  • How to build a hilly billy hot tub for under £50. The IBC container cost me £40, gas cylinder and pallets were free scrap, the only other thing I bought was a can of black spray paint and a couple of plumbing connectors. The copper pipe I had laying in the garage. All done in a massive rush for a garden party as one of my friends said it couldn't be done. Proved them wrong. :)
    The song is my brothers band The Mojo Filters - / the-mojo-filters-rock-...

    Great build, nice to see you putting my favourite free resource to good use. I recently went to a sales evening for these tubs (they're just starting to become popular in our corner of France), helluva price!!
    Happy tubbing, cheers, Andy aka Organikmechanic.

    This is a brilliant idea. Im a plumber by trade a d regularly come across copper cylinders. Might be able to rig something from that to transfer the heat quickly.

    Fecking brilliant mate. Our hillbilly hot tub is a 100 gallon Rubbermaid stock tub heated with a portable propane water heater. Takes about 20 minutes to fill half way with 110 degree water. Not sure how many fills we will get out of a 20 gallon tank of propane, but it only costs $10 to fill right now.
    I am hoping to figure out a way someday to use coiled copper pipe inside a rocket stove to heat the water. Out here in the redwoods we have tons of free fuel. Just not sure I have the patience to wait for it to heat up.
    Your getup is very nice looking, so nice it might not qualify as "hillbilly" now. LOL!

    Im going to build one for my dog, I will put anchoring straps on side. She is only two, but has mild hip dysplasia and now she can swim in the winter. This will keep her going while I save for surgery which is as much as a conventional hot tub. Thanks so much for all you do.

    hey there, I have watched this video a couple of times. love it. am thinkin if you come across some spare insulation you could jam it between the plastic and wood and insulate it proper like... keep up the good work mate.....

    • @makomike42
      @makomike42 3 года назад

      I was thinking the same pink board or even spray foam it. Then build a wood top that has pink board in it pretty up the top situation but still be insulated. Maybe he the coils routed lower so it doesn't take so long to have it cycle it self. Also a shut off so you don't continue to heat the system hotter than you want. Also if you wanted to go over the top you could put a gravity fed carbon filter to help keep your water longer. To take it even further could do a 2 jet pump to keep the water cycled and have a little hot tub jet affect.

    Just finished mine got bubbles now really powerful goes over top on full speed and can be done for around £29 with a £17 suction hose which comes with connections from b and q and a £12 lazy spa spare blower off eBay, dimmer switch and a tiny bit of playin. And ya don’t have to take it to bits if you already built it.
    managed to join and fit 2x3m 22mm copper pipe in a tight coil round a Ron seal fence paint tin cast with cement and it firsts perfect in the top of those gas bottles,
    I cut the bottle in half ya can empty and service it easier
    heating around 3c per hour in an ibc 3/4 full with just wood not fan assisted but may do that to increase it speed in winter.
    Loses 1-2 degrees in 24 hours used 100 mm base kingsman and 50 mm sides and flask lid.
    I use a lazy spa pump on the circuit too the filter helps and pumps keeps the water a safe low temp coming out the pipe.
    I love it!

    Hi chris See after you first time you filled it up using the hose pipe as a pump to push water through the coil, was it able to do it by itself once full by Thermosiphoning? Is there any other changes or things you would do differently with another one?
    Im wanting to make a slightly bigger one more rectagular or circular shape with like seats in it to chill in like a hot tube. im also trying to think of a more heat effiecent way, maybe instead of coiling it have a bigger barrel on its side with the piping like a car radiator setup curved slightly across the top inside of the barrel but then again im wondering if all the right angles would cause more water resistance and stop it Thermosiphoning. Any ideas or tips would be great cheers.

    When you get the IBC, check what was it previously held. Some are used for nasty chemicals and you'll be hard pressed to clean it out well enough to sit in the water you fill it with.

    Chris, Great Video well done. I'm in the process of building one, Does the burner seen in the video heat the water from cold if the IBC is full to start with? if so how long does it take to get up to temp? Regards Gez Lancashire

    • @chris_jamo
      @chris_jamo  8 лет назад +1

      +gezvic Cheers Gez! To be honest it would have been more efficient if the copper pipe was a larger diameter to heat a bigger volume of water quicker. From cold, it took about 5 hours to heat up, way too long in my opinion. If I made another one I would insulate the IBC container and use larger pipe. Good luck with your build!

    • @gezvic
      @gezvic 8 лет назад +1

      +Chris Jamieson, I've just attached pallets in their complete form to the sides as they fit perfectly, and i'm going to slot in kingspan insulation and foam gun the gaps. I was thinking of still using 15mm copper like you but maybe double the number of coils and possibly incorporate a pump. I'm taking photos so i'll make a slide show and link onto yours.

    One bit of advice for anyone else considering it.... venting a gas bottle by igniting it is just begging for pain... infinitely safer to fill the bottle with water then cut the panel out...

  • @dunc71
    @dunc71 3 года назад

    Nice cheap DIY build! Next time fill the cylinder with water to displace any gas that's left at atmospheric pressure, admittedly it's more fun to just light it... A taller and slightly larger diameter flue would create more draw increasing the heat output.

    • @joec754
      @joec754 8 лет назад +1

      If you got a pump and made a closed circut (plugged the drain from the tub into the pump) you could simply pump the water in circles to heat it.

  • @tvk1308

    Hey....
    Nice work
    does the water circulate it self, when heated...???

    • @ledieppe
      @ledieppe 10 лет назад

      It looks like, to me, that it only circulates when it's filled, and heated when it's filled. I suspect that if the fire is going it might have some circulation (heat water rising?), but unless it were pushed might not go anywhere.

    • @chris_jamo
      @chris_jamo  3 года назад +1

    • @chris_jamo
      @chris_jamo  6 лет назад +1

      It doesn't get hot enough :)

  • @CliveLowe
    @CliveLowe 10 лет назад +1

    Yes the water will circulate its self as the water like air becomes lighter when heated. You will need to have the inlet (Flow) higher than the outlet (Return)
    This is simple gravity heating, the same principle our grand parents had to heat their water for bathing. A few upgrades worth considering, Inside old hot water cylinders are 22mm or 28mm coils which may fit inside the cylinder as shown, you will get a much faster reheat using these and Insulating the whole tank will save you lots of time and fuel as well. Nice idea, obviously there are a few safety concerns as there are is no simple on off switch.

    • @marknovember
      @marknovember 9 лет назад +2

      Isnt it like: inlet down outlet above to keep the water flowing>?
      Because the water will rise in the fireplace

    • @CliveLowe
      @CliveLowe 9 лет назад +1

      Metaldetecting Europe The top tapping on the heater should connect to the top tapping of the tank, ideally this will be higher to help the flow, there's plenty of information on gravity heating systems, I may have not been so clear with my description above cheers

    Hi Chris I have a question concerning how you put the copper pipe into the gas cilinder at minute 2 in the video. Indeed at minute 2.13 you show that the upper pipe is coming out from where? You did another little hole/window there?Another question is how long dose it take to have cold water inside Hot tub?Thnaks for your assistence

    • @chris_jamo
      @chris_jamo  6 лет назад

      Hi Roberta, once I’d coiled the copper pipe up I measured the distance between the two straight ends and marked this onto the cylinder. I cut a hole roughly in the correct place then slid the coiled copper pipe up into the cylinder. It was a tight fit but it just about went in. The hot tub takes a few hours to heat up. Ideally I should have used thicker pipe or maybe a bigger gas cylinder. Or even insulated the walls of the hot tub. Hope this helps! 😊

    • @loribeam4360
      @loribeam4360 5 лет назад

      Any businesses that use palletized freight. They usually toss them in the dumpsters or have to pay to dispose them. Those businesses usually are happy to give you the pallets. Just ask them. As far as the water tank. Look for potable water tanks instead of chemical. Less cleaning to worry about. Gas cylinders, scrap yards I would assume. That one uncertain of.

    In the video you don't really show it but how did you get the coil inside the container and have both ends come out of it?

    • @chris_jamo
      @chris_jamo  6 лет назад

      Hey, with the long ends going in first I just carefully fed the copper coil in through the door. There was one small hole drilled on the side for one end of the copper tube to come out of, the other end came out at the top of the door.

    Could you tell me something about the temperature of the water when leaving the copper tube? without having a pump it must be like boiling right?

    • @chris_jamo
      @chris_jamo  9 лет назад

      When filling, it depended on how fast the water was flowing through the copper pipe, the slower the flow, the hotter the water. Probably not far off boiling when it was very slow and a lot of heat. When the whole tub was full and in normal use the water was just very hot. In no way dangerous because of the volume of warm water it was going into. Basically the heat was escaping quicker than it was going into the tub. Hope this helps

    • @sjorsbeans
      @sjorsbeans 9 лет назад

      Mm howmuch wire did you use which is inside the fire? I assume not too much. And doesn't the copper become to weak due to the high temperatures?

    • @chris_jamo
      @chris_jamo  9 лет назад

      ***** I used a 3m length, ideally a wider diameter pipe would have been better. The copper actually withstood the heat quite well. Wider pipe would mean you wouldn't have to have the copper pipe so close to the flames which would work better. Its all trial and error really.

    • @sjorsbeans
      @sjorsbeans 9 лет назад

      why do you think a wider diameter would be more efficient? as the surface of the pipe doesn't get much larger in comparison do the water which has to flow true the pipe? As surface is diameter * pi * length, diameter will change but the amount of water will be lots more, radius * radius * pi. Or am i missing something?

    • @chris_jamo
      @chris_jamo  9 лет назад

      ***** My understanding would be that there is a larger volume of water being heated at one time.

    how did u empty the gas cylinder people say there are still fumes in it and a sparks made from cutting the tank for the door would ignite the fumes and explode the tank so how did u make sure this didnt happen.

    • @chris_jamo
      @chris_jamo  8 лет назад +2

      When I got hold of the cylinder it had no stop valve which was a good indicator it was empty. To be ultra sure I wasn't going to be blown to kingdom come I simply filled the cylinder with water to get rid of any remaining gas. Once I drained all the water, I left the cylinder upside down for a few days before cutting it. Sorted.
