It's an editing style. It helps with the overall look. There's an app I write for, and if you regularly direct an overlay w no easing functions it'll just move linear. Easing functions give it more life; it's visually more pleasing.
You write everything exactly like in the clip until 2:33 and then you stop writing and delete : background: linear-gradient(to top, ⬛rgba(0,0,0,0.5)50% ,⬛rgba(0,0,0,0.5)50%), url(1.jpg);
