      I can remember being sooooo puzzled by pretty much all jazz instrumentation when I first started getting exposed to it. It didn't even seem possible to me.

      Lol there's more to it than that. It's making shit up within the language and knowing the history of the music. He's also not just playing whatever he wants, he's taking the one idea and improvising around that within a time feel.

    A lotta these riffs I already play but I phrase them differently to kinda make them my own. I actually got them from the drummers that he got them from too. I love this guys feel. Its really precise but soulful. That's a hard combination to achieve.

    I recently came up with a similar 9 note lick between the ride and snare. It's basically an inverted paradiddle with a RLL added at the end. The first and seventh note (both single rights) are on the ride and the other hits are on the snare (or toms, if you want to orchestrate it differently). Also accent the left snare hit before the second ride to really make it pop. I usually play it as 16th-note-triplets.

      Cool! Yeah it's basically a 6-stroke roll with an added RLL. It's fun to orchestrate around the kit!

    I'm a bit late to the party. Steve's pedal looks like a DW 5000 according to the distinctive red plate on it, however, the cam is not DW as far as I know. Anybody know what pedal model and brand this is? Thanks!

    Love the sound of this kit! The cymbals are beautiful and the drums have so many tones and textures, I love them!
    What I don't like is what he's playing on them. I just hate that kind of jazz. I guess what he's doing is really good, it just doesn't sound that way to me. Thank God he's doing it on a great kit though! 😉
