  • The Aegean Sea in Greece is a ‘Special Sea’. It is an underwater paradise containing sandy, rocky and open water habitats for a multitude of marine life. It has vast areas of shallow waters, protected by numerous islands and deep waters in excess of 1000 metres.
Like many areas, the Aegean Sea is subject to impacts from human development, particularly overfishing. This short video shows some of the beautiful fish life that can be found, complied over many hours of snorkelling around the islands of Symi, Hydra, Syros, Skiathos and the National Marine Park of Alonissos.
We need to act now and help protect more areas from overfishing so fish life can recover and provide a base to replenish surrounding waters. Small, protected areas can be a great source of value, not only to attract tourism and improve fishing in nearby areas but also to recognise the natural underwater heritage we all inherit and pass on to future generations a healthy marine environment - not a dead sea.
