  • Now you can do your part to fight the invasive lionfish-by ordering a delectable dish from a dinner menu. Divers and chefs are promoting a gastronomical way to control the venomous lionfish population in Florida's coastal waters by introducing the invasive species to the American palate. The non-native lionfish lacks natural predators and is harming native wildlife and habitat. But Pot Roast & Pinot in Pensacola, Florida, is just one restaurant that has found the fish to be tasty enough to add to its menu. The restaurant has partnered with licensed harvesters who can capture hundreds of pounds of lionfish in one dive. The hope is to create a viable commercial industry and save Florida's marine environment by eradicating the lionfish population one bite at a time.

    Notice how they don't swim away when one gets speared right near them? they're not used to being afraid of anything as they have no predators.

    So many people dislike this video because animals get killed in it, but they don't realise that there is an invasion of lionfish, who don't have predators and eat too much fish in the ocean.
    And those dislikers will most of the time just eat KFC or MacDonalds at the evening, but that "isn't meat from animals"...

      This is a problem that we have created by introducing them into ecosystems that they hadn't evolved in. It is highly unethical to mass slaughter them when we ourselves are responsible for the situation.
      In this case there is no financial incentive to solve the problem efficiently, i.e. to mass capture and release into their natural habitat, after sterilisation.
      The problem, outside of ethics, with consuming them is that once there are sufficient rates of hunting to begin diminishing the population, there would be enough of a market to incentivise farming or repopulation once scarcity occurs.

      Actually, what we're seeing is lion fish moving to depths beyond the recreational limit of divers. As this diver noted, he was at about 120 feet and the recreational limit is 130 feet. But lion fish are going deeper still. If you go to popular dive locations, you'll see very few. But when you go anywhere off the beaten path, you'll realize just how bad the problem is. On the plus side, they make excellent ceviche.

    • @vaspiov9335
      @vaspiov9335 7 лет назад +3

      Robert H They do. Only the top inch or so of the spines have the venom mechanism

      the venom can bring so much pain. but is not deadly. and the heat is destroying the toxic. you're welcome

      The ammount of heat used in cooking them, breaks apart the chemical compounds which make up the poison.

    Why you people don't do the same thing with the northern snakehead. It delicious fish and good for wound healing because it flesh contain a lot of albumin. We in Indonesia, a giant snakehead a.k.a toman or red snakehead and common snakehead is kind of pricey consumption fish.

    I can't remember specifics but i do remember that there was an invasive species of snake and they were maid very profitable to sell but instead of people going out and getting them people breed them and sold them that way, when people found out they stop buying the snakes so people just released them and they had a huge population boom worse than it was before.

      You're thinking Britain colony in India trying to curb the cobra population.
      That's why FL monitors their python hunters. I think they even use a tracking app to ensure they are actually going into the wild.
