I used to watch him play at Roker Park in the 1960's. It is hard to imagine the magnitude of the man back in those days and the impact he had on the supporters. But heros come and go he was replaced by George Kinnell. I was down Hendon to photograph a mural of Raitch Carter. Perhaps Sunderland's greatest footballer certainly another icon in his day. It is also next to a sports hall that bears his name and a huge photo of him in his Sunderland shirt. Some young lads came and asked me what I was doing. After explaining to them I asked if they knew who the man was they said they did not have a clue. I have also known Sunderland season ticket holders who did not know who he was. Time moves on old heros are forgotten and replaced by new ones.

Where did you and your sweet shop go Martin? And what happened to the statue fund? I put money into that. Charlie has gone now, of course, RIP.
