-bidet-wand at the back…on some models worse than others, potentially causing spread of biota to the forward parts of female genitalia. Which can cause UTIs in females.
      THAT is a bad thing.
      Technically, female nether-regions should be either:
      A) wiped from front-to-back, Or,
      B) sprayed from front-to-back.
      We found a handheld sprayer with choices of sprayer heads & lengths of wand, that hooks to a water supply (either water supply to normal toilet, or, other plumbing), on AMZN, for around $40. It is handheld, so, Anatomical females can spray from front-to-back, & anatomical males can use it from the rear.
      There were VERY good reasons, girls are taught to do this. Do NOT let the male-dominant bidet market fool you, Chicas! It matter!
      And, since poo buckets can get too dry to work right, this also helps add some water to that.
      Also, to boost efficacy of composting bucket contents, add some red wiggles worms! Ana Eddy (sp.?) wrote the book “Solviva” (look online). She did MUCH research & tinkering about this…she discovered those little creatures actually abate coliform bacteria (which is what authorities worry most about spreading to groundwater). Those will compost the solids faster than without, as long as the bucket is in their favorite temp range..about what average houses are. Or a greenhouse. Anyone interested, could learn a Large amount of very sensible info about it…maybe more than ya wanna. The book isn’t even very thick, nor is it high-grade science-talk…just down-to-earth good sense.

      No idea why the function buttons stopped working since the OS15 bunch of updates…could be Gaagle, too.
      But, posting this, deleted a couple things 😠, now, can’t edit.
      …the splatter from misguided poop can splatter the rear sprayer spigots.
      That can cause infections for women, & they wouldn’t connect the infection, to the “clean” use of a bidet. They & their docs would just keep throwing antibiotics at the recurring infections, making the person sicker over time, never solving the real problem.
      Bidets started out as a separate toilet-looking thing…which was big enuf, males could sit facing room, & females could sit facing the wall, to assure spray washing their respective undercarriages the right direction. Few have that much room. Enter: the modern units…which all spray from the rear….not one bit of consideration for female requirements!
      Of course, mileage may vary, because everyone’s different.
      But, there’s NO WAY it’s sanitary/safe for females to use rear spray bidets, ESPecially if many people use the facility.

    This is such a great idea! I think this could work for a Clivus Multrum style composting toilet with a big ventilated tank (IBC) for long-term composting in a cellar below. Except like you do, by separating #1 and #2.
    By adding red wriggler worms (Eisenia fetida) to the tank (vermicomposting), the #2 would break down so fast that you'd very rarely have to empty it (decades even). The worms do require a moist compost pile, which is why #1 is not separated in Clivus style toilets. But with a bidet, I think maybe you can.
    Not mixing #1 and #2 makes the liquid output (straight from #1 only in this case) much safer to use as fertilizer. That has been my main concern with Clivus style toilets. (I suppose you'd still need to drain some leachate from the tank, which wouldn't be as safe to use.)
    I love how adding a luxury item to a composting toilet can actually improve on both the composting (vermicomposting, safer liquid fertilizer) and the bidet (safer due to no splashing). This is so much better than a WC. Add a heated toilet seat and you're in toilet heaven!

    • @ThisOffGridLife
      @ThisOffGridLife  3 года назад +7

      Water goes into the bucket not the urine diverter. We have found quickly that filling the bucket takes at least twice as long due to hardly any toilet paper in the bucket (and less sawdust required). Also the moisture content is absolutely perfect to add to the compost pile when the bucket is full, not to mention that little bit of water in the mix helps keep the bucket clean! Win win win !!!

Which type of composting material do you use?

    • @ThisOffGridLife

    • @theresahartman7465
      @theresahartman7465 3 года назад +4

      Well, even if only you switch, it will lessen the impact on your composting! And eventually, he’ll realize he only really needs to dry off after using the bidet, so it rarely gets very dirty. For sanitizing, I use a hyperchlorous solution that I make by using a bottle that puts electricity through salt water to separate the chloride from the sodium, so it behaves like bleach but breaks down into a solution that is harmless to the environment. I love it, and it’s so much cheaper than other cleaners!

    Your answer depends on how you treat your waste after it leaves the bucket. All humanure systems I know do not base its effectiveness in getting to that 55 degree C temperature, but in killing pathogens with time in an aerobic environment. Getting and maintaining that temperature is not an easy task; keeping poop dry and aerated is quite simple. I'm hoping your follow-up will show how you maintain that temperature. Thanks! PS: if you are maintaining this temperature, I hope you are using that heat for ancillary purposes as well, like building a greenhouse over it to produce food through the winter.

    • @ThisOffGridLife
      @ThisOffGridLife  3 года назад +1

      In the warmer months it's no issue keeping the compost pile at 55 degrees. But usually in the winter it is less. We are not set up to use the heat created by it but its in the summer so it wouldn't matter anyways. We'll definitely do another video on the compost pile. We do have one but it's an earlier video and let's just say our video quality has improved since then

      Radie Morgan- traveling folk with a compost toilet need to set up some compost locations with land anchored friends to stop and leave their material for friend to compost after they leave. y.... or add a compost holding tank? Maybe heat it with engine exhaust a bit? IMHO those who do not do this are being anti-environmental .... and if you dont care about environmental shiat (pardon the pun) they are just being GROSS dumping the NOT composted yet material where ever, when ever; even though it is legal... unless of course they actually stop at a waste treatment plant to dump it.. which is an option according to a friend who works at one.
      what do you recommend users of the ones you build to do with their "not yet composted" material when on their journeys?

      There a few comments here that we have addressed that topic. There no issues, we typically had to add moisture because it is dry here. If it's going to rain a lot, we'll tarp the compost pile. But otherwise, business as usual

    I was trawling youtube for the workings of an old terraced house outhouse tipum toilet and you cam up. This is the second vlog on the toilet but I have a question. I understand the analogy about 'would you just wipe poo off your hand with a paper towel?' But my question is...... not all bowel movements are swift and complete. If you have a suspected incomplete movement and use the water douche then how do you know your butthole is clean? Even if you had a swift movement, how would you know it is clean. I understand the positives and I'm fully 'behind' this but...... how do you know? Do you still have to use some toilet paper to check and dry? Or do you use a cloth towel? I really enjoyed these two vlogs and you have a new sub from Stafford England UK 🇬🇧.

We just did a video about installing a seprett composting toilet in our house (haven't fully used yet) but we are adding a bum gun to it because we love the bidet, but aren't able to add it to the new toilet. We also talk about why we are switching to the new toilet and where you can get one ( canadianoffgriddepot.com )

    95% of my toilet paper gets shoved into the cardboard tube of the previous roll(s) of toilet paper. It then provides HEAT for me in the winter as it gets burned in the wood stove. Not new normal..... but logical normal. And saves water compared to bidet.. a huge thing in a smaller rig.

  • @timskufca8039

    adding any liquid to the compost hinders the effectiveness of the composting process. It is why there is a urine diverter built into the compost toilet seat. This will greatly extend the composting time. Use toilet paper for a composting toilet, use this bidet devise with a regular flush toilet.

    • @ThisOffGridLife
      @ThisOffGridLife  3 года назад +7

      Actually a dry compost will have difficulty becoming thermophilic, you need the compost moist but not wet for the compost pile to reach 55°c in order to kill pathogens. The bidet is a perfect solution to keep that right level of moisture achieved!

      I've never heard of this before. We have very big compost piles on our farm & we compost pretty much everything. Maybe it's different for toilets but if we get a dry spell with no rain our piles don't cook as well. Dry materials don't compost very well.
