    What a disappointing lack of horsemanship shown by these supposed "experts/horsemen". Totally illogical approach to training a horse - let's stick a roller on him and, when he is standing quietly, get a guy to run up behind him with a big whip and chase him until he stops bucking. No wonder the horse bucked and charged off, got the fright of his life!! I have worked in lots of racing and SJ yards and own to SJ'ers now so yes, I know what I am talking about. I've also broken in plenty single handedly and can confirm that stupid tactics as shown above are counter productive; a calm, step-by-step approach is much better and builds a foundation out of understanding rather than fear and shock.

    Really isn't a great way to go about it. Should do pressure and release. When you first bring it up let them smell it put it on them and when they stand still take it off. Put it on and off a few times so they learn this thing will come off. When you put it on give them time to smell it on them and as soon as they make a step THEN you send them off running, and when they stop and accept it and turn in to you you praise them for accepting it. And then continue with sending them around a few times maybe tighten a little bit if they're ok with it and then take it off. You don't want them scared of it in any way, you want it as a good experience.

  • @agroomsdiary

    There is training a youngster.. and then there is rushing them round on a constant circle, hate to think of how his joints are or what sort of pressure was put on them there and then chasing him constantly with a whip with no release should not be the way, there has to be some sort of release but not a constant cat and mouse chase.

  • @Luvtallhorses

    Horrible. Yes, there is no need at all to frighten a young horse like this. It should all be done gently and with little rest/relief in between and do not let them buck!!!!! What they practice they get good at. These guys should be driving trucks not working with sensitive, intelligent expensive horses. I can hardly stand to watch. Qualifications to criticize? 12 years breaking to lead, breaking to ride and galloping on the racetrack. More yearlings than I can count broken in. Worked for just 3 years at Santa Anita and cured some very difficult horses of would be career ending bad habits.

    Not sure how this is something any trainer is prepared to post representing their yard. All that is demonstrated here is lack of horsemanship skills and lack of respect for a horse. The bottom line to any horse training is have a mutual respect relationship between you and that horse. Not a relationship of fear.

  • @Luvtallhorses
    @Luvtallhorses 2 года назад +1

    These young horses are anxious to please and usually so easy to educate. You have to reward them not with food but with a release of pressure and a little rub on the head or scratch on the neck. Wait til he licks his lips and shows you he's relaxed before moving on to the next step. I can just hear these guys "I've been doing it this way for years" yeah you have been doing it wrong for years. Sorry but not sorry

  • @AllPurposeRider

    So many things wrong with this.
    1. This is a YEARLING, they should only be learning halter training
    2. Before you start this your horse should know how to lunge, you shouldn’t have to wave a whip like a crazy person.
    3. Your horse should stand still for you, this is very scary don’t chase them.
    4. A SADDLE!!!!! There ONE. NO SADDLE NO RIDER
    You are ruining this horse.

    isn't there a way to teach your horse to do that without chasing them around a ring with a whip? like positive reinforcement training? your horse might like you more.. and be more willing to learn.. also if that horse was to freak out with that thing so far back down his legs he could break one.. and he is to young for a ridder.. I would not be surprised if your horse has trust issues now. you guys are mean... you will get better, happier horse with positive reinforcement. I think anyway..

  • @matshapirimalesforever1821
    @matshapirimalesforever1821 7 лет назад +2

    instead of scaring that horse to run with the whip get rid of it and lead it around with a rope and add a command slowly and use food..? maybe.. and slowly add new equiment.. or train it to touch its nose to the end of something and move it so it will follow it to do what you want..

    Horses shouldn't be broken in until they're four or five, at the very least ridden lightly at three. This isn't an opinion, it is proven by several vets that a horse's leg joints are not fully developed until they are four years old and shouldn't be ridden at an age younger than that. This poor horse is going to have loads of problems now, being broken in at a year old.
    And chasing a horse around is a terrible way to train them. This is giving the horse a bad association with tack and riding and will not be happy being a riding horse after retirement from racing.
    Of course race horse people won't care for the horse's well being. They just want money, they don't care if they break this baby's legs.

      Just a question. Have you ever broken a thoroughbred. I thought not. If you don’t start them at 2 they become too smart for their own good. Then have fun breaking them because you have to break them

    • @mariamhassan5230
      @mariamhassan5230 4 года назад

      you can lunge him but if he's weak you can't put on him a saddle. It's all about horse body and bonds if the horse is strong enough to hold the saddle and you no problem. It's really bad to ride horse that don't want you to ride him. And about the training this is not training this is unhumanity and Unprofessional lunging to build trust between you and your horse but this is destroying your horse personality 🙄

    • @fleurtherabbit
      @fleurtherabbit 2 года назад +2

      @@phoenixequestrian496 I'm guessing you mean that by the time they are 2, they might realize how shit they are being treated and will start fight back, while if they have learned helplessness by then, you don't actually have to treat them right, as they will just accept it. Don't fool yourself, or anyone else, a thoroughbred can be trained to accept a rider at any age, without force or pain, if you are just willing to put in the time.

  • @zarziamirah1936
    @zarziamirah1936 7 лет назад

    That whip wouldn't even hurt! It's just an extension of your arm. The problem here is the age of the horse. it's 1 year old, which means it's growth plates are not fused and this kind of work will do irreversible damage. this horse will break down later in life because of it. but hey, as long as they make a shitload of money it's ok, right?

  • @TheReevessss
    @TheReevessss Год назад

    Never have I seen such aggression in a method. Can see why horse is resisting. All that chasing & whipping can't be typical & leave a horse forever nervous. All unnecessary.

  • @kaitlynbartholmy4895
    @kaitlynbartholmy4895 8 лет назад

    I really just think they are scaring the horse. They aren't accomplishing a whole lot. I don't get why they have a guy chasing him around with a whip. I see nothing wrong with using a whip but they should only be used when needed. For example getting the horse to step of and once they do that stop. Then I would only use it to turn them or keep them at the same speed. The fact that the horse is only a yearling disgusts me he should be out in a pasture with other horses.

    So if you are ever going to back a youngster, watch this video, it you think this is how is done, don't bother trying, get yourself a cat and take up painting by numbers. This is one of the worst I've seen. The worst part is, they believe they are the best training hard and actually posting this to promote their training. Ignorant and poor horsemanship. Sadly people will think this is how all race yards do it, sadly not, started like this in many poor training hard. Want to learn what not to do, then this is the video for you.

      horses are prey animals. if YOU were a PREY animal and you were taken by predatory beings, put in a confined space and CHASED after with a cracking whip, with something around your belly and rump that you've clearly NEVER had any sort of preparation for or exposure to, when it could be a predator trying to eat you... you would be scared. dont you dare say otherwise because you'd be putting yourself out for a fool.
