My husband and I began to singing this song at the beginning of our missionary journey in 1980. We used it as we went around the United States raising support before we left for Central America. It was powerful to us then and just as powerful for us now. Thank you for this incredible song.
I absolutely love this song & have sang it for over 40 years! It brought a whole new meaning, after I lost my beautiful wife of over 40 years! Still grieving!
Grief has a beginning but not an ending. It does, however, evolve over time so that we can do it easier than in the beginning, although not "easy" by any means. It's been 19 years Father's Day for me...Prayers!
Yes Lord. Whatever it takes to draw closer to you Lord, that's what I'm willing to do. I remember this song convicted me so much at age 18-19 and brought on a radical change to my life.
The songs of Lanny Wolfe (even though I didn't know at the time) were among my favorites at Church and to enjoy at home. I've been around long enough to have played them on the 8-track tape player at my grandparents' house when I would visit. Beautiful music that is such a blessing!
My absolute favorite song from my college days, 1975-1979; my reminder song on how to live my daily life. I still find myself humming these precious words each day in 2021.
I was singing in a church in Muncie, IN on Sunday and the piano player was playing this for the offertory. It made me think of Dave. I didn't get to know him long before he passed, maybe 6-8 months. We always wound up at the local Chinese restaurant at lunch and it didn't take long for the two of us to talk about music, family, and Jesus. He was a really sweet man and I was saddened to hear of his passing. I'm glad he was so prolific. The music lives on even after we're gone. Blessings.
I heard this song over 40 years ago when it was sung at my church in Jasper Texas. We were having a Revival and a man by the name of Jerry Wayne Bernard from Houston was at my church. He was the Evangelist as well as an awesome singer. This was one of the many songs he performed that week, then I got numerous releases by Jerry Wayne Bernard, that had been recorded at Rainbow sound Studios in Dallas Texas. Rainbow only handled gospel music, and my minister's wife who has now went home had such a beautiful voice. Donna cut 2 different LPS at Rainbow sound. I will only provide the title of those albums. The first which called one day at a time, that she recorded when they lived in Vidor Texas. The second release was called he was there all the time, and her son Scott assisted her on that LP. I now live in Illinois, in finding good southern gospel music is hard. I can find it on RUclips.
I learned this from a young woman at church, many years ago, sadly she became a lesbian, i saw her years later, she asked me many details about the church, i could tell she missed, what she once had, so sad 😢
Was never a big fan of this song but had to accompany people while they sang it. Takes on a whole different meaning today. Giving up self. Hard for me but I'm learning.
There's a voice calling me From an old rugged tree And it whispers, "draw closer to me" Leave this world far behind There are new heights to climb And a new place in me you will find. CHO: For whatever it takes to draw closer to you, Lord That's what I'll be willing to do. For whatever it takes to be more like you That's what I'll be willing to do. Take my houses and lands Change my dreams and my plans For I'm placing my whole life in your hand. And if you call me today To a land far away Lord I'll go and your will obey. For whatever it takes to draw closer to you, Lord That's what I'll be willing to do For whatever it takes for my will to break That's what I'll be willing to do. Take the dearest thing in me If that's how it must be To draw me closer to you. Let the disappointments come Lonely days without the sun If through sorrows more like you I'll become. Back to Chorus: CODA: I'll trade sunshine for rain Comfort for pain That's what I'll be willing to do For whatever it takes to be more like you That's what I'll be willing to do.

Still as beautiful as the first day it was sung. Yeshua bless you all. This really touches the heart. Thank you for sharing.

We don’t write songs like this anymore. We are too busy trying to achieve our worldly goals and ambitions. We have lost and left our first love...

I sang this so many times as a teenager. I used to see the LW Trio at Mark Hanby's church in Ft. Worth. I'm 61 now and still sing this song😢

What a blessing to listen to the Holy Spirit flowing through these voices! It speaks the words I feel. Thank You for sharing this.
Oh, this should be our prayer again today. God help us.

Thank you for this precious song.
Loved it ....again1 Yes LORD!
Our Choir director sang this in Sunday morning service. It is an everlasting treasure of a song.
There's a voice calling me
From an old rugged tree
And it whispers, "draw closer to me"
Leave this world far behind
There are new heights to climb
And a new place in me you will find.
CHO:
For whatever it takes to draw closer to you, Lord
That's what I'll be willing to do.
For whatever it takes to be more like you
That's what I'll be willing to do.
Take my houses and lands
Change my dreams and my plans
For I'm placing my whole life in your hand.
And if you call me today
To a land far away
Lord I'll go and your will obey.
For whatever it takes to draw closer to you, Lord
That's what I'll be willing to do
For whatever it takes for my will to break
That's what I'll be willing to do.
Take the dearest thing in me
If that's how it must be
To draw me closer to you.
Let the disappointments come
Lonely days without the sun
If through sorrows more like you I'll become.
Back to Chorus:
CODA:
I'll trade sunshine for rain
Comfort for pain
That's what I'll be willing to do
For whatever it takes to be more like you
That's what I'll be willing to do.
Beautiful

Amen. Old message but hasn't changed. We still have to surrender for God's best. When we give Him our all, He gives us His all.
