- How to build a hilly billy hot tub for under £50. The IBC container cost me £40, gas cylinder and pallets were free scrap, the only other thing I bought was a can of black spray paint and a couple of plumbing connectors. The copper pipe I had laying in the garage. All done in a massive rush for a garden party as one of my friends said it couldn't be done. Proved them wrong. :)
The song is my brothers band The Mojo Filters - / the-mojo-filters-rock-... - Хобби
We are brothers cut from the same cloth. Well done sir.
That was really clever!!! I have those same chemical totes at work, like all around!! Gonna totally try this!! Thanks for saving us thousands of bucks!!! Genius!!!
the project turned out very nice, better than I expected it to look. Great build.
Great build, nice to see you putting my favourite free resource to good use. I recently went to a sales evening for these tubs (they're just starting to become popular in our corner of France), helluva price!!
Happy tubbing, cheers, Andy aka Organikmechanic.
This is a brilliant idea. Im a plumber by trade a d regularly come across copper cylinders. Might be able to rig something from that to transfer the heat quickly.
Upvote for the tunes
very cool ! great idea ! thanks for posting
Fecking brilliant mate. Our hillbilly hot tub is a 100 gallon Rubbermaid stock tub heated with a portable propane water heater. Takes about 20 minutes to fill half way with 110 degree water. Not sure how many fills we will get out of a 20 gallon tank of propane, but it only costs $10 to fill right now.
I am hoping to figure out a way someday to use coiled copper pipe inside a rocket stove to heat the water. Out here in the redwoods we have tons of free fuel. Just not sure I have the patience to wait for it to heat up.
Your getup is very nice looking, so nice it might not qualify as "hillbilly" now. LOL!
great idea video and song :-) many tanx!..
Wow just wow, what a top idea!
Great stuff. I'm hang'n to make one now!
this is brilliant. well done
rgb led rope lighting between the tank and pallet wood would look ace, i picked up a 10mtr roll with remote and has 30 colours for £20
I like the idea of cutting a small steel container in half and lighting a fire underneath it.
Im going to build one for my dog, I will put anchoring straps on side. She is only two, but has mild hip dysplasia and now she can swim in the winter. This will keep her going while I save for surgery which is as much as a conventional hot tub. Thanks so much for all you do.
.o
+lisa j Beautiful. How's she doing now?
how did it went?😂
***** great found a vet that does prp therapy and chiropractic and built a similar tub and so far so good. I love the generosity of the RUclips folks who share their brilliant ideas.
Who's getting their dick out then?
This is a good idea and am seriously thinking abar doing it good stuff
Good job fella!
Looks really nice, great now another project to put on my gigantic list LOL
Thanks for the idea, could not stop thinking about it, just got mine from work, I going to use firewood to heat it and then use a propane tankless heater with a pump hook up I can set the temp I want. I will get a Spa Circulation Pump for bubbles.
hey there, I have watched this video a couple of times. love it. am thinkin if you come across some spare insulation you could jam it between the plastic and wood and insulate it proper like... keep up the good work mate.....
I was thinking the same pink board or even spray foam it. Then build a wood top that has pink board in it pretty up the top situation but still be insulated. Maybe he the coils routed lower so it doesn't take so long to have it cycle it self. Also a shut off so you don't continue to heat the system hotter than you want. Also if you wanted to go over the top you could put a gravity fed carbon filter to help keep your water longer. To take it even further could do a 2 jet pump to keep the water cycled and have a little hot tub jet affect.
Fantastic dude!!!
Bien joué.....I'm gone make one for my hilly billy farm in the deep country ;)
this is so sick i wanna build one
Great music!
Damn Good Smart !!!!!!!!!! Not a Builder , but you give me Plans !!!!!!!!!!
Well we are still building our self, Hot tub would be nice. Cost to build??
Just finished mine got bubbles now really powerful goes over top on full speed and can be done for around £29 with a £17 suction hose which comes with connections from b and q and a £12 lazy spa spare blower off eBay, dimmer switch and a tiny bit of playin. And ya don’t have to take it to bits if you already built it.
managed to join and fit 2x3m 22mm copper pipe in a tight coil round a Ron seal fence paint tin cast with cement and it firsts perfect in the top of those gas bottles,
I cut the bottle in half ya can empty and service it easier
heating around 3c per hour in an ibc 3/4 full with just wood not fan assisted but may do that to increase it speed in winter.
Loses 1-2 degrees in 24 hours used 100 mm base kingsman and 50 mm sides and flask lid.
I use a lazy spa pump on the circuit too the filter helps and pumps keeps the water a safe low temp coming out the pipe.
I love it!
Great job thinking of doing the same but making a bath tub with an old plexi 180 gallon fish tank
Hi chris See after you first time you filled it up using the hose pipe as a pump to push water through the coil, was it able to do it by itself once full by Thermosiphoning? Is there any other changes or things you would do differently with another one?
Im wanting to make a slightly bigger one more rectagular or circular shape with like seats in it to chill in like a hot tube. im also trying to think of a more heat effiecent way, maybe instead of coiling it have a bigger barrel on its side with the piping like a car radiator setup curved slightly across the top inside of the barrel but then again im wondering if all the right angles would cause more water resistance and stop it Thermosiphoning. Any ideas or tips would be great cheers.
Very Nice. Thanks for the video.
+rick rodgers Thanks Rick, glad you liked it
Nice video. How is that IBC holding up with hot water? I know the cage keeps it from distorting, but has it gotten brittle over a few years? I was going to use a stock tank, but a used IBC is quite a bit less expensive.
Build a wood fired pizza oven use it to heat the tub. A 12 volt bilge pump can handle hot water to 50 degrees and get the tub hot in about a hour or two.
Finally the perfect tutorial for this Project! Thanks Dude!
Amazing.
I built one using an un cut hot tub shell. Yes it should circulate but your fire is small. It takes me 4 hours or more with large fire with natural convection. added small pool pump and that speeds up heating time and adds filtration.
not sure about putting open flame furnace two inches from the wood side but at least you have all that water. worst case scenario, you accidentally heat the tank from the OUTSIDE
excelente! Muy Inteligente!!!
on the second use, when the tub is cold, how long does it take to get hot? i have the same design and i added a 20w pump but still wont get hot after hours of burning
When you get the IBC, check what was it previously held. Some are used for nasty chemicals and you'll be hard pressed to clean it out well enough to sit in the water you fill it with.
Good point Bunny, luckily this one held ionised water!
Love it.
Chris, Great Video well done. I'm in the process of building one, Does the burner seen in the video heat the water from cold if the IBC is full to start with? if so how long does it take to get up to temp? Regards Gez Lancashire
+gezvic Cheers Gez! To be honest it would have been more efficient if the copper pipe was a larger diameter to heat a bigger volume of water quicker. From cold, it took about 5 hours to heat up, way too long in my opinion. If I made another one I would insulate the IBC container and use larger pipe. Good luck with your build!
+Chris Jamieson, I've just attached pallets in their complete form to the sides as they fit perfectly, and i'm going to slot in kingspan insulation and foam gun the gaps. I was thinking of still using 15mm copper like you but maybe double the number of coils and possibly incorporate a pump. I'm taking photos so i'll make a slide show and link onto yours.
+gezvic Awesome! Looking forward to seeing the finished product!
i dig it
I think it would be nice with led lights and a bubbel system ☺
One bit of advice for anyone else considering it.... venting a gas bottle by igniting it is just begging for pain... infinitely safer to fill the bottle with water then cut the panel out...
Nice cheap DIY build! Next time fill the cylinder with water to displace any gas that's left at atmospheric pressure, admittedly it's more fun to just light it... A taller and slightly larger diameter flue would create more draw increasing the heat output.
really cool project!!!! But the water doesnt float automaticly everytime in the 'oven' so how do you get it hot back again?
If you google 'convection', this could explain how it works
Great job man !!
Is it possible to use some kind of gas to heat the water instead of using wood?
+Diego del Rincón I wouldn't like to say, I'm no has engineer! Fire and gas sounds dangerous, I wouldn't want to blow you up! haha
How do you reheat the water you put in there? Do you have to use new water?
If you got a pump and made a closed circut (plugged the drain from the tub into the pump) you could simply pump the water in circles to heat it.
Hey....
Nice work
does the water circulate it self, when heated...???
It looks like, to me, that it only circulates when it's filled, and heated when it's filled. I suspect that if the fire is going it might have some circulation (heat water rising?), but unless it were pushed might not go anywhere.
Hi Chris, how did you fit the copper coil into the cylinder neatly? I can see the notch you took out at the front above the door but what does the back look like for the outlet?
Hey Jonathan, from memory the hole on the back was done with a drill bit and slightly bigger than the diameter of the pipe :) Felt like a crystal maze challenge get it all to slot together!
Brilliant design! One thing- how do you stop the hot water outlet pipe melting the plastic tub?
It doesn't get hot enough :)
Yes the water will circulate its self as the water like air becomes lighter when heated. You will need to have the inlet (Flow) higher than the outlet (Return)
This is simple gravity heating, the same principle our grand parents had to heat their water for bathing. A few upgrades worth considering, Inside old hot water cylinders are 22mm or 28mm coils which may fit inside the cylinder as shown, you will get a much faster reheat using these and Insulating the whole tank will save you lots of time and fuel as well. Nice idea, obviously there are a few safety concerns as there are is no simple on off switch.
Isnt it like: inlet down outlet above to keep the water flowing>?
Because the water will rise in the fireplace
Metaldetecting Europe The top tapping on the heater should connect to the top tapping of the tank, ideally this will be higher to help the flow, there's plenty of information on gravity heating systems, I may have not been so clear with my description above cheers
What water pump did you use to make the water flow through the heater. Or did it just naturally flow through it.
Hey! No water pump needed, the hot tub heated itself evenly through convection. :)
Thanks for that. Do you know what the actual song is called? My dad loves it.

Nice!
wouldnt the plastic leech chemicals due to the heat?
does it self circulate?
What fittings did you use for the copper pipe bulk head attachments? Thanks.
Just your average boiler pipe fittings which I found on an old boiler :)
Can you dampen the exhaust a little bit? it might back heat up into your excellently done chamber!
Thats an excellent idea Arthur, I wish I'd thought of that sooner :)
Would love to know the song name in the video and where to buy it. Your brother is very talented! Thanks
ruclips.net/video/ePgUJPOclLM/видео.html
Enjoy! :D
very nice. How is the plastic liner holding out? Didn't think it was made to tolerate hot water
The container is fine. It is a 5mm thick plastic which is used to transport chemicals, it seems to be holding up a treat.
Ive just buikt thus bud. Superb video.
How long does it take you to heat yours?
It does take quite a while, wider copper pipe and more insulation would be a good improvement.
I'm go ma try move the copper further down closer to the flame. Was thinking of adding a power head from an aquarium or an external aquarium filter bit not sure if it would mover the water to quick as we need it to heat in the pipe
Have you had any issues with the water turning to steam in the coil and spluttering rather than just an even flow?
Once both the inlet and outlet are covered by water this isn't an issue no. If I were to make this again I would use larger diameter copper pipe to allow for better water flow. Good luck! :)
I love the idea
But what about the phthalates that plastic releases?
+Maíra M Penteado
I would go back to collage and spend a semester finding out about those phthalates you speak of.
+Chris Jamieson hahaha probably better than getting worried about all that we learn there
; )
On the Avasva you can count on professional help with problems and technical support.
There are heating probes that can be dropped into the bath.
Hey I’m getting nothing but steam despite having a huge fire going did you have this problem ?
Strange, I managed to get a really good flow of boiling water. Maybe if your water isn't flowing very well and the fire is too hot the water is evaporating?
Cool!
Whats the name of the band playing Pretty jammin song
Thanks! Its my brothers band called the Mojo Filters, they're awesome! :D
Chris Jamieson .. I dig your work I'm definitely planning on doing something like this in my backyard I have a nice custom fire pit made of brick granite and stamp concrete around it that my father and I did this is quite awesome I think you've inspired me thanks pretty cool video and by the way that band is badass I like your Brothers Band they sound like Clutch!
Sounds awesome! I'm going to search for Clutch and see what they're like. Shame my brothers band broke up a while ago, they made some cracking tunes. :)
great tune, love it!
cool music...I thought maybe it was some new Corrosion of Conformity or a new band with Pepper Keenan....
I just bought that CD too.
What is this song / artist
sweet.
Hi Chris I have a question concerning how you put the copper pipe into the gas cilinder at minute 2 in the video. Indeed at minute 2.13 you show that the upper pipe is coming out from where? You did another little hole/window there?Another question is how long dose it take to have cold water inside Hot tub?Thnaks for your assistence
Hi Roberta, once I’d coiled the copper pipe up I measured the distance between the two straight ends and marked this onto the cylinder. I cut a hole roughly in the correct place then slid the coiled copper pipe up into the cylinder. It was a tight fit but it just about went in. The hot tub takes a few hours to heat up. Ideally I should have used thicker pipe or maybe a bigger gas cylinder. Or even insulated the walls of the hot tub. Hope this helps! 😊
great clear I will let you know what my husbund will do!Thanksr
Any suggestions for where to pick up a gas cylinder and scrap pallets for free/cheap as in the video?
Any businesses that use palletized freight. They usually toss them in the dumpsters or have to pay to dispose them. Those businesses usually are happy to give you the pallets. Just ask them. As far as the water tank. Look for potable water tanks instead of chemical. Less cleaning to worry about. Gas cylinders, scrap yards I would assume. That one uncertain of.
That is rad! Why not add some insulation between the cladding and the plastic container? It might burn less wood if you did that...
Excellent idea Gillian. If I built another one I would definitely do this! :)
I made one in my garage.. wife has no clue what I'm doing out there every night. I just made a heat exchanger off my shop woodstove
Cool idea. Whats the name of the song please??

Hi, was this your standard copper straight piping or did you use soft copper coils?
Hi, it was standard copper pipe filled with sand to stop any kinks.
In the video you don't really show it but how did you get the coil inside the container and have both ends come out of it?
Hey, with the long ends going in first I just carefully fed the copper coil in through the door. There was one small hole drilled on the side for one end of the copper tube to come out of, the other end came out at the top of the door.
Hell yeah!
How is this holding up?
So impressive- How long did this take make ?
Thanks Rachael, a couple of days from memory. :)
Would home owners insurance cover a fire caused by this?
Do you have a link of the plumbing connectors?
If you Google 'brass tank connectors' you'll see what they look like :)
i would put some insulation around plastic before putting wood on
Excellent idea. If I still had the hot tub this is definitely something I would do!
how did you attached the copper pipe in the bath? Glue or something? because you dont want to molt it
I used the same cooper connectors that are used on house hold boilers. They are about £1.50 each.
+Chris Jamieson thanks for your answers!
i also found one of those IBC containers for 20 euros on ebay so u can make it for cheaper now
Good work!
Could you tell me something about the temperature of the water when leaving the copper tube? without having a pump it must be like boiling right?
When filling, it depended on how fast the water was flowing through the copper pipe, the slower the flow, the hotter the water. Probably not far off boiling when it was very slow and a lot of heat. When the whole tub was full and in normal use the water was just very hot. In no way dangerous because of the volume of warm water it was going into. Basically the heat was escaping quicker than it was going into the tub. Hope this helps
Mm howmuch wire did you use which is inside the fire? I assume not too much. And doesn't the copper become to weak due to the high temperatures?
***** I used a 3m length, ideally a wider diameter pipe would have been better. The copper actually withstood the heat quite well. Wider pipe would mean you wouldn't have to have the copper pipe so close to the flames which would work better. Its all trial and error really.
why do you think a wider diameter would be more efficient? as the surface of the pipe doesn't get much larger in comparison do the water which has to flow true the pipe? As surface is diameter * pi * length, diameter will change but the amount of water will be lots more, radius * radius * pi. Or am i missing something?
***** My understanding would be that there is a larger volume of water being heated at one time.
How long does it heat the hot tub. thanks.
When i had it, about 4 hours! If i were going to make it again I would use larger diameter pipe and a bigger heat source! :)
Интересно!
Bad ass music who's the band?
Thanks Billy, it's my brothers band called The Mojo Filters :D
how did u empty the gas cylinder people say there are still fumes in it and a sparks made from cutting the tank for the door would ignite the fumes and explode the tank so how did u make sure this didnt happen.
When I got hold of the cylinder it had no stop valve which was a good indicator it was empty. To be ultra sure I wasn't going to be blown to kingdom come I simply filled the cylinder with water to get rid of any remaining gas. Once I drained all the water, I left the cylinder upside down for a few days before cutting it. Sorted.
ok thanks
This is great, but does anyone know the song?
My brothers band The Mojo Filters! :D 'Rock n Roll Freak' is the song
How did you attach the pallet wood to the metal frame?
Hey, I just used self tapping screws, being careful not to miss the frame and go into the plastic container!
Thanks, I plan on taking the plastic container out before attaching the cladding.
How long does it take to heat up?
It takes about 6 hours to heat. I would be quicker if I had insulated the lid and sides!
What diameter of Copper pipe did u used and what length
From memory maybe 20mm diameter, 2.4m length? It definitely needed to be fatter to heat more water though
Wow!!!
How did you attach the wood to the metal frame?
Max Lowson Just used self tapping screws, it is hilly billy style after all. :)
+Chris Jamieson :-D
Pretty neat man! Btw whats the songs name?
Cheers! Its my brothers band called The Mojo Filters, I forget the track name.. awesome song though right?
Yeah, it kinda reminds me of Ram Jam - Black Betty style, very cool.
@@chris_jamo where can we download that song

Where did you get the 200mm cardboard tube from?
Luckily it was left over packaging at work. If you wanted to buy one a company called Essex Tubes supply them. :)
Much appreciated
Hey Chris, what's the song and artist on the vid? Cheers .
Hi Paul, Its my brothers band called The Mojo Filters. They're awesome, but I would say that. :)
