    My new woodturning lathe uses a two horsepower Servo motor. There's a spinning magnet mounted in the headstock that can detect whether it's slowed down within one millisecond and call for more power from the motor. There is a 300% override capacity for short bursts of speed. An example would be turning a wood bowl and hitting a knot in the wood. The motor can detect the harder knot and calls for more power. It's a pretty slick system.

    When I was a high school boy, I used to build remote control airplanes. In these aircraft, servos are used to move the plane's control surfaces. I was always fascinated that such a small motor could generate such enormous torque. Unless you have a very strong grip, you literally could not stop the little servo's rotation (and you might hurt yourself trying). I've always wondered what the engineering was behind such enormous torque. THANK YOU for explaining it in such intuitive detail!

    We use them to control the heating/cooling/ventilation flaps in the operator cabins for mining equipment. The servo flaps also go through an automated fully open vs fully closed phase during 'system on' to recalibrate the vent flap positions. This all means we can climate control different areas of the same cabin air volume, such as more cooling in the upper area where the glass panels absord heat on sunny days, and more heat during colder periods. Visa Versa for the floor areas etc. You get the idea ;-)

    We use servo motors all the time in CNC machines. Ultra precision grinding machines for grinding cams, lobes, and ball bearing rings

    I encounter servo motors on a daily basis. I’m an industrial maintenance technician for a plastic company. We use servo motors (quite larger than the example) in most of our machines to control movement of materials and movement of machine components.

    I've been using servos like these shown for years in RC aircraft, but they're also used in RC cars and boats.

    For some decades I have had friends with R/C planes, boats, & cars. I however never owned any, although I did fly control-line model airplanes in the 1970s.
    I purchased my first {and to date only} R/C setup in the early 2000s when I built my second KAP {Kite Aerial Photography} rig.
    Back around 2004 I _'hacked'_ one of my servos to allow 360° continuous rotation. It was THEN -- trying to do that fine detailed work at about the age of 43 -- that I realized I WAS EVENTUALLY GOING TO NEED PRESCRIPTION EYEGLASSES...😊

    This is an older style servo. Most new servos now will use a digital control loop. Meaning their controller is a micro computer running a PID closed loop control system.
    Less overshoot.
    A traditional servo like this is a proportional only controller.

    Most commonly I'll use servos in radio controlled models.....rc planes, rc helicopters and rc cars. I am looking at getting into arduino circuitry and the different uses and probably will see what I can build using servos with that.

    I have 100's of these. I use them on my R/C planes for the control surfaces and R/C cars for steering.

    I use them in my rc planes. The servo arms move pushrods which move the control horns that move the control surfaces.

    To answer your question, late 70's in VoTech school (high school). Then as a AT Metrology USN (AIMD 670) calibrating aviation electronics/equipment test equipment using standard synchro decade boxes etc. Currently RC stuff and projects.

    Most of these videos are about things I should know. But watching them often exposes gaps in my knowledge. Like I knew that a servo is a gear motor with some fancy controls, but I didn't know just how they work.

    We use them on our model steam engines to control the regulator and reversing gear. They are also used to control a whistle or cylinder drain-cocks and anything else someones ingenuity can think of. I have one controlling the crane on a crane tank engine.

    We had some servos a little big bigger. But basically the same. And they operated small hydraulic spool-valves that ported hydraulic oil to a large ram that operated the main steam valves for a 5000 hp turbine-generator unit. Was always a little freaky that we could twist this little knob in the control room and it moved large valves to generate MWs of electricity.

    Servos are used mostly in robotic arms, the more servos we use, the more degrees of freedom we can get

    I'll tell you exactly where I've seen this and what I'm fixing right now! It is on the Bowflex Max series of exercise machines. The servo motors are always giving out on these models. More correctly, I think it is the electronic side and not the motor or the gears which are having issues. Not sure how to fix this without replacing the whole unit. Bowflex keeps these motors at $20.00 because of the ongoing issues.
