Chrissy was called "Angus Young's (from ACDC) psycho little sister" back in the day. Saw them play live in Lithgow NSW in 1980, it was a mining town known for it's agro and fighting at gigs, every time Chrissy moved to the front of the stage, the miners all moved back, they were terrified of her!

Hey loved reading your first 7 words here 👍 I requested Nick to play this (I’m so excited about that still!) But I love your little review there. I often think I’m the only one who loves this song madly. I’m not alone and it feels good 😃
I was introduced to the Divinyls on a Midnight Special mini concert around 1980.They blew me away and I was already blown away. I was infatuated by Chrissy's wild stage performance and she was built like a brick shit house. She could sing with the angels and then growl with the devil all in one lyric. I bought their albums as fast as they released them, they recorded to few. They never recorded a dud song. Guitar player Mark McNee was the perfect accompaniment for Chrissy and was a constant through all their lineup changes. I LOVE THIS BAND and couldn't plug my earbuds in fast enough when I saw you were reacting to them. Thanks Nick.
If that was the show they did with the Plimsouls, this clip is from that show. They got hired for the US festival the next weekend because Steve Wozniak saw them and hired them immediately. They were so good at the US festival they got 3 songs in the US festival movie. The only other band who got 3 songs was Triumph, another new band who absolutely killed it at that show. Even the headliners didn't get 3 songs.
Just to add Chrissy was dark, raw and different in a time where 80s pop was dominating I had the pleasure of seeing her live a couple of times and she and the band were incredible.
I knew Chrissy and Elsie. We all lived in the same appartment block in Darlinghurst back in the 80's. Elise was an elderly lady, she was quiet the character.
"not the vomit sound",,,,,, that sound is scary as hell. Love this band.....She is one of a kind. i have been chasing that - in the zone - type of performance forever.
She's a story teller and told the stories no one else was telling back in the '80's. She's a legend. Thanks so much for noticing how amazing she is. xx
I’ve not heard someone appreciate Christie as much as you, I truly appreciate it, she was phenomenal. Damn cancer and damn multiple sclerosis. But she didn’t on her terms and l just LOVE her so much. Subbed❤️
I remember she had such an edge and a reputation for being wild ,so when we saw her live ,I felt the audience was actually scared lol which only added to her mystery..They where absolutely a phenomenonal band .Her voice was one of a kind.
Elsie was a neglected child Chrissy is acting out Elsie some of the lines are "She just sleeps all day In her squalid little slum And takes little white pills To make her body feel numb And it's dark and dirty And there's nothing left to eat And in her heart there's a feeling of defeat Smells of bus and fornication And a bottle of cheat scent Should she stick around If this is all that life meant" . Peace out
Not true friend. I Knew both Chrissy and Elsie. Elsie lived in an apartment across the hall from Chrissy. I lived in the appartment underneath Chrissy. Elsie was an elderly lady who would get quite intoxicated at night and had the biggest potty mouth I've ever heard and she'd yell out all kind of profanities throughout the night until the sun came up. But in the day time, she was the sweetest little old lady you'd ever met.
At the end of the song. Chrissy is saying "open the door Wally". I never met Wally, but he lived nextdoor and him and Elise were "friends". When Elsie was drunk, she'd call out for him all the time.
I'm not sure about that. Elsie had no family or friends. When Chrissy sings the part about "she has this one way conversation" that's about Elsoe yelling out all night long when she was drunk. I use to see Elsie walking towards Oxford Street where she'd go to a pub and sit all afternoon drinking scooners.
When Elsie found out Chrissy wrote a sing about her, she became quite hostile towards Chrissy and would say things like.. "how dare you write a song about me your fucking cunt". It would go on and on all night long until she passed out. Then the same thing day in day out.
Hi bro I'm a new subscriber, and your the only one who has put my favourite female singer on Divinyls. I've asked other RUclipsrs to react to The late great Crissie. Ampthlet. She died of breast cancer. R. I. P. Crissie. Criss
Chrissy was a phenomenon, she truely was one of the best singers i've ever seen grace a stage.Yes she was fierce and in your face but also passionate she sang with so much emotion and feeling. And she was totally gorgeous both inside and outside.I had the absolute honor of talking to her a couple of times over the years and I treasure her memory. She was taken from the world way to soon, she will live on in everyones memory....RIP Chrissy
I have never heard that song before and I am an Aussie who has seen them live. That song is so dark but Chrissy just nails it. Not what I was expecting
Nick Maguire Depends on when you saw them. It was originally off their first album in 1982 "Monkey Grip". They performed it often back then. The latest performance I've ever seen was around 1988.
@@warrenbridges1891 yeah it might have been just before then, 80/81 maybe at the famous old Sylvania Hotel in Sydney. It was a great gig, turned up there not knowing anything was on and got a bonus!

I went to see the divinyls everytime they were in town and usually went to every show. Chrissie Amplett was from another galaxy...truly a ⭐ when she stepped onto the stage you were transfixed and somehow belonged to her and that moment forever. She was wild untamed and provocative more than any other woman on stage. ❤ RIP 😇🙏
I'm so glad I watched this. I had several albums and used to listen to them when I was a teenager and saw them live in a club when I was 18 but I don't think I've ever heard this one! (I mean surely I would remember this wouldn't I).
Saw Divinyls live maybe 15, 20 times. Every gig, either smoky pub or stadium was electric. Owned all their albums & still listen to them all. Bwaaaaahhaaaa I was waiting for your reaction to Chrissy's out the gate moments 😂 I have to laugh. I love your reactions Bruv. Much love from New Zealand xo
Her performance for this is a lot closer to Ozzie Osborne than Tina Arena. If you think of how a lot of male frontmen were on stage in the 70's and 80's, particularly with the hard rock and early punk & metal bands there was a raw performance nature that went beyond any vocal performing, and not in a manufactured boy band synchronised dancing way. The arms up, shoulders hunched and guttural "huh" sounds reminds me of some people on the fringes of society and how they might try to posture or threaten "normal" people as a fear response, to try and be left alone. Arms like raised hackles to appear bigger and warning grunts to scare school kids or office drones. Thanks for checking out this song. I recommend having the lyrics with you when you next watch or listen to this song. Edit: wanted to add, the band went off! So glad to see them rocking out.
Yes Nick you got my name right! Thank you for playing my song. To the fans of Divinyls I’m trying to find “Old Radios” but can’t find it 🤷♀️ anyone got it?

The lipstick i am guessing strikes me as suicidal and the hand yapping gestures would i guess depict everything going on around Elsie. People talking but ignoring her. That is how i see it.
The 53-year-old Divinyls singer died in New York after a long battle with breast cancer. As the first anniversary of her death approaches, 10 of Australia's leading female artists feature in a new music video for the Cancer Council NSW's I Touch Myself Project. Peace out.
The fact that your interested in Australian music is awesome. There is superior material of the band available. Keep up the great work. New Aussie subscriber.
Try The Divinyl's "Back to the Wall"... When it was broadcast that "The Divinyl's" were coming to town all hell would break loose in the pubs that night. They would ALWAYS have fights at the end of the night I my area, Caringbah Hotel and Miranda hotel...
Elsie was the singer Chrisy Amplet's mentally ill neighbor . In this live preformance she takes on her mannerisms to bring the plight of mentally ill women to the consciousness of people. True preformance art.
So in her book she says she was high during this performance and found the lipstick on the stage and decided to put it into her act. And you are right… she is her actress. Check out the movie Monkey Grip.
The Crown Jewel of the Divinyls discography - this song is so full of isolation and separateness - in many ways it's like a parallel of The Beatles Eleanor Rigby. This is Chrissy at her finest! It wasn't a hit, but this song is a Masterpiece.
The movie is "Monkey Grip" and this is the song about the female lead. This is their best song IMO and there is no speaker loud enough to play out the last half of this song...check out "Good Die Young"...
Chrissy was the real deal brah! No posing or trying to look pretty. She embodied the emotions of her songs. Never been anyone like her before or since!
"Elsie" She never had an education She uses life as her vocation Standing on ledges clinging to the edges The world's a hard place to land on She has this one way conversation Trying to avoid a confrontation Memories of the kind she'd rather leave behind The worlds' a hard place to land on Life can be lonely can be very sad Can be something you wish you never had She never had any affection So she relates well to rejection No stories wait discovery Dreams have passed recovery The worlds a hard place to land on She just sleeps all day In her squalid little slum And takes little white pills To make her body feel numb And it's dark and dirty And there's nothing left to eat And in her heart there's a feeling of defeat Smells of bugs and fornication And a bottle of cheap scent Should she stick around If this is all that life meant Life can be lonely can be very sad Can be something you wish you never had Open the door wally, open the door This is a very dark song but Chrissie's performance is stellar.
This is Chrissie at her early badass best! I think some of her phrasing and “vocal technique” you’re picking up on is her strong Australian accent, which she really owned and used in her performance. Often singers will try to lose their accent when singing, or put on a fake American accent, but not Chrissie Amphlett! You can also really hear it in songs like Pleasure and Pain, or I’m Jealous. By the way, the story about “Elsie” in this song was inspired by a sad elderly neighbor of Chrissie’s when she was living in some run down flat at some stage.
Hi mate you should check out a young lady called Fatai. Song is called Your Grace Still Amazes Me. She has lots more. She is so talented I think you will love it.
Great Reaction, it's easy to be mesmerized by her singing and performance but you missed the whole point of this song. The lyrics Dude, the freaking lyrics! IMHO this song "Elsie" was and is the Divinyls "Masterpiece" not that B.S. song I Touch Myself, sorry girls and boys. You can find the lyrics online but they're completely wrong. I spent some time listening over and over again until they were as close to perfect as I could get them. Brace yourself, her words, story and message might break your heart. Just wanted to help you out and BTW these lyrics are from their album release not this video. In another life I saw them live at Graham Central in Albuquerque, NM while in their prime around 1980. I'll never forget Chrissy or the band, I was 6 feet from the front of the stage, who could forget that? Please take a moment to read the lyrics it'll be worth your time. All the Best., Anthony Elsie By the Divinyls She never had an education She uses life as her vocation Standing on ledges clinging to the edges The world's a hard place to land on She has this one way conversation Trying to avoid a-con-fron-ta-tion Memories of the kind that she'd rather leave behind A worlds' a hard place to land on Life can be lonely, Life can be very sad Life can be something that you wish you never had Life can be lonely, Life can be very sad Life can be something you, you wish you never Woah . . . The fact that your interested in Australian music is awesome. There is superior material of the band available. Keep up the great work. New Aussie subscriber.
This was from the soundtrack of a movie called Monkey Grip. Very dark movie about drugs, poverty etc
She's definitely a performance artist in terms of acting concepts, and such a unique voice - really smooth, but also capable of drama.
Chrissie was amazing live. Sometimes I forget she passed away and it makes me sad again all over ☹️
Such charisma
This is such an incredible tune. It was for a film called Monkey Grip
Try The Divinyl's "Back to the Wall"...
When it was broadcast that "The Divinyl's" were coming to town all hell would break loose in the pubs that night. They would ALWAYS have fights at the end of the night I my area, Caringbah Hotel and Miranda hotel...
Chrissy's marking of her face and arms also carried through to the following song in that concert. I can't remember the song which followed.
Seen them live few time in the early 80s
Try "Jealous", if you haven't already. An older Chrissy. Still amazing. The first line of the song is a gut punch.
So powerful
Chrissy Hind and Divinyls legendary 🔥🔥😎❤️
So unique and like you she had us all in a trance!❤️
Chrissy Amphlett
Wasn't Chrissy Hind with The Pretenders?
There'll never be another Chrissy Amplett. R.I.P
Our "First lady"
sleeping beauty - a classic
The Crown Jewel of the Divinyls discography - this song is so full of isolation and separateness - in many ways it's like a parallel of The Beatles Eleanor Rigby. This is Chrissy at her finest! It wasn't a hit, but this song is a Masterpiece.
I’m so happy to read your comment ❤
The movie is "Monkey Grip" and this is the song about the female lead. This is their best song IMO and there is no speaker loud enough to play out the last half of this song...check out "Good Die Young"...
So sad that we lost such a great talent. Chrissy could rock with the best of them, and she gave the men a run for their money.
This song is #243 on Gods top 666 list of best songs
Rest in peace Chrissy
My fave frontwoman !! Amazing 🌠🦋 A reaction to Divinyls song "Jealous " please 😊
Ozzie pub band from the eighties were so good….the party boys, Aussie crawl, mental as anything, the saints and MUCH more
Should listen to PLEASURE AND PAIN by them. Was and still is very big in Australia
Your description of her voice is perfect!
Chrissy was the real deal brah! No posing or trying to look pretty. She embodied the emotions of her songs. Never been anyone like her before or since!
"Elsie"
She never had an education
She uses life as her vocation
Standing on ledges clinging to the edges
The world's a hard place to land on
She has this one way conversation
Trying to avoid a confrontation
Memories of the kind she'd rather leave behind
The worlds' a hard place to land on
Life can be lonely can be very sad
Can be something you wish you never had
She never had any affection
So she relates well to rejection
No stories wait discovery
Dreams have passed recovery
The worlds a hard place to land on
She just sleeps all day
In her squalid little slum
And takes little white pills
To make her body feel numb
And it's dark and dirty
And there's nothing left to eat
And in her heart there's a feeling of defeat
Smells of bugs and fornication
And a bottle of cheap scent
Should she stick around
If this is all that life meant
Life can be lonely can be very sad
Can be something you wish you never had
Open the door wally, open the door
This is a very dark song but Chrissie's performance is stellar.
Your lyrics are close . . . but no cigar!
Chrissy could sing with the angels and the devil in the same breath. I love her and miss her.
💕
Chrissy Amphlett 🤘
This is Chrissie at her early badass best! I think some of her phrasing and “vocal technique” you’re picking up on is her strong Australian accent, which she really owned and used in her performance. Often singers will try to lose their accent when singing, or put on a fake American accent, but not Chrissie Amphlett! You can also really hear it in songs like Pleasure and Pain, or I’m Jealous.
By the way, the story about “Elsie” in this song was inspired by a sad elderly neighbor of Chrissie’s when she was living in some run down flat at some stage.
Shit, I actually didn't know that Chrissy did Screamo. Love it 🖤
River Tam On the original "Monkey Grip" version she screams "OPEN THE F@#$&% DOOR!!!"
Chrissy could rock it out with the best if them. RIP Chrissy.
when He finds Darryl Braithwaite or Sherbet he will find a voice with range as well- Chrissy is awsome too
Real deal rock chic
RIP CHRISSIE AMPHLETT
Have never heard that before.. it was certainly different. The vomit sound haha..
Hi mate you should check out a young lady called Fatai. Song is called Your Grace Still Amazes Me. She has lots more. She is so talented I think you will love it.
America is a baby compared to what went down in Australia in the day.
All the Best., Anthony
