I can remember being sooooo puzzled by pretty much all jazz instrumentation when I first started getting exposed to it. It didn't even seem possible to me.
Lol there's more to it than that. It's making shit up within the language and knowing the history of the music. He's also not just playing whatever he wants, he's taking the one idea and improvising around that within a time feel.
A lotta these riffs I already play but I phrase them differently to kinda make them my own. I actually got them from the drummers that he got them from too. I love this guys feel. Its really precise but soulful. That's a hard combination to achieve.
I recently came up with a similar 9 note lick between the ride and snare. It's basically an inverted paradiddle with a RLL added at the end. The first and seventh note (both single rights) are on the ride and the other hits are on the snare (or toms, if you want to orchestrate it differently). Also accent the left snare hit before the second ride to really make it pop. I usually play it as 16th-note-triplets. R l l r r L - R l l
Hey thanks for responding ill get it eventually really love all the steve lyman videos hes just so refined that even if i cant play what hes playing just yet i still do learn something even just watching him play makes me play better i feel like
An amazingly useful video, saved to my key lessons! Thanks very much. Noob question please: how did you do that nice fill at 2:33, is that just double stroked 8th notes? Or something else. Thanks!
I tried for so long to understand the FIRST lick and honestlt i an struggling hard with those dotted notes and applying them while keeping my right hand going
I'm a bit late to the party. Steve's pedal looks like a DW 5000 according to the distinctive red plate on it, however, the cam is not DW as far as I know. Anybody know what pedal model and brand this is? Thanks!
Hi, please can give us a translation in French by writing just to the side of the video ? Thanks in advance I like a lot your channel. God bless you.🙏🏽🙏🏽
Love the sound of this kit! The cymbals are beautiful and the drums have so many tones and textures, I love them! What I don't like is what he's playing on them. I just hate that kind of jazz. I guess what he's doing is really good, it just doesn't sound that way to me. Thank God he's doing it on a great kit though! 😉

Wondering why I never heard of this guy. He's sick.
We need a full 1.5 hours of jazz lessons, please drumeo! More Jaaz!
Honestly this is just beyond my comprehension.
dang... jazz drums are hard
I can remember being sooooo puzzled by pretty much all jazz instrumentation when I first started getting exposed to it. It didn't even seem possible to me.
not enough jazz on drumeo!
Not only Steve has an amazing swing and control... THOSE AGOPS SOUNDS AMAZING!
Lucas Vigo - yes the do!!
God the context he plays around the licks he's demonstrating are even crazier than the licks themselves
Jazz Master....great teacher and superb drummer. Thank you for this fantastic lesson. More jazz please!
🙂 Glad you enjoyed it!
This is so good, I'm literally watching it over and over.
Awesome! Enjoy. :)
What a badass. Thanks for this.
the epitome of quality content
This is what I mean.....half the world think Dave Grohl /John Bonham/Ringo Starr is the greatest drummer in the world.....they havent got a clue
Finished the previous 5 jazz licks video and now I'm tackling these. Love these, solid gold.
Man, I'm a metalcore drummer, and I'm fallen on your video, and.....I LOVED IT ! Nice groove !
Get his teacher on here too. Two geniuses.
Whos his teacher if you don't mind me asking
@@xcodychaosx Ari Hoenig. Fantastic drummer, and he's also got some great youtube videos for jazz.

lick 4 5:42
lick 5 7:03
i love this drummer, his style and groove is amazing
God, jazz drumming is so fun! You just make shit up as you go along! Love that!!
Lol there's more to it than that. It's making shit up within the language and knowing the history of the music. He's also not just playing whatever he wants, he's taking the one idea and improvising around that within a time feel.
@@gcharocks -- I was just being facetious...Mad skills it takes...and I'm jealous I can't do that. All good.
Jim O'Callaghan word same
"I'm going to do it slow" [does it fast, makes tiny bit of sense] "Now I'll play it fast" [wtf]
THESE ARE AMAZING! DO MORE!!!
🙂🤘
Amazing how he plays with time
This is insane. Reaaaaaally dope!
That is an AMAZING ride cymbal!it's like a fierce ride in some way
This ride is a dream.
@Austin Martin It's an Istanbul Agop 26" 30th-anniversary ride.
A lotta these riffs I already play but I phrase them differently to kinda make them my own. I actually got them from the drummers that he got them from too. I love this guys feel. Its really precise but soulful. That's a hard combination to achieve.
Very musical, accomplished and advanced jazz drumming! Thanks for sharing.
You could make a whole video on his licks between the iconic jazz licks
More jazz content please! This was amazing thank you steve & drumeo!
This drum kit sounds fabulous
I absolutely loved it!!! Great short but accurate class

Cool! Yeah it's basically a 6-stroke roll with an added RLL. It's fun to orchestrate around the kit!
Steve your playing is always ridiculous! I always learn a lot from you :)
SO GOOD
Sounds so good
Yay! They did another one! You know its advance when its 0.5 speed and you still are trying to figure out what the heck it going on! lol
This is fantastic
This guy is a ninja
WHAT CYMBALS ARE THOSE??????? They sound amazing!!!
Istanbul agop 30th anniversaries and yes very true 🤙🏿
Really something! Gidday from Oz!
Steve, Just beautiful. Wow? Thanks for the great patterns. Donnie P
An informative video! Thanks Drumeo
This is a great lesson
Great playing
good job man!!!!
When you say "slowed" at 0.22 it sounds Auto-tuned! Great stuff, been digging into your channel lately.
A slight error in the notation of the first lick, but sounds awesome regardless.
Very, very good!!! Thank you!!!
How good Is this guy
Cool
Is he using a floor tom as bass drum?
Jazz drummers don‘t use big bass drums like rock drummers
Nice eye! It's a floor tom converted to a bassdrum. :)
@@lucapeisser5292 Yes, earlier he used a 20" bass drum.
@@lucapeisser5292 that is unless their using way bigger bass drums like a 26 or something crazy
Need more jazz on here!
The first one sounds like popcorn popping. Yum.
Awesome!Grandmaster!Where can I find jazz backing tracks for drums?
Great lesson
👍 more jazz, please.
Through my hat in on that.
Buddy Rich uses this sticking for his final cymbal and snare pattern on "Swinging' New Big Band" on West Side Story.
What’s the main ride? Sounds really nice
more jazz on drumeo!!
Epic
Steve you sound incredible…bravo…could you please tell what sticks and cymbals you use here? Thank you toni
Great playing, beautiful kit.
That Craviotto sounded great in the studio.
Most of thats to advanced for me but the RLRRL part seems doable
Take it note by note. Don't try do everything at once. 🙂
Hey thanks for responding ill get it eventually really love all the steve lyman videos hes just so refined that even if i cant play what hes playing just yet i still do learn something even just watching him play makes me play better i feel like
Fantastic! But the first luck is based on quarter note triplets not dotted quarters, isn't it? Keep up with the good work!
An amazingly useful video, saved to my key lessons! Thanks very much. Noob question please: how did you do that nice fill at 2:33, is that just double stroked 8th notes? Or something else. Thanks!

Damn! 👍 Niceness! 🙂
Awesome video and awesome drumming!
Is Nyango Star ever gonna show up on the channel?
What make & models of drums & cymbals are you using?
amazing!
Esos fills están abusadores
Wow. Goals.. :)
after first example - "so that SOUNDS like it's a lot of information"....because it is! lol
I understand about 0 of what he's talking about...but damn that sounds good 👂🏾❤
I love it

Never mind....I see it's a 5000 series. Not sure about that cam though.

That ride is so tasty. Anyone know what it is?
he has so many licks in his playing i cant tell which one he is going to break down lol
I know right. I was thinking the same.
Hey Steve! Is that the same 9 note lick you posted on your RUclips channel about a week ago?
teach me too when you come to my yard.
What I'd like to know is....how many chairs in total did he have thrown at his head by his music teacher to get this good?
Absolutely beautiful playing. What's a double stop?
Both hands together (sometimes also referred to as a flat flam)
@@dom19119 Thanks!
I like to think of myself as a jazz drummer, now I'm going to think twice xd
Nice stuff, sounds a lot like Marcus Gilmore vibes.
I just hate liked this video. I will play that good in heaven.
i am remedial learner but if the time allows me to learn all i want is allowance
What is the ride cymbal?
i think it’s the istanbul 26” 30th anniversary edition
@@nicwells5592 thx
