Here's the thing. The breathiness can be controlled. Ariana, like many people, is a big fan of Mariah and Mariah does a lot of very beautiful breathy whistle phrasing. Here, Ariana emulated that. So, this was intentional.
@@drewrobbins65 I think they are deaf loll because every other vocal coach was impressed at Ariana's control with the whistle register, understood what she was doing, etc. Ariana also never said that the whistle notes were harming her voice (she does them all the time) so I don't get what they meant by strained
r u 2 good vocal coaches…?? youd think you would be able to understand them as coaches but you cant..? its so easy to understand what shes saying, and she’s completely relaxed while hitting those
This isn't a bash on Ariana, but she's NOT a vocal coach... She's a personality on a TV SHOW... Not only isn't she a vocal coach, but she even claims to not even had any vocal LESSONS, and that her range and skills came naturally. Let's keep "reality shows" and actual and reality in perspective. ;-)
@Luna C - While I agree that she's super talented and would definitely side with you on experience over "education" in most things (like carpentry, cooking or parenting), I'd have to disagree when it comes to vocal coaching... First, countless singers in the past have been phenomenal without being trained due to sheer talent. I'd sell my soul to sound half as good as some of them... Some had long careers some didn't. Some like Mariah Carey didn't know (or care) about proper technique or vocal health in the early stages and literally ruined themselves because of it. Singing isn't carpentry, and it's not all about producing the best sound possible. There's a lot of physicality involved. I'd trust a doctor to set my broken bone rather than have Johnny Knoxville do it despite his history of breaks and fractures. Sometimes you need the nerds with the skoolin'. 😁 Also, if someone is a natural talent at something, and you are working to achieve their levels, there is one thing that they can't give you... Their talent. :)) Using myself as an example, I spent years playing guitar semi-professionally despite "limited" lessons as a child. A LOT of hard work and a lot of "shortcuts" went into my learning stage. I did ok... Even got to see a couple countries through the experience. However, I didn't even teach my own kids how to play (other than some basic chords to spark their interest)... I was a TERRIBLE teacher.. A lot of things that I did, I "Just did" without knowing the reason why, or how I did them... Most things that came naturally, I was actually unaware of until asked about them. Even then, I couldn't explain or "teach" what I was doing, properly. Other things I did, but did them incorrectly, making me less efficient than I could have been, but hey... It's all about the end result, right? Unlike vocals, that back-door approach had no chance of hurting me physically. That "more than two ways to skin a cat" approach doesn't always apply with your vocal chords. My kids learned correctly, and the youngest was better than I was after 5 or six years with a FAR greater knowledge of the music THEORY and mechanics that went along with the talent simply because someone trained in TEACHING gave her the right skills in the right context to accel far faster then I did. Could that teacher have lasted a week on the road with me, or dealt with the other aspects of performing?... No way in hell, but that wasn't his job . I eventually took classes in music theory and composition... After I had "retired". Better late than never.🙄
@@_Common_Logic_ they were connecting your comment of Ariana claiming to not have taken any vocal lessons to her literal vocal coach/instructor. If you have a vocal coach/instructor, you take vocal lessons to continue developing your craft. Guitar is very different. As a music student myself, I have peers who are already teaching private voice and we are in the same class and etc but I personally don’t feel like I could confidently teach… but at this point we all have the qualities and resources available to do so. As long as Ariana has been singing and performing she definitely has the option of instructing as a coach herself - I definitely wouldn’t discredit her so easily.
This is confusing... "Professionals" who don't understand why other professionals do things... Did Whitney "Need" to step her hand through the air to visualize and complete her runs? Does Dimash "need" to wince and tighten his grip on the mic before hitting a high note that's obviously child's-play for him? Why does a metal guitarist STAND differently than a classical guitarist while playing the same notes on the same instrument? Maybe... Just maybe, Ariana uses facial expression and (OMG) physical movement in her face and jaw to visually emphasize the performance and give the viewer something interesting to look at. This is is a PERFORMANCE... Sitting there stone-faced like a third-chair cello player in a chamber-music orchestra, just because you have the talent to do so is about the silliest thing one could ever do and would be a career killer in Pop music. As for the "whistle"... I think the intentional over-breath was meant to move the (overused) technique from the usual POP genre to more "Jazzy", woodwind sound. I don't know if I liked it, but I definitely understood the choice and appreciated it over what would have sounded like a dolphin singing jazz if she had done it... "Properly".🙄 This is actually the first Ariana Grande song I've ever heard. The genre (pop) isn't my thing and I let my preconceived bias keep me from exploring her work... I have to admit, that I'm a little surprised at her talent... Hate to admit it, but I'm gonna have to check a few more Ariana songs.
YESS TRY IT. For sure Get well soon, West Side, better off, off the table, safety net, obvious these are really good non pop songs and she is sooo good, welcome maybe a future fan:)
@Lizzie N Okay, I finally had time to sit down with decent monitors and check it out... I'd be lying if I said I wasn't impressed. I'd give her a few years before her vocal cords mature, and it's just going to get better from there, but Damn... That girl might actually have "perfect pitch" in the true sense. Saying the band was "TIGHT" is an understatement too... People in that crowd got a hell of a treat that night. Thanks for the suggestion.
@Lizzie N - Great... I'm still trying to wrap my head around Billie Eilish's old-school creativity within her writing, and now I need to keep an ear out as another pop star matures into an accomplished R&B singer... I'm too old for this shi... 🙄😅😅
Her jaw movement is something she really likes doing, just because she can. 🤣 Her low notes are new, she is trying new things out. The breathiness is just what she love doing. The whistling is so breathy because of the words. 😉 And that was a CLEAR perfect E6 you sang 👌🏼.
i really dont think that that was unhealthy. one of my strongest points is my whistle tone and im totally comfortable doing it however i've never done it with so much air like ari did. she sounds exactly like Mariah in her whistle in function of the amount of air she is using. in her performance of Save Your Tears featuring The Weekend, she does it the same way but without the words and it sounds amazing. so i really dont think that was unhealthy in any way. and btw she looks so comfortable doing it. idk im not a professional but whatever.
Exactly! I'm a tenor, my voice is naturally a little higher, and that's why I've always found it easy to hit high notes, especially in Whistle. I'm 22 now, and I've been singing and talking in whistle since I was 11, that's when I found out I could do it, and to this day it has never changed or harmed my voice at all, on the contrary, as time goes by I get more and more control of my whistle.
thank you for pointing this out! she’s using a good amount of air because she’s singing an entire CHORUS in that register. she whistled clearly nightly on the Sweetener World Tour during the “God is A Woman” climax and they were clearer simply because she was whistling a note as opposed to whistling a phrase. I am no professional either but to say “unhealthy” is a stretch to me. Everyone is entitled to their opinions but oof.
The problem with sounding like Mariah, is that the way that Mariah used her voice damaged it to the point where she basically has stopped singing at 40. Arianna herself has said that she tries not to whistle very much because it hurts her voice. You’re not wrong though! However people use their instrument is up to them as artists and if it sounds good and people like it, go for it! We just try to break this stuff down for newer singers. In our opinion that sounded a little rough to her voice. We were startled because it didn’t sound like her normal clear whistle.
“as good as it used to” this is her first time on a track whistling an entire cores 😂 . it’s light and airy to the aesthetic of the track … bc she def did the save ur tears and NAILED the whistle note. whistling while singing words is difficult
I discovered my whistle when I was 11 yeras old, and since then I have never stopped doing it. Now I'm 22 and besides singing melodies I can also speak whole sentences in whistle, quite easily because I'm a tenor and I have a medium/high voice. And using my whistle all these years has never hurt my voice, because it feels natural to me, just as it's natural to Ariana.
Good! Keep it up! The problem with whistle is later in life, like 30. Arianna herself talks about how whistle hurts her voice and she tries not to do it as much as she can.
It’s just so funny 😂 that people don’t understand she’s making it breathy and brightening it so you can understand the words I haven’t heard a single vocal coach critique her on this all of them have been impressed 🤔 and making fun of her annunciation and saying your fans just a lil sus 😬
She did it totally on purpose and it’s the hardest kind of whistle tone to make… it demands such a huge vocal control to be able to let the air go while whistling and pronouncing all the words without letting the voice disappear!! This is gold and she found her healthiest and most comfortable place on whistle notes.
@@popsyturvee5112 they said it sounded unhealthy . Not that it sounded bad . It was inefficient . Destroying her vocal cords . And honestly not ear friendly . The obsession with wishing for ari to be the next Mariah won’t change that .
other "vocal experts" reactions I've seen have said that in order to *phrase* that high up there & for words to be clear and audible enough to hear/understand, you have to incorporate a lot air into your whistle tones. and so I'm guessing that's what she's doing, her whistles sound breathy because she's phrasing but if she were to do a simple adlib in whistle (without trying to form words) it would've been an a lot more cut clear tone. she's AMAZING nonetheless lmao 😍
The breath in her whistle register is very very intentional. It is different from whistle register she's used in the past. This is irrelevant of her vocal health, and simply a stylistic choice. Maybe it's just not your style or preference, and that's perfectly fine. Also...when you attempt to recreate her nearly impossible runs that she executes perfectly...it isn't working for you!
"it doesnt sound healthy" wtf u guys dont know what u r talking about. She added a lot of air just for the aesthetic. Her voice is better than have ever been and its healthy!
I'm no vocal coach so please correct me if I'm wrong but i think the reason it sounds so breathy because it has so many "h" sounds and mostly whistles are done in the "a" "o" vowels. "h" is obviously a breathy consonant so she had to push out more air to enunciate that better WHILST in her whistle register. "so come run your HANDS thrOUGH my HAIR"... please do correct me if I'm wrong
We think you're right!!!! We think that part of the reason it sounded so breathy was because she was trying to sing lyrics instead of sticking to one vowel to do runs. Most people don't try to sing an entire verse in whistle, but that's why Arianna is AMAZING! Thanks for watching!
@@ChaseandMelia thank you so much for replying! i absolutely love your videos and i’m so excited for you guys to review more songs. you guys are some of the best voice teachers on youtube :)
the entire video: "i don't know". It's obvious that you don't know what you are talking about. You (the girl) hitting the low note with your neck pulling back literally makes me question your vocal techniques.
I think her style, the way she connect words in this song, is really a good choice. Did you paid attention to the lyrics? It must have that "breathless feeling", she has a thing with her hair, so it has a meaning.
She sounds airy in the phrasing of her whistle register not because she is stressing her chords or having difficulty phrasing. She is placing the tone the way she is to fit the aesthetic of the song. The jazz vibe is a very refreshing take on the classic pop/jazz standards, and the raspy female voices that often accompany them. The production is absolute gold. Ariana and her band members are simply re-creating the standards by which future generations will reference as anew measure of musical creativity, and vocal agility.
how could you hear that whistle and think it didnt sound great 😂 its just a whistle note, its pretty impressive she can sing a whole phrase in it. its breathy because it pretty hard to hit a whistle register, not everyone can do it. she probably needed that amount of air to even get up there
Actually whistle tone is made with a lot less air than fully phonating. Something sounding good or bad is up to the listener, not really for us to declare. We were referring to how it sounded in regard to the health of her singing.
not yall acting like its not difficult to sing an entire verse on the whistle register....be respectful and stop mocking her. if so i suppose u could do better whistles?
they weren't mocking her?? they were trying to figure out what she was doing?? and they even said how they love ari and how it was hard bc she was trying to say words. they were definitely being respectful idk what you are talking about
@@johnb9590 what some people in the comments are talking about is the faces they made and some of the pauses and intonation choices made while giving their criticism. They show they were almost making fun of Ariana's singing choices. Maybe "making fun of" is not precisely it, but there was something about the reaction that wasn't nice. Stuff like that is not that hard to see you know, there's a lot more than just the actual words that come out from people's mouths.
She moves her jaw as a stylistic choice because she thinks it looks cooler and unique to do but she can literally do runs without mowing the jaw and the rasp in her voice is a stylistic choice too.
She’s never spoken on this I don’t think. But it’s definitely not to look cool it just creates a certain sound that she likes (Ik ppl claim it does nothing for the voice but she’s done runs with and without the jaw and they sound different)
Ariana does things unique to her. She has a lot of mannerisms in the way she move, the way she talk, the way she basically act (like any other person) and that carries out to her singing.
You're actually right! She literally spoke on the whistle register for an entire chorus, that's why you can hear so much air. Also they were E6's at the top, and if you hear at the end when the trumpet solo ends, she does a 'whooo' that's an E6 but in falsetto! And you can hear the clarity and the difference. I'm loving these reactions so much! Keep them going 💜. I think you would also love reacting to little mix as well, in studio they are great, but live.... they are on a whole different level!!!
Usually whistle notes are just notes ( not phrases ), Ariana sang phrases with whistles, which is why it sounded a little different from normal whistles. She’s queen of vocals
Her whistles here is very breathy because she needs the breathiness to phrase the whistles. And as you guys pointed out, the run was clearer, and yes it is, since there were no words on that part.
Y'all can definitely sing, no doubt but I think creatives experiment different sounds with their vocals. Sometimes being less technical and being more free to experiment with the voice produce unique-to-self sounds even if it sounds wrong or not - it's how singing trends evolve.
That air with the whistle is an additive, you can say its unhealthy if you can hear cracks in her voice but it doesn't havee. For me its the vibe, if you sing a full whistle tone its just doesn't feel from the vibe.
When it comes to Mariah, Mariah was working non stop in 90s she even did whole concerts sick and she had nodules. Mariah is a very sad case but is an example that I’m pretty sure Ariana is not following. In fact, Ariana voice is aging like Beyoncé’s. She gets better every era. Mariah voice had a great decline at Ariana age. Also it’s been a whole year of quarantine, her voice should be healthy.
Agreed, Arianna is an amazing vocalist that is keeping her vocal health a very high priority. That's definitely one reason we were so surprised to hear this! In the end we think that she's doing just fine, thats just how it sounds when you try and sing an ENTIRE CHORUS in whistle tone! 😂
I loved watching your initial concern and then going through the possibilities of what it could be or what the reason may be for the breathy whistles. Vocal coaches wouldn’t just criticize, but work it through with the singers. You guys must be really great vocal coaches. I loved this reaction!
Ariana sang the whole chorus in whistle tone. Some people didn't like it and that's ok, but I think it's amazing if you can speak/sing using whistle. :)
And also i think that you guys are not a fan of whistle register, I also watched your reaction to morissette's akin ka na lang and i think that you didn't like her whistling. I'm not mad :) thank you for reacting
She´s singing a whole verse, thats why she sound like that. She´s improving and improving because she´s always learning and maintaing her voice as healthy as posible. Also Mariah did it too in early years of her career and she sounded pretty similar to Ariana.
the air and the way it's sounds like that is because she is actually singing words through the whistles which is different than just having a high note which is what other people do
i love how they are in every way trying to be polite and nice, but i also think it would benefit them to hear the original song before they hear the live version. in this case with the whistle part of the song, it is normally in the background and sounds a little breathy like that, but since they haven’t heard the original song it sounds weird. just food for thought
Her making the whistle sound like that was part of the song / vibe 💀 listen to imagine by her live 😭 it was literally just for this one sound , her whistles are very very healthy
This is my first time watching any of your videos, and what I have to say is not directed at the two of you, in all honestly, but instead, towards the shockingly vast number of people who have commented already, as well as anyone who will potentially feel the need or have the desire to express similar sentiments as those who have thus far, especially if those notions mirror the general and overt attitude and manner that so many people, for whatever reason *[I could speculate, but I won't],* have consciously decided to go for when expressing themselves and their thoughts on the video. First and foremost, there is no doubt, whatsoever, that Ariana is incredibly talented and that there is a valid and substantiated reason why she has become so successful. Now, I say the following as someone who technically is a fan of Ariana’s work, as well as many others, but someone, and besides being someone who just does not view artists, celebrities, etc., as anything or in any particular way other than as human beings like everybody else in the world, which, within itself, causes a level of “discomfort” as far as identifying myself as a “fan,” for it feels unnatural in a sense, who also doesn't enjoy identifying as a fan due to what people have turned that term into with the way they think, act/behave, and their overall mentality and perspective of the person that they are a fan of, which is precisely what one can see occurring in the comment section here, however, and with that said, there is a noticeable level of ignorance, unnecessary attitude, unwarranted statements, blatant disrespect, and irrational reactions coming from a shockingly large amount of people who are, quite obviously, fans of Ariana’s, and this continuous and habitual attitude and mentality from “fans” never stops being unfortunate to see, as well as it never failing at being a negative quality to any discussion about anything to do with music and artists in the music industry. It's like something that sucks the magic and positivity that music, as a whole, brings into this world, due to people taking it into their own hands and spewing their negativity and cognitively and intellectually deficient thinking, attitudes, and overall mentalities into discussions that should never result in all of the arrogant, unnecessary, meaningless, callous, extreme, irrational, and childish *[not child-like, just to be clear]* reactions from people that one can't fucking miss by looking at the comments for even a split second. It's also a prime example of people exhibiting their lack of active listening when it comes to those they are watching and what those people truly are saying, how they truly are saying it, and so on. There was nothing, and I mean, *nothing* that was said in this video that should ever warrant, constitute or rationally cause someone, let alone all of the people that it did, to react the way that so many people have because they didn't say anything “bad,” “mean,” “disrespectful,” or even harshly critical about Ariana, the performance, or her singing, and the one thing that they focused on the most, they took the time, at least as much as they could in this video, to try and cognitive assess why they were taken off guard from the whistle section, why it sounded “off” or “not right” to them, and give some potential conclusions for it, but even then, none of that was said in any legitimate way that should lead a shit ton of people throwing a bitch fit or a tantrum in the comments, while simultaneously making unnecessary, malicious, disrespectful, degrading, and ignorant statements about the two of them, not to mention that these childish and hateful reactions have no validity, value, and are not supported by anything of legitimacy or substance, in the first place, and is just a bunch of ignorant drivel typed out before truly putting forth an thorough. adequate, sufficient, and cognitive thought process. Am I noticeably driving my point across, and can it come across as a bit harsh? Sure, however, at least the things I am saying are legitimate and truly occurring, and not just in this comment section, and not just with these particular Ariana fans, but in comment sections all over social media and from certain fans of all different artists, especially the younger ones, and it's only getting progressively worse, and more concerning as time goes on that so many people see positively no issue with how they insufficiently think, irrationally react, inadequately and incorrectly perceive things, and how they talk to others with complete and utter disrespect, and for no good reason, whatsoever.
I really appreciate how you guys give your own take on how this live performance was done. I have always wanting to get a glimpse of how this amazing artist do what she do. I've learned so much just listening to what you think happens technically. I'm in love with this reaction ❤️❤️❤️
i don't think it was unhealthy. she was just tryna say some consonants (S and H) that needed a lot amount of air to be enunciated in whistle register so she opted for this sound. but when she does run or riff like in save your tears or god is a woman she doesn't sound this breathy. and i don't think ari would've chosen to do this kinda stuff if she wasn't prepared to do that cause she really knows her voice and knows her limits. i hope you will react to off the table live performance cause that's my favorite one.
2:10 growing up in church or theater it's more so of a style thing to go with the vibrato... Whitney Houston did it in I will always love you " and iiiiiiiiiiiiiii" and with the vibrato she was moving her mouth and jaw up and down like a vibration... it's a style thing and something baptist black church choirs do I grew up in one so that's it lol
it's more of a stylistic choice to make it alittle more breathy than you would normally hear. And she didn't stop doing whistle because it was hurting her voice she stopped doing high belts and whistles live because she wanted to preserve her voice. Develop it, because she was struggling with a few problems in the past like mixing and breathe control. Now that she has more control over her voice. she's starting to use more of her whistle register and high belts again. Now I don't know everything but this is what I've Heard about it from her ppl and other vocal coaches that have been following her career.
Y’all are bad listeners, please just cuz y’all say that y’all are Ariana fans, doesn’t mean we won’t say anything. That was a random person, she never said that, and it does sounds healthy also very controlled, and breath it’s different in whistle tones, then normal voice. Also Ariana it’s taking care of her vocal health and she talks about it all the time.
Cue the comments of people telling actual Voice Teachers that they don't know what they're talking about, just because they aren't lying to praise the celebrity y'all worship 😅 Their channel is not a shrine for your the artists & vocalists you worship. She is vocally talented, however she has technical flaws and that's alright.
There are plenty of vocal coaches and teachers and actual vocalists who commented on this video. The majority agree that these 2 don't know what they are talking about. Plus I'd like to add that singing isn't a one size fits all activity. You have to see what works best for your body.
You're mouth doesn't actually have anything to do with how your voice changes pitch. You're mouth only forms vowels, your "voice box" and air control pitch.
@@ChaseandMelia false watch Beyoncé do the crazy in love run 18 years ago vs now she moved her mouth and jaw a lot more in her younger days for agility
I hope you guys can react to her other 4 presentations. I read they were all recorded on the same day & only one take.😲 I love your channel. You guys are divine!✨
Maybe she moves her jaw to shake her voice when she’s doing her lower runs, she’s creating the runs, whether they’re natural or artificial. Still great, still amazing, she’s a musical genius!
I agree, that was a stylistic choice and saying words in the whistle register, I have seen her more clear whistle register even a performance couple of weeks earlier than this with the weeknd and there she wasn't saying words it was a normal clear whistle register.
Love this video and I love that you talk about things that are good as well as potentially problematic. I’ve been a voice teacher for almost 20 years. A big factor is the audio mixing here. She’s doing it very quietly here and it’s been turned WAY up but the dynamic Level she’s using is much lower than everything else. Ariana seems to have excellent use of whistle voice (where the folds aren’t actually vibrating) and flageolet (right below whistle where the folds are vibrating but barely touching if touching at all so I think naturally there may be a bit more air that we hear sometimes. Also depending on the registration you’re using you can narrow the space with an almost twang-like position and produce a lot of that air we hear. It takes a lot of experimentation and practice to master notes in that range with different registrations but the agility makes me think she isn’t struggling. Also there’s some slight distortion and grit in in quite a few places so I’m thinking she may also have been under the weather or just fatigued overall since her tonal quality is usually pretty clear. With whistle voice and flageolet being adjacent registers it can be really hard to blend them so there’s no distinguishable break. I have this kind of range and when you drag whistle voice (no vibrating) down it gets weaker because everything in the laryngeal space is getting looser as the pitch descends. That could be another reason for the air… maybe? Ultimately I don’t think she’s struggling but she’s definitely using a bit more effort than usual. Who knows?! Lol😂
The whistles sound more breathy because she was litilary TALKING in her whilst register, while also making them deeper, while ALSO looking so relaxed. Maybe watch the whistle part more often the more you listen to the better it gets
a lot of air is coming out bc she is phrasing the whistles bc she’s singing words. a lot of the letters in the words require a lot of air like h, r, etc. she never normally sings in words with whistles but it didn’t look straining or struggling to her. her whistle run and the rest sound different probably bc of her phrasing words. ariana cares a lot about her vocal health and she also did 3 songs after that performance on the same day. i believe she is 100% okay and knows her strengths and weaknesses. i was shocked also when i first heard the whistles but i believe she’s okay
It sounds breathy because she is phrasing the words, you can do it both ways when you’re good at whistle tones, but if y’all can’t go into the whistle register y’all wouldn’t understand, I can go into the whistle register since I was 9 and a male, and I understand what she did and it’s not harmful, also all the other vocal coaches reactions, they were shocked and impressed, never said what y’all said. She stylistically using raspiness in this songs.
I agree. I'm almost close to hitting whistle notes (I started working on my singing about a couple of months ago) and I understood Ariana perfectly clear. To even attempt at phrasing in the whistle register, you have to have a fine control over your whistle. This whole reaction was just odd.
Listen to her whistle note when she sings with the Weekend. Her whistle notes are healthy. The difference with this song is that she's phrasing, which is incredibly hard to do.
Wait I’m so confused why people are coming at yall… I am a huge ariana fan, so I’m sorry that people are getting pissed with you guys, but I’ve listened to so many vocal coaches and they’ve also said that her jaw movement isn’t completely necessary and no one goes at them this hard. Also, her whistle was slightly airy, yall were clearly just wondering about her vocal health, which is natural for a vocal coach to question.
Pretty sure they all just heard a bit of possible criticism, lost their collective shit and went on a comment rampage. Very clearly didn’t even bother watching through to the end. It happens any time any reactor (especially professionals trying to find teaching moments) picks anything apart.
@@xapokalypse I'm not a stan and was able to see this reaction was borderline mocking Ariana's choices for no reason. Not necessarily with what they said, mind you, just looking at their faces was enough 🤷🏻
She totally nailed it and it's only an Ariana Grande thing , no other singer except I guess Mariah Carey can hit such high notes without flinching ! And she is doing it effortlessly ! Not like git any folds on forehead or contract eyebrows ! She's legend and best artistic of our generation without any argument !
Thank you for your honest opinions. I love Ariana Grande's voice and in this performance, it might also be because her voice is, I don't know, tired? She filmed 6 songs for this series on a single day, and most likely shot several takes of each. Unless of course this was the first song they filmed, lol. I still liked how it sounded but I also appreciate your perspective - not discrediting her talent but instead expressing concern about her vocal health. Keep doing what you do! :)
In an interview with Zack dang she mentioned that the day they recorded the studio version of that song she was in the shower and noticed her whistles were very healthy and apparent, so I guess she wasn’t having that same kind of vocal quality.
I'm no professional or teacher but her vocals were A1 throughout the whole song. and I read somewhere that no entertainer right now can high tone sing like Ariana.
She did those airy whistle notes because it was a stylist choice. You can clearly see how comfortable she looks while hitting those notes. her notes are completely healthy. If you guys were really vocal teachers you would know that, just shows how much knowledge you guys have. I can also tell you guys don’t know what you are talking about because when you tried to mimic her riff you didn’t sing all of the notes she did, you sang maybe 3 of the 8 or so notes she did, I just thought that was funny. Her riffs are extremely difficult to mimic. When you tried to sing the whistle notes while singing the lyrics, you were off pitch and she was on key singing healthy.
y’all really picked the entire performance apart, and on top of that criticized her facial expressions and jaw movements.. people take a course on vocal techniques and call themselves a vocal coach lmao.
Today I leaned that Ariana has hundreds of rabid fans who can't accept any kind of criticism. Who knew? Being overly defensive and insulting people for their opinions just makes you and her look bad.
I am literally one of the biggest Ariana Grande fans out there and even when I first listened to the whistle verse, I wasn’t concerned, but I think expect it to sound like that. To be honest, we’ve heard her whistles before and they sound AMAZING, but in this part, I didn’t really like it at first. Then again, we don’t know how many times she’s actually performed this guy or if this was even the first take, plus she has been singing the other songs live as well and they could taken a lot of tries as well. It sounded good, just not what I expected them to sound. Ariana has always been really good at consistency and being able to sound like the original song, but we can maybe blame it on vocal fatigue.
That's how we felt! It mostly was just unexpected. In the end of the video we're really not worried about her, she's trying new things as an artist. She's amazing!!!
I'm curious if you guys will ever react to podcast episodes because Ariana Grande's vocal coach, Eric Vietro, has an episode with her about her vocal health journey and how they work together. There's also a part where Ariana sings some of her pop songs as if they were musical theatre-since Ariana is a theatre kid.
I've heard her whistling clearly before. Adding A LOT of air in her whistle just fits the aesthetic of the vibe imo.
It's more bc she's enunciating this time. And it sounds great
But the air softens the whistle tone to sound feathery & soft, a lot of time whistle tone sounds harsh
Her whistles sounded like that because she was phrasing. So incredibly hard to do and she nailed it.

Exactly! Like, what Ari did was a lot harder than your regular whistles with no phrasing, just a melody.
Here's the thing. The breathiness can be controlled. Ariana, like many people, is a big fan of Mariah and Mariah does a lot of very beautiful breathy whistle phrasing. Here, Ariana emulated that. So, this was intentional.
Look at her face during the whistle part😭 she's SO RELAXED, and airy vocals are just her thing.

Right, there’s no way she could have riffed multiple times during a phrased whistle tone if it was unhealthy or strained…

It’s funny to see now ppl “criticize” Ariana. She’s a vocal coach herself now.
Also, if someone is a natural talent at something, and you are working to achieve their levels, there is one thing that they can't give you... Their talent. :))
Using myself as an example, I spent years playing guitar semi-professionally despite "limited" lessons as a child.
Better late than never.🙄
@@_Common_Logic_ lol to your first comment, she has literally stated that Eric Vetro is her vocal coach several times 🤣
@@ej552 - Umm.... "Lol" to your comment as well...
I don't see any relevance between it and what I typed. What the hell are you talking about?😂😂
@@_Common_Logic_ they were connecting your comment of Ariana claiming to not have taken any vocal lessons to her literal vocal coach/instructor.
The only way to make phrased whistles understandable is make it breathy.
What? That was literally her best performance
"Properly".🙄
This is actually the first Ariana Grande song I've ever heard.
@Lizzie N literally her most mind blowing her performance to date
you are a genius.
Her low notes are new, she is trying new things out. The breathiness is just what she love doing. The whistling is so breathy because of the words. 😉 And that was a CLEAR perfect E6 you sang 👌🏼.

HUH? those whistle tones were amazing and sounded healthy
i really dont think that that was unhealthy. one of my strongest points is my whistle tone and im totally comfortable doing it however i've never done it with so much air like ari did. she sounds exactly like Mariah in her whistle in function of the amount of air she is using. in her performance of Save Your Tears featuring The Weekend, she does it the same way but without the words and it sounds amazing. so i really dont think that was unhealthy in any way. and btw she looks so comfortable doing it. idk im not a professional but whatever.
I agree.
She did mention about that here
ruclips.net/video/5V3fIVejMr4/видео.html
@@Lucas-fp8br same here. i am 18 and started whistling at the age of 13. by now i am pretty sure i have full control of my whistle tone.
thank you for pointing this out! she’s using a good amount of air because she’s singing an entire CHORUS in that register. she whistled clearly nightly on the Sweetener World Tour during the “God is A Woman” climax and they were clearer simply because she was whistling a note as opposed to whistling a phrase.

“as good as it used to” this is her first time on a track whistling an entire cores 😂 . it’s light and airy to the aesthetic of the track … bc she def did the save ur tears and NAILED the whistle note. whistling while singing words is difficult
it’s not possible to pronounce words THAT HIGH without sounding breathy! even tho i would prefer less air, the whistles sound really easy for her :)
Exactly lmfao.
Exactlyyyy, you can’t make certain sounds that high 😭
Other vocal coaches said it was amazing and breathy bc Ariana did it that way but regardless she sounded amazing 🙌🏽
15:57 that's not whistle honey

I discovered my whistle when I was 11 yeras old, and since then I have never stopped doing it. Now I'm 22 and besides singing melodies I can also speak whole sentences in whistle, quite easily because I'm a tenor and I have a medium/high voice. And using my whistle all these years has never hurt my voice, because it feels natural to me, just as it's natural to Ariana.
Good! Keep it up! The problem with whistle is later in life, like 30. Arianna herself talks about how whistle hurts her voice and she tries not to do it as much as she can.

Agreed! We came to that conclusion as well.

100%🔥
how could you hear that whistle and think it didnt sound great 😂 its just a whistle note, its pretty impressive she can sing a whole phrase in it. its breathy because it pretty hard to hit a whistle register, not everyone can do it. she probably needed that amount of air to even get up there
Actually whistle tone is made with a lot less air than fully phonating. Something sounding good or bad is up to the listener, not really for us to declare. We were referring to how it sounded in regard to the health of her singing.

I think you would also love reacting to little mix as well, in studio they are great, but live.... they are on a whole different level!!!
oh yall are weird
No literally

the air and the way it's sounds like that is because she is actually singing words through the whistles which is different than just having a high note which is what other people do
in the studio version it sounds way more crisp
i love how they are in every way trying to be polite and nice, but i also think it would benefit them to hear the original song before they hear the live version. in this case with the whistle part of the song, it is normally in the background and sounds a little breathy like that, but since they haven’t heard the original song it sounds weird. just food for thought

The key to singing words in whistles understandably is to make them airy. Thats exactly what she did there.
i don't think it was unhealthy. she was just tryna say some consonants (S and H) that needed a lot amount of air to be enunciated in whistle register so she opted for this sound. but when she does run or riff like in save your tears or god is a woman she doesn't sound this breathy. and i don't think ari would've chosen to do this kinda stuff if she wasn't prepared to do that cause she really knows her voice and knows her limits. i hope you will react to off the table live performance cause that's my favorite one.

Tbh, she can do a clear whistle and she just made it breathy this time to suit the song. This airy whisle fits the song better than the clear one.
it's more of a stylistic choice to make it alittle more breathy than you would normally hear.

Agreed. We were nervous that something had happened to her voice but as we continued to listen we understand what was happening. 😅
a lot of air is coming out bc she is phrasing the whistles bc she’s singing words. a lot of the letters in the words require a lot of air like h, r, etc. she never normally sings in words with whistles but it didn’t look straining or struggling to her. her whistle run and the rest sound different probably bc of her phrasing words. ariana cares a lot about her vocal health and she also did 3 songs after that performance on the same day. i believe she is 100% okay and knows her strengths and weaknesses. i was shocked also when i first heard the whistles but i believe she’s okay
Just lsisten to the "save your tears live" her wistle is perfect. She do it airy because she just want to do it like this.
@@abelcollado1711 yes frr
THAT VOICE...THAT BAND...THAT MUSIC...WOW...SAY NO MORE!!!
Because they're stans not fans. They see every little "criticism" as insulting her as an artist. It's quite sad.
Girl likes to move her mouth/jaw area, let her be ffs 🙄
@@xapokalypse I'm not a stan and was able to see this reaction was borderline mocking Ariana's choices for no reason. Not necessarily with what they said, mind you, just looking at their faces was enough 🤷🏻
She totally nailed it and it's only an Ariana Grande thing , no other singer except I guess Mariah Carey can hit such high notes without flinching ! And she is doing it effortlessly ! Not like git any folds on forehead or contract eyebrows ! She's legend and best artistic of our generation without any argument !
The whistles were super low, they were like mid 5th octave/ early 6th octave and that's why they're super breathy, upper 6th octave she's super good
Thank you for your honest opinions.
WE HERE OMG IM SO EXCITED I LOVE U GUYS
She always had the breathy voice listen to her first album
I swear their reactions are SO funny. When she started singing in whistle note 🤣🤣🤣🤣
I think it’s the audio effects on her voice. I feel like there’s so much reverb and space going on making the whistles sound like that.
No it’s bc you push out air to talk and it sounds great. They’re bias.
The breath is there because shes growing and her vocal is changing
y’all really picked the entire performance apart, and on top of that criticized her facial expressions and jaw movements.. people take a course on vocal techniques and call themselves a vocal coach lmao.
Today I leaned that Ariana has hundreds of rabid fans who can't accept any kind of criticism. Who knew? Being overly defensive and insulting people for their opinions just makes you and her look bad.
That’s just her jaw movement when she does runs if you go back to her earliest performances she’s always done that.
Miss girls voice is so tense she can’t even sing “ you don’t have to be scared “ 💀 .
