You can do the figure 8 wrist roll. Now learn the opposite wrist roll so you can turn 180 degrees any time! This will unlock a ton of awesomeness +1. Learn this move.
i have now mastered the reverse figer 8 wrist roll, by far the most difficult move I had to learn so far.
thanks ken
This is tough, but the way I learned was to watch the vid all the way through a few times, then just watch 3:07 through 3:08 at .25 speed over and over and over and over (probably 50-70x for me, at least!!)....till you can see how he's bringing the momentum to the inside....it's like you're trying to hit yourself on the top of the nose, just using your pinky & ring finger to flip the chuck back toward your face.
I still suck at this, but I got the fundamentals down in an afternoon. After ONLY watching the video a few times and practicing, I never thought I'd get it. Watching those few seconds over-and-over was the key for me.
Again a great tutorial! I really like your way of thing Ken! Good job!!
Joris!
yea im getting it better now, iv wachted this vid bout 100 times andm geing there. I trained combat nunchuku till I discovered your vidz and channel. u have really got me into the freestyle purly because the way you teach has abled me to learn this stuff. before I always tried the tricks but couldn't make sense of what other online instruckers say/show. so BIG THANKS andPLZ KEEP THE VIDZ COMMING. great stuff
oh nice--your aside about a third beat in the figure-8 wrist rolls helped me figure out why I always put it in mine. I've realized now that if I do the second (reverse grip) wrist roll up near shoulder height I can swoop it down and continue F8WRs without that third beat, whereas I naturally do them around waist height and at that height don't feel like there's time to get everything crossed back to the other side of the body. also works if I just hold my arm unnaturally/exhaustingly far in front of me, so the stick doesn't need to clear my body and get to the other side of my waist :) thanks man!
oh. and I had a suggestion for a quick forward/reverse switch up, or just for getting into that upswing (I didn't know reverse 8 rolls were a thing until now, so I'm just suggesting it because as a day-1 n00b I found it worked for me, so it might help others):
if you bring your hand across to your opposite side to do your first normal wrist roll, you can [virtually] simultaneously roll into reverse grip and do a bounce off the under arm, and either go into the pinky-lead 8s / the wrist roll on the same side of the body holding the chuck (being new to this motion except from doing staff, I found it hard to get it right unless you do it nice and slow/controlled), or what I found easier, immediately out of the bounce do the easy half of the reverse wrist roll and continue from that.
And the best way to transition _out_ of it I could think up was to transition in the reverse grip portion by bouncing off the same-arm triceps by turning/pulling back the shoulder a little and turning the hand as though you want the chuck to look like a staff, zig down to the opposite side waist (can be done with a fairly straight chuck, and zag back to the same side waist for a behind the back transition :) I can only do it slowly, but it seems to work ok.
Love the tutorials man. Helps alot!
ken your da man but dam im finding the reverse figure 8 wrist roll difficult, got thr nor figer 8 wr down I just cant seem to get this.
Let it go!
I really don't understand how the chain should pass over the hand. I can do the normal figure 8 wrist roll but I don't get this one at all :/
Any possibility of renaming the videos? Impossible to find the one i need without looking through them all again.
Also loving the vids
I've thought about how to categorize them better - but I have over 1000 videos now! :o
Tbh I prefer it without that extra beat it's sloppy the extra beat serves as a reset while keeping the rotation. It's hard without it
