    It's not so much reverb that will be your problem. Reverb covers early reflections and longer reflections. But it's the earliest of the reflections that will most affect your mixing DECISIONS. Early reflections are so close that they can phase with your studio monitors. Those frequencies (that tend to be lower) can cause comb filtering at the mix position. So you will perceive your audio as having too much bass or not enough. Certain frequencies can be emphasized while others are minimized.
    The strategy of acoustic treatment with NEARFIELD monitors is to then minimize those early reflections. Ideally, anywhere in the room where you can place a mirror and see a speaker in the mirror from the mix position, is an area of the room that you will have problems with early reflections.
    Mixing on headphones is a bad idea. Why? Headphones sound radically different than speakers. They are also hyper-directional as audio in the left speaker only goes to your left ear, and the same for the right. There is no bleed-over that you'd get from monitors.

    • @cageofmirrors1161
      @cageofmirrors1161 6 лет назад +5

      fakshen1973 Spot on advice. I do agree and disagree with the headphones. They're very useful as a form of checking your mix thru a different medium. But you are correct, they do not provide the "Cross Talk" that happens when listening without them. However if you know what to expect from using them, you can learn to adjust your mix accordingly. But I wouldn't rule out headsets as being very useful. Just don't use it exclusively.

    • @fakshen1973
      @fakshen1973 6 лет назад +2

      My experience with headphones is that they offer a little too much separation which means you're hearing an over-detailed experience. The mixes become a little too subtle and that detail can get washed out on a standard near-field. But you mix with what ya' got. I couldn't afford studio monitors in the early 1990's so I used a pair of Sony 7506's. Correction. I used several pair of them. I blew up a few.
      I'd never be comfortable sending out a mix that was done on a set of headphones, even if I knew the headphones well.

    • @johnyang799
      @johnyang799 6 лет назад +3

      fakshen1973 Agree on the first part. But second part, most people use headphones to listen to music, so it's an important reference in terms of translation. Of course you don't want to mix on headphones only but it does tell you a lot that the room w/speakers don't.

    • @redirishmanxlt
      @redirishmanxlt 6 лет назад +1

      Aren't there plugins that model the way we would hear sound, if we were using monitors, on headphones? Reverb creates artificial space, couldn't the same concept be applied specifically to model near-field monitors?

    • @cageofmirrors1161
      @cageofmirrors1161 6 лет назад +3

      Richard Lionheart They are useful. Is where you place them and how many. Because you can over use audio treatment. Think of audio foam and a way to "EQ" the room itself. To make the room balanced.
      Bass traps are good in corners because you get upwards to 4db addeded to your perceived loudness. Meaning, if your corners are not felt with properly, you mix will sound louder, deeper, and/or heavier than it really is.

    Wouldn't it save tons of CPU to use the natural reverb of your room??? Of course, fitting an Orchestra in my bathroom is a logistics nightmare. Also, if you want to remove the room reverb, record in the backyard! No room, no walls, no roof. Perfect recording environment. I used to record at about 3am until the neighbours complained. Bloody philistines. Don't they know I'm making art!!! (and who really needs all that much bass in their music?)

    No panel attached to boundary (wall/ceiling) will absorb any bass or mid range. A 2” panel, regardless of what it is made of, will only absorb down to 1.7KHz.
    The best acoustic absorber is mineral wool or semi rigid fiber glass.

  • @joekub7
    @joekub7 5 лет назад +3

    Misconception 0: this guy understands the purpose of acoustic treatment.
    please explain how wearing headphones will prevent a mic from picking up unfavorable reverb in an untreated room when recording say, an acoustic guitar or live vocals. headphones have nothing to do with preventing reverb in a recording. even if you monitor your live session thru headphones, that does zero to prevent your microphones from picking up the actual sound waves that bounce chaotically around the actual room, ruining your actual recording.
    the purpose of acoustically treating a studio is generally intended to improve recording conditions, not playback conditions. even if you listen to your playback thru headphones (therefore avoiding all reverb), it does no good if you recorded openly in a horrible sounding room. you'll just be hearing a pristine reproduction of a horrible recording.

    Using REW software and a measurement mic before and after tells the entire story. Following tried and true placement for acoustic treatment and Bass Traps makes any room tremendously under control. With REW, it will confirm what you're hearing by actually showing the room status before and after treatment. after seeing where your problems are, you can adjust your treatment to reduce what is necessary. I will go even further and say placing acoustic treatment with a mirror line of sight to your monitors, behind your console, overhead and the back wall, the room reflections will be greatly improved. If anyone is looking for soundproofing, there are plenty of videos on RUclips building walls within walls with an air gap. Here we are painting with too large a brush. Can anyone fix their reflection problems with acoustic panels even foam and proper sized floor to ceiling bass traps, yes! Will it soundproof your room, no. They are two different things. Search for yourself.

    This man said that if we need to hear our track with no reverb or sound distortion from our room, we should use headphones.
    But many say that headphone monitors are almost never flat.
    So i have a small room 2,5X3,2 meters and a pair of KRK's 5 inch.What should i do?Treat the room or try and find headphones that are completely flat?And what if the sound on my headphones sounds alot different than my krk's?Which one should i trust?

    Good video. But are you treating your room for playback or recording? Or for both? If you are only mixing, you can listen to reference recordings that you like and get away with less treatment. But if you are recording voices and instruments you definitely need the option of more treatment because that's a little harder to fix. But to your point of just adding a bunch of foam to fix is not a good idea that is very true. To your point that the bass isn't treated, if you over treat the room it will sound too bassy. (I know bassy is not a word) Deflectors on the other hand like you mentioned with your furniture will redirect the reflections to cut down on the ping pong effect. Of course when possible make your walls and ceiling out of square but who's got the time and money for that? Thanks for the informative video.

    Unfortunately, headphones aren't a good solution since they have really horrible characteristics regarding flatness of the frequency response.
    Even pair of 650€ small Genelec speakers are going to be completely flat if compared to most expensive headphones you can buy.
    So...
    Even somewhat well designed and treated room is much preferred to headphones when mixing.

    The one big misconception this video Is trying to get you to believe is everyone is trying to get rid of reflections? Wrong !
    Everyone is not trying to get rid of all reflections

    if you want to improve the sound of your monitors in your room refer to bob owsinski look up some of his videos YOU NEED TO TREAT YOUR ROOM reflections are your enemy it can make your bass sound louder or quieter than it actually is in different parts of your room.. build your own acoustic treatment panels and basstraps its way cheaper. his tweeters are not even at ear level and he has a square room with angled ceilings that is a horrible room to mix in just looking at it he doesnt have the foam set in the correct spots

    • @jasonmullinder
      @jasonmullinder 5 лет назад

      Bob owinski says foam is a waste of money so doesn't really matter if it's not placed correctly, TREAT your room means diffusers and panels made from proper materials.
      This guy is moving around in the video exaggerating the variance, mic isn't centre of room anyway

    You are like the Jesse Eisenberg's Lex Luthor of Acoustic Treatment!
    K, now to watch the rest of the video, which will reveal your next evil plan to me on how to kill Superman. Also wondering, when and how he will approach... 😏🍿

    You can actually get a lot more views/subscriptions if you stop moving about and give short concise advice. You are overdoing the acting lively thing to keep viewers interested . This is genuine advice, not a criticism :)

    You can't hear compression applied correctly in an untreated room, comb filtering, bass control etc. Good luck in that room.

    good communication begins with not being a distraction to the audience. 20 seconds was about all I could watch. By the way, you are a trendnoid: man bun, torn pants, so "with it'. ANd I agree that the sound, even on these cheap computer speakers, demonstrates how wrong you are about acoustics, except that ear phones would be the best option for removing room noise. Why did you think you should make this video?

    This guy needs something like echo or repeating sound treatment. 🤷‍♂️

  • @Caardiboi
    @Caardiboi 5 лет назад +2

    Its not even just “reverb, echo, reverb.” You need to treat reflections to avoid comb filtering, phase cancellation, and even more. And its not even just about absorbing “reverberation,” placement also comes in play. You should try researching stuff on Lynda or something before you incorrectly educate the people who watch your channel.

    Number #1. X Erghhhhh!!!!! wrong! Without acoustics you can't get an accurate representation of what your music sounds like in a room, which is what you want to aim for, since a lot of music especially, pub, club or concert music is listened to in a room.

    • @TheShadowblast123
      @TheShadowblast123 5 лет назад

      he said more isn't always better in refference to acoustic treatment which makes sense if you consider that not every room has a massive amount of acoustic treatment

  • @jfranko4000

    He is right about the Headphones once you record in those you don't have to worry about the room.
