Love to hear a guitar that's beautifully in tune, toned to perfection, with a powerful and unique male voice fronting a superb Beatles song - Colin Hay at his SOLOIST best.
I would agree. I have seen other stuff on here. He is very funny as well. Colin told about a guy at a wedding gig Colin was playing at. The guy said "Nice cover of that song" Colin replying I wrote it. The song was "Down Under. Legendary Australian song.
We saw Colin's "one man show" at a local theater where big name acts perform but not always sell out. The tickets flew out of the box and we missed getting our typical floor seats. The place was packed. Wow what a show! It was just like (along with the other 1800 people) were sitting in our living room watching and listening to a master story teller who would every so often play a song. Mr. Hay connects with an audience like he knows every one of them. I don't recall ever seeing such an intimate and enjoyable show. We very much look forward to seeing him again. This video is so reminiscent of that show. A story followed by a song followed by a story by a song for two hours.
I had the same experience seeing him live a few years ago--it was absolutely a magnificent evening. He's completely in a league of his own; a master craftsman and storyteller. He commands the space with such a powerful, peaceful energy. So glad I was able to experience his work in person.
Went out to dinner and decided to go to the Canyon Club near LA a few years ago. The bouncer told us Colin Hay was playin that night. We were like "who". He said "The guy from Men at Work". We decided to go in anyway.. haha.. Colin fricken blew us away. He is one of the greats with lyrics to match. If you are ever near one of his gigs pay top dollar up front.
Yeah. Business as Usual was one of my first cassettes back in the 80s, but I wasn't dying to hear more from the guy until a few years ago when I listened to some of his newer stuff on Amazon and was blown away. Ended up buying a dozen or more downloads. This is one musician who has become better with age.
Sully - yep - saw him in tiny venue - The Mint. I was dragged by a friend. We got invited backstage after and shared cake with him. He was super generous. People were pogoing to Land Down Under.
Saw him last night at the beautiful Majestic theater in Dallas (celebrating its 100th year). I don't know how many concerts we've been to (way too many to count) and this was easily top 3, maybe the best. His musicianship and true wisdom in crafting lyrics - not just "story telling" - continue to mature and improve every year. Colin Hay is truly a Scottish / Australian / AMERICAN treasure. And even though we had to wait for over 2 years after purchasing the tickets until the concert finally happened, I can say it was well worth the wait and that we thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it and will take advantage of every opportunity to see him again in the future!
I was PRIVELEDGED to see Colin Hay as he performed at our Saugus High School fundraiser. He sang with many greats alongside him. The evening was a bittersweet fantastic night of music to help us forget a horrid time for us last November. THANK YOU TO ALL THE GREAT, GREAT MUSIC CELEBRITIES ON STAGE THAT NIGHT at the Canyon in Santa Clarita. Your performances took us away for those few hours!
@@theselector4733 google for the song chords then drop d tuning. He's playing mostly in majors but if you try to play a full G chord, the low E is biatch to reach.
Actually, I think this is in open D tuning, not drop D. If it was, he wouldn’t be playing the the open top strings, to play the D. I might be wrong of course. 😁 Have a good one.
This guy comes from my hometown in Ayrshire, his Dad had a music shop in the town and often came to our house to tune our piano when I was a kid. I can't believe Colin still has his Ayrshire accent after leaving here over 40 years ago.
I thought I knew him(you know after seeing so many times on telly) anyway one day way back in the early 90's he was walking down Chapel St Near Toorak, I said hey stranger and Colin said, do i know you? I said, " as if you don't! Your my brothers mate, who's ya brother, I said , Tom and besides ive made you heaps of coffees at my Mothers place..,anyway after talking for 15mns the penny dropped and I apologised profusely and also said...your Colin from Men at Work and I thought I knew you, so sorry...he walked off laughing
One of the most beautiful songs and Colin you did it beautiful justice. Tears are rolling down my cheeks as I type this. Your voice is a major part of the soundtrack of my life. Thank you for all that you have given and inspired.
Beautiful Colin … I open my ears to all kinds of music but this is the tune that I will compare everything to and ‘ in my life’ nothing comes near … love your version 👍
OMG.. This is the first time I knew Colin was Scottish... As a scotsman that is embarrassing.. Have to say his distinctive voice is perfect for this song.. Love it
Nice to see Colin BACK IN THE BUSINESS! .... I was NUTS for Men At Work when I was about 20 because they were a truly and TOTALLY AMAZING BAND! .... thanks to the Genius that is HIM.
If you can catch Colin on a podcast or interview, you'll find him incredibly personable, fascinating, and funny, and then when he picks up a guitar, especially these days, his musical storytelling is mind boggling.
The more I listen the more I like this version. On the strength of it I’ve gotten tickets to see Mr. Hay in Tarrytown, NY next April. Saw him perform with Ringo’s band in NYC this year. They were all great and definitely worth the price of admission. Can tell Colin is a great ol’ Scotsman and Aussie storyteller.
Saw Colin at a small theatre in Jersey (600 seats) knew his work with Men at Work but never heard his solo stuff. What a lovely interesting evening we had. Colin told stories and played music.A fan am I after that night. If you get the opportunity to see him go for it You’ll be satisfied I’m sure.
How brave of him to tackle this song. It's almost an anthem, a call to prayer. I love that he had his accent even when singing! Look at Colin as a guest on Craig Ferguson's late night talk show - they bring out the best in each other!
I saw Colin a few years ago at the Fly By Night Club in Fremantle, Western Australia. Great concert. Along with his musical talent, he had the whole place in stiches with his story telling.
One of my favorite songs to play on acoustic and Colin's version is beautiful! Love the sound of that Maton guitar. I got to see him with Bare Naked Ladies and The Violent Femmes last summer in Alpharetta, GA.
I first heard this song at 18 years old on a mono cassette tape that I purchased in La Paz Mexico. It was night time and I was homeless: no money for a hotel, no friends, just there overnight to catch a bus south in the morning. It was an impressionable moment, I slept on the top of a hill just inside a fence after feeling too exposed trying to sleep on a park bench. Woke up feeling very happy to be alive, and after going the wrong way for quite some time I finally found my bus.
Love the conversational tone of the verses. It makes the singing of the chorus really jump out. He makes every song sound so simple, that I bet he’s responsible for a lot of guitar sales around the world.
This was the first Beatles song I ever know for sure... My Dad and my uncle used to play this song in a duet with them, two guitars and some microphones, in between covers of Bill Monroe and Hank Williams Sr. Kind of a weird intermission. I now know that's a bit weird, but they LOVED to play this song. So that was my first real memories of the Beatles. I was so young I didn't know who the Beatles were at the time, but I'll always love this song more than other Beatles songs. My dad was around 18 when the Beatles broke, but he had a whole library of vinyl that I later discovered.
well i cried like a baby. 53 years old and love that song since first day. thank you colin.
Isn't it good ❤🇳🇿👈

Sounded like an alternative tuning to me.
One of the best cover versions of one of the best songs. 👌🏻
Absolutely 💯 ❤
Clicking “Like” on a musician’s work such as this is like as if he were a busker and I threw in a penny! He’s just wonderful.
The more of his solo stuff I see the more I realize how talented he really is !!! Brilliant !

This is probably my favorite version of this song. Much admiration, Mr. Colin Hay 💜
Playing in a band with Ringo would be a dream come true for any Beatle fan.
Agreed, Joe Walsh ( the Eagles ) married Ringos wifes sister, brother in law❤

That Dropped D tuning gives the song a Drone Sound resembling Bagpipes ... Very Haunting.
Would u know the chords by any chance? Cheers

Brilliant cover, Colin has definitely put his own stamp on this already fine tune, awesome 👍

He's a natural storyteller - and what a great V of Norwegian Wood. Good clip - thanks.
Excellent cover. No surprise at that - Colin Hay is, in my opinion, one of the all time great musicians and greatly underappreciated.
Wow. I am ashamed of my own guitar play, yet today you made me overcome that feeling. Thank you, this is truly inspiring.
Beautiful Colin … I open my ears to all kinds of music but this is the tune that I will compare everything to and ‘ in my life’ nothing comes near … love your version 👍
Colin...thank you for some many years of beautiful music!
Wow...just wow!

He emigrated to Australia at 14 years of age.
The guitar is spectacular. I love everything about this version Colin. You too.
Anytime I've seen or heard Colin performing or heard him in interview, I'm in awe of the guy's talent.
I could listen to an album collection of Colin’s stories,Brilliant Geezer.
Every time I see this guy im more and more impressed. There's so many layers and dimensions to this guy and his music.
Colin does a GREAT Ringo impression. "Hey, what's goin' on in heer?"

Love this ! Thanks !
Very well done. A top 10 Beatles song. SUPERB version.
Great song and a great performance from Colin ! Peace !
His guitar playing sounds dark and powerful. Very rich.
Colin often plays in D tunings. This might be an open D, and it - as we all can hear - sound just amazing.
His guitar sound is epic.
Plain ol drop d tuning. Great sounding guitar and perfectly tuned.
This is DADGAD tuning, very beautiful.
Love your interpretation of "Norwegian Wood" - you really told a story (and perso I had a friend who had to sleep in my bath!!!)

The very best of the Beatles and Hay. Thank you-Tube for this, deg
That CRASH in the last bar of a few of the progressions was very effective, resolved the verse very well. You're a good man, Colin!
Brilliant, come to Calgary sometime.
Leave calgary... run for your life from that communist country
The unmistakable Colin
Saw Colin Hay perform with Ringo in NYC a couple months ago. His lead guitar work, vocals harmonies and presence were awesome to watch and hear.

Gotta love Colin Hay,,, I've seen him live a few times over the years and he always tells a story, anecdote or joke before every song.
I honestly think this is the greatest song ever written. I don't care who's playing it or how.
It's The Beatles. Picking the greatest song from them is like looking into the face of the sun and picking out the brightest spot.....can't be done.
My favorite Beatles song.
Beautiful Colin. You're great!

What a wonderful smile this man has. I have loved his singing for a long time but that smile. :swoon:
Thanks Colin - love you man!
Great story and a great laid back version of a true classic...
John Lennon is a very hard act to follow. His voice was simply unique and characteristically impossible to replicate.
What a pleasure to hear this song performed somehow so appropriately
Props to the sound engineer! Of course, Colin is always brilliant! 2020 anyone? Happy New Year! 😉 💜 🍀 🎶
Never been more envious of a wonky eye. Bless Colin
excellent cover..and nice words about Ringo!
This is the best Beatles cover ever! 😍
Colin James Hay, the man from land down under has one of the greatest voice of all time in the rock and roll scene
And yet he's actually from Ayrshire, Scotland. He just moved to Australia.
Just a fantastic musician and songwriter. Seems like a very nice bloke, too.
