One needs be careful praising Justin Currie. It's not something he's comfortable with, and I think he can be quick to regard it as pandering and insincere. However, I will profess my regard and respect for this man as long as air fills my lungs. No other artist has had anywhere near the profound impact on my musical direction as this man. While such hero worship may make him uncomfortable, it's nonetheless true. For a time about 25 years ago Justin was gracious enough to engage me in some email exchanges, and I treasure those communications. My every compliment was met with ever-more-obvious modesty. I told him my father and I would debate the merits of our respective favorite lyricists, with his being Leonard Cohen and mine being Mr. Currie. Justin replied, "Jake, your father is both wiser than you and of better taste." How awesome is that???

That’s really interesting to read, & not at all surprising, as Justin certainly comes across as genuine, sincere, & not at all arrogant or egotistical. Despite his success & the fame he’s achieved, he comes across as the kind of guy you could sit with in a pub & have a bloody good chat with. I’d also heard he doesn’t like to be praised too much or doesn’t want people to feel in awe of him. I know someone who’s encountered him a few times & he seems to be intolerant of people being starstruck, which is a nice quality in someone that’s achieved all that he has. They always say “don’t meet your heroes” but I think that spending some time in Justin’s company could only be a pleasure.

I have to say that outside of reading the biography of the band, this is the most thorough and pleasing interview I've ever seen with Justin. I've been a huge fan since Twisted and it's really exciting to hear how they went about coming up with a new record. Thank you for this absolutely brilliant video!

The not where it's at single has some of the best B-sides I have ever heard; Sleep Instead of Teardrops, Before the evening steals the afternoon. Pure brilliance.

This is such a refreshing interview with, who I believe, is one of the best and most underrated song writers around. From the second album, Waking Hours through to Justin's solo album's, his melodies and lyrics have spoken to me in ways that connect on such an emotional level. Can't wait for the new Dels album

A really enjoyable & insightful interview. Despite being a fan of Del Amitri since their first album, Waking Hours (!), and also having followed Justin’s solo career - plus Del Amitri are the band I’ve seen live more than any other band - I really don’t think I’ve heard many interviews before. I have a friend that lived in Glasgow & used to tell me he’d occasionally see Justin in everyday settings & that made me think of him as a regular guy, normal & approachable, and watching this interview has reinforced that view.
Justin relaying the band’s early experiences was really interesting, & answered some questions I had about their change of sound from their actual first album to the Waking Hours album, & his insights into why the albums all sound as they do is fascinating.
In some way Del Amitri seem to be a very underrated band. Justin’s songwriting skills - which are perhaps more obvious in his solo work - are amazing. Sleep Instead of Teardrops is indeed a masterpiece. I also loved Make It Always Be Too Late. But the song I perhaps love the most is Whiskey Remorse, & I’d love to know the inspiration for that & how Justin thought to structure the song; it seems to me to be the only song ever that tells a story with a twist in the ending!
I’m looking forward to the new album very much. I’ve resisted hearing anything from it at all, waiting until I get the album/CD in my hands, though I’m also nervously hoping it’s as good as everything Del Amitri have done before, but I’m sure it is.
Thank you. Once again that was really enjoyable to watch & listen to.

What a lovely evening spent sewing and listening to Mr. Currie! I found del's in 1989 on an obscure radio station in San Diego. Instantly fell in love!! Saw them in Dallas, Tx in the later part of the 90's. Stood right under Mr. Currie, close enough to reach out and touch 'em. ( yeah, i did!) I'm ashamed that the USA has never really "got" these fellas. Justin's voice draws an arrow straight to the heart.
This band/ Justin Currie is grossly under rated here in the states. (shame shame shame)
Can't wait to hear FATAL MISTAKES

Great interview! My friend and I just saw the Del Amitri show in the U.S. (great!) and since my friend and I met in Austin, TX and have a love for the alt country that came out of that area, it was a thrill to hear Justin talk about being inspired by Steve Earle. Now I can see the through line. Also thanks Ronan for introducing me to Sleep Instead of Teardrops. Wow that is a gorgeous song!

It's sort of relieving to hear that even the work of professional musicians is impeded under the current circumstances and it takes months to mix an album. However, I'm delighted they made it and Del Amitri are back with new songs.
