This video is proof that anyone can be an expert in subjects they have absolutely no idea about.
I am just blown
I was watching this thinking: "this goes against what I've been told ever" on most things he says
An hour of searching channels like iZotope who have reputations for music standards would show that this guy is beyond wrong about acoustics. The room has so much echo and none of his acoustic treatment is placed properly. I can go on and on about everything wrong with the room

Bro the reverb in the video itself is gross 😂
this video itself is a proof that more acoustic foam is needed because it sounds like you are talking inside of a giant trumpet . it's not a clear sound . its not "BAD" but it's not "professional" (source: a non-professional)
cygnusvideo aint that so
Don’t use foam! It doesn’t absorb the bass
Exactly what I was thinking
Half the problem is that he is moving constantly so the level picked up by the mic is constantly changing. But also, treating a room for making videos is a different process to doing it for a studio where you are producing, mixing, mastering, etc.
@Austin Winters so why treat your room if you mix in headphones?

why are people giving this guy such a hard time about moving around, jesus, just let him be...everybodys different, he's expressive and passionate.
It's not about him moving around it's that his advice is wrong on so many levels.
@@jn2400 no, it IS about him moving around, there are numerous comments on here explicitly talking about how much he moves around and how 'active' or 'hyper' he is...so yes, it is about him moving around. If i'd have wanted to talk about his advice or people disagreeing with his advice I would've mentioned it. I didnt.
@@Nosh_Feratu this guy has been chatting music production nonsence for years now, hes using his personality to gain favour with the viewer but the viewer came for here for facts and not to be entertained
@@johnmcafee9663 thats a fair point. I dont really watch his videos enough to disagree, I just thought it seemed unfair people mocking his hyperactivity, again, Im unqualified to comment on how accurate his information is.
It's not so much reverb that will be your problem. Reverb covers early reflections and longer reflections. But it's the earliest of the reflections that will most affect your mixing DECISIONS. Early reflections are so close that they can phase with your studio monitors. Those frequencies (that tend to be lower) can cause comb filtering at the mix position. So you will perceive your audio as having too much bass or not enough. Certain frequencies can be emphasized while others are minimized.
The strategy of acoustic treatment with NEARFIELD monitors is to then minimize those early reflections. Ideally, anywhere in the room where you can place a mirror and see a speaker in the mirror from the mix position, is an area of the room that you will have problems with early reflections.
Mixing on headphones is a bad idea. Why? Headphones sound radically different than speakers. They are also hyper-directional as audio in the left speaker only goes to your left ear, and the same for the right. There is no bleed-over that you'd get from monitors.
fakshen1973 Spot on advice. I do agree and disagree with the headphones. They're very useful as a form of checking your mix thru a different medium. But you are correct, they do not provide the "Cross Talk" that happens when listening without them. However if you know what to expect from using them, you can learn to adjust your mix accordingly. But I wouldn't rule out headsets as being very useful. Just don't use it exclusively.
My experience with headphones is that they offer a little too much separation which means you're hearing an over-detailed experience. The mixes become a little too subtle and that detail can get washed out on a standard near-field. But you mix with what ya' got. I couldn't afford studio monitors in the early 1990's so I used a pair of Sony 7506's. Correction. I used several pair of them. I blew up a few.
I'd never be comfortable sending out a mix that was done on a set of headphones, even if I knew the headphones well.
fakshen1973 Agree on the first part. But second part, most people use headphones to listen to music, so it's an important reference in terms of translation. Of course you don't want to mix on headphones only but it does tell you a lot that the room w/speakers don't.
Aren't there plugins that model the way we would hear sound, if we were using monitors, on headphones? Reverb creates artificial space, couldn't the same concept be applied specifically to model near-field monitors?
redirishmanxlt It's possible for headphones to emulate speakers but not the other way.
Lmao😂😂😂 this guy is amazing man 😂😂😂he's a happy soul.
So bass traps are useless? Sorry too much rambling for me to watch till the end
Richard Lionheart They are useful. Is where you place them and how many. Because you can over use audio treatment. Think of audio foam and a way to "EQ" the room itself. To make the room balanced.
Bass traps are good in corners because you get upwards to 4db addeded to your perceived loudness. Meaning, if your corners are not felt with properly, you mix will sound louder, deeper, and/or heavier than it really is.
why does this guy move so much
I dunno.. i had to start reading comments cause i was getting sea sick..
same here
Too many sugary drinks, or something stronger...
We musicians drink coffee a lot.
Cocaine is a helluva drug
This guy burned a thousand calories talking about acoustic treatment
Damn.... I’ve been doing shit wrong going to the gym wasting money
All I gots to do is make videos and do Zumba like this dude is doing moving around while talking

Weak
@John Kimble I do believe there is something like that going on here. It seems like ocd or something like that. Either way I don't mind this guys energy, he's a different dude but that's not bad :)
Listening to your video on a pair of B&W 801’s series 2. Your room booms around 250 Hz.
Very nice. Glad we had this talk.
I like your style man and you've produced a very good video
The way you move around makes the stereo field of this video so interesting. Keep killin' it bro ^
Love this man
Hey Multiplier, what would you say about your room? From the sound of it it's far from good!
Your gesture is hilarious. Really unique 👍
Made some good lateral points here.
Wouldn't it save tons of CPU to use the natural reverb of your room??? Of course, fitting an Orchestra in my bathroom is a logistics nightmare. Also, if you want to remove the room reverb, record in the backyard! No room, no walls, no roof. Perfect recording environment. I used to record at about 3am until the neighbours complained. Bloody philistines. Don't they know I'm making art!!! (and who really needs all that much bass in their music?)
Worth watching
Was in the process of rolling a joint with my phone on the couch infront of me and you rambled on so much that when I went to switch you off I knocked my joint over and now I'm double annoyed.
No panel attached to boundary (wall/ceiling) will absorb any bass or mid range. A 2” panel, regardless of what it is made of, will only absorb down to 1.7KHz.
The best acoustic absorber is mineral wool or semi rigid fiber glass.
Misconception 0: this guy understands the purpose of acoustic treatment.
please explain how wearing headphones will prevent a mic from picking up unfavorable reverb in an untreated room when recording say, an acoustic guitar or live vocals. headphones have nothing to do with preventing reverb in a recording. even if you monitor your live session thru headphones, that does zero to prevent your microphones from picking up the actual sound waves that bounce chaotically around the actual room, ruining your actual recording.
the purpose of acoustically treating a studio is generally intended to improve recording conditions, not playback conditions. even if you listen to your playback thru headphones (therefore avoiding all reverb), it does no good if you recorded openly in a horrible sounding room. you'll just be hearing a pristine reproduction of a horrible recording.
he's speaking in reference to mixing. He doesn't even mention recording
Using REW software and a measurement mic before and after tells the entire story. Following tried and true placement for acoustic treatment and Bass Traps makes any room tremendously under control. With REW, it will confirm what you're hearing by actually showing the room status before and after treatment. after seeing where your problems are, you can adjust your treatment to reduce what is necessary. I will go even further and say placing acoustic treatment with a mirror line of sight to your monitors, behind your console, overhead and the back wall, the room reflections will be greatly improved. If anyone is looking for soundproofing, there are plenty of videos on RUclips building walls within walls with an air gap. Here we are painting with too large a brush. Can anyone fix their reflection problems with acoustic panels even foam and proper sized floor to ceiling bass traps, yes! Will it soundproof your room, no. They are two different things. Search for yourself.
Hey can you tell me for how much did you get that studio light for?
Alternate title: Jake Gyllenhaal explaining acoustics while on drugs
Where did you buy your acoustic treatment? You should at least give them a shout out or a link in your video description.
Your room sounds WAY too lively
Yeah, but also consider where he placed the mic in relation to where he is speaking. A far mic placement will always capture more of the room sound and make it appear as though the room is livelier than it is. It seems none of the morons here understand this. LOL
"bookbooks" 6:00 perhaps I should use this snippet as a percussive element in one of my next tracks...
Stick the panel behind your tv on the big oblique top wall ( the left one on your video ) instead, and maybe rise the corner bass traps like 1 meter above the floor.
Noob question here.
This man said that if we need to hear our track with no reverb or sound distortion from our room, we should use headphones.
But many say that headphone monitors are almost never flat.
So i have a small room 2,5X3,2 meters and a pair of KRK's 5 inch. What should i do?Treat the room or try and find headphones that are completely flat? And what if the sound on my headphones sounds alot different than my krk's?Which one should i trust?
Krk's 5 inch are terrible reference speakers
Thanks
WHERE CAN GET THE LIGHT ON THE CEILING?
lmao at the monster energy drink sitting on the desk, now I understand 😂
Good stuff 👍👍
Good video. But are you treating your room for playback or recording? Or for both? If you are only mixing, you can listen to reference recordings that you like and get away with less treatment. But if you are recording voices and instruments you definitely need the option of more treatment because that's a little harder to fix. But to your point of just adding a bunch of foam to fix is not a good idea that is very true. To your point that the bass isn't treated, if you over treat the room it will sound too bassy. (I know bassy is not a word) Deflectors on the other hand like you mentioned with your furniture will redirect the reflections to cut down on the ping pong effect. Of course when possible make your walls and ceiling out of square but who's got the time and money for that? Thanks for the informative video.
I've spent a day researching and the most important thing I've learned is that your first reflection is usually the monitor or the back wall.
This dude moves around so much watching this video made it feel like I was watching in surround sound
I had to close my eyes so I didn’t get dizzy
So I was wondering when the guy was going to start putting stuff on the walls, because that room sounds like crap.
This was mesmerizing. I'm trying to fix up my current bedroom studio set up for VO and have been binging RUclips videos on acoustic treatment. Yours has been the only one I actually laughed at while watching. Thanks for giving the logic behind things, for clearing up misconceptions, and for entertaining me in the process.
Another proof that girls like clowns
did you read some comments? he is giving terrible advice, and has no clue about acoustics.
Lol, my kind of mentor 😂
I will say however, your room does need treatment. Sounds very reverby / echoey / bassy, and by the way, I am using headphones.
But I get your point and I agree.
lol i love this
What did you take before you filmed this video??
Haha I love your expressions man! Not only you know what you're on about but also you seem to feel, subbed!
Multiplier I love you so don't read this, but its really clear that your room sounds like shit. I can hear all the eco and flutter coming from those weird sides of the wall. And just having bass traps only. How do you not have any foam there. What am I missing?
I was done at the 3/4 jeans bro 😂😂😂
“Bits and bobs” I love how British you are! - random American
less is more, the main concept I am following in everything { mixing, mastering, acoustic treatment, audiogear}, it is all about the experience
What about those with tinnitus?
am I misunderstanding now but you say that acoustics kills echo but there is no soundproofing altough the sound wont be bouncing from wall to wall which is definitely louder :D
Joona Järvelä Absorbed.
Your first reflection panel is still in wrong position kid
Hahahaha
I love re juice
Biggest misconception would be someone listening to you ,giving advices on acoustic treatment , considering your small untreated place ..
part of me thinks he's going to star doing meme dances while he talks
The smaller the room, the more treatment you need to get a good sounding room.
This man was very accurate on his description of the five miss. Absolutely spot on!
No he was completely wrong about most of it.
You remind me of the little goblin from Harry Potter 😀
I spent all my money on acoustics, they cover my roof floor and walls
that gate
was subbed to this guy years ago, im glad people realise he talks out his ass
man, that GATE makes me feel like I'm choking
How bout treat half the room?
Tweaked to the max
This how you move when you gotta Shit after work and your coworkers keep talking to you
5:42 lamp shade
Dude, fucken stand still!
he is on speed
seems like he had more than just a monster energy drink
Smoke weed first time?
Nice air karate.
Dude unless they have a professional mastering studio people usually make a track and send it off to be mastered by a professional.
He's drank too much of that Monster energy juice
After sitting through just the first 4 long minutes of B-roll, crack alley I feel more lost about sound and acoustic treatment altogether now.
Totally not trying to be mean. I'm just dry and terrible with my humor and often sarcastic online.
You have a lot of energy but it's very unfocused. Did you just wing this whole thing while high?
Happy video making my man. Bless you.
Unfortunately, headphones aren't a good solution since they have really horrible characteristics regarding flatness of the frequency response.
Even pair of 650€ small Genelec speakers are going to be completely flat if compared to most expensive headphones you can buy.
So...
Even somewhat well designed and treated room is much preferred to headphones when mixing.
Get yourself some curtains, your room sounds very lively.
Chill with the drugs
The one big misconception this video Is trying to get you to believe is everyone is trying to get rid of reflections? Wrong !
Everyone is not trying to get rid of all reflections
Im a sound im a sound... 😂
if you want to improve the sound of your monitors in your room refer to bob owsinski look up some of his videos YOU NEED TO TREAT YOUR ROOM reflections are your enemy it can make your bass sound louder or quieter than it actually is in different parts of your room.. build your own acoustic treatment panels and basstraps its way cheaper. his tweeters are not even at ear level and he has a square room with angled ceilings that is a horrible room to mix in just looking at it he doesnt have the foam set in the correct spots
Bob owinski says foam is a waste of money so doesn't really matter if it's not placed correctly, TREAT your room means diffusers and panels made from proper materials.
This guy is moving around in the video exaggerating the variance, mic isn't centre of room anyway
thanks for the reference
editing is a bit edgy
😂😂😂😂🤣🤣😂🤣
Who does this guy think he is hahaha
Fucking master Magician of the movements
I got 2k and 6k peaks in my rooms
0:38 seconds in, I got it:
You are like the Jesse Eisenberg's Lex Luthor of Acoustic Treatment!
K, now to watch the rest of the video, which will reveal your next evil plan to me on how to kill Superman. Also wondering, when and how he will approach... 😏🍿
You can actually get a lot more views/subscriptions if you stop moving about and give short concise advice. You are overdoing the acting lively thing to keep viewers interested . This is genuine advice, not a criticism :)
SLR Vids your statement is actually criticism by definition
You can't hear compression applied correctly in an untreated room, comb filtering, bass control etc. Good luck in that room.
5 Acoustic Treatment Misconceptions, I'm hyped!
*starts video* ... "a coustic treatment, if yo-"
*skips to the end to see if he changes something to get rid of this horrible horrible sound*
"thumbnail thumbnail thumbnai-"
*bye.*
Adderall?
Headphones lie, but whatever works for you.
Need something to take the Sibilance out of your recording. lol
Why am i listening to a guy who's own room has shitty ass acoustics?
good communication begins with not being a distraction to the audience. 20 seconds was about all I could watch. By the way, you are a trendnoid: man bun, torn pants, so "with it'. ANd I agree that the sound, even on these cheap computer speakers, demonstrates how wrong you are about acoustics, except that ear phones would be the best option for removing room noise. Why did you think you should make this video?
you look like peter sagan
Number #5 is the only true thing you've said.
Audeze is pronounced "Odyssey". True story of an ex-audiophile.
Doctor doctor...
6:10 okay...
This guy needs something like echo or repeating sound treatment. 🤷♂️
Its not even just “reverb, echo, reverb.” You need to treat reflections to avoid comb filtering, phase cancellation, and even more. And its not even just about absorbing “reverberation,” placement also comes in play. You should try researching stuff on Lynda or something before you incorrectly educate the people who watch your channel.
Number #1. X Erghhhhh!!!!! wrong! Without acoustics you can't get an accurate representation of what your music sounds like in a room, which is what you want to aim for, since a lot of music especially, pub, club or concert music is listened to in a room.
he said more isn't always better in refference to acoustic treatment which makes sense if you consider that not every room has a massive amount of acoustic treatment
He is right about the Headphones once you record in those you don't have to worry about the room.
