Memorial: Following the Traces of Hidden Children (with english subtitles)

During the memorial tour 'Following the traces of Hidden Children' organized by Post Bellum we managed to cover the entire route of around 115 km. We started from Vrútky, from where Eli Vago and his sister Ester set off to escape deportation to a concentration camp in 1942. We crossed the foothills of Malá Fatra to Martin, and then reached the former concentration camp in Sereď. It is now a Holocaust museum. And we learned there about the camp's history and about what Eli and his family endured there for two years. The Slovak police sent them there. From there we followed the steps of the concentration camp's inhabitants. In1944, after the Slovak National Uprising was declared, the camp's command was destabilized and the prisoners were able to breach the gates. Eli with sister and father left with all they had for Nitra, where further travel was possible. We covered 34 km across fields, in the sun. Next, we continued to Banská Bystrica, where they remained during the Uprising. Altough the region wasn't occupied, life and history forced them to flee again to the Slovak Ore Mountains at the end of October. Eli, his father, sister, relatives and acquaintances reached the area of Strelníky and walked all the way to the ridge of Ľubietovský Vepor. Then they descended into the Kamenistá Valley. There, the local forest worker, Mr. Vaculčiak, and his family provided them shelter in a small log cabin, a woodcutter's house, where their daughter Valika Vaculčiaková brought them food all winter. And despite the cramped conditions, all twelve of them survived. They stayed in the shelter until the liberation of the region by the Romanian soldiers and the Red Army. In mid - March, they left the shelter, the Kamenistá Valley, and moved eastward to safety. They reached village Sihla and continued to Košice. We walked to the village Sihla through Kamenistá,where we concluded our 6 day journey, "Following the Traces of Hidden Children".
