  • Well it's 2 years since I made this film, with hindsight I really should not have shown the creature, what was I thinking..........duh. Anyway, hope you enjoy regardless!
    Recommend watching this over at Vimeo :D www.vimeo.com/10281182
    This is a story adapted from Dagon by HP Lovecraft.
    Content credits are listed at the end of the film, with special mention to the pose creator, Del May, for creating so many unique and emotive poses (available at her shop in-world)
    A very big thanks to Carlos, the narrator, for being a great voice artist, and also the easiest person in the world to get along with!
    The initial idea for this animation/machinima was to create a weird horror film in a noir/comic style using a digital graphic novel format. However, as the film progressed, it took on a life of its own and became more of a traditional machinima film. It is also not nearly as weird as I had imagined.
    Techie details: With the exception of the 2 images in the credits, no green screen has been used. Shaky bits are intentional. Pshop was used for the statue texture. No colour filters were used in this film, all colours were achieved within Second Life, including the washed out dream sequence (windlight fog). Shadows filmed with the Emerald Client. The particles of weather/fire/mist/pulsing sun were filmed inside SL.
    *At the moment, I think the weakest point of the film is the ending, I do like the crazy episode and the walking shots. I will probably go back and redo the end scene at some point, when I figure out what it needs.
    Sound was designed from the freesoundproject.org (available under creative commons). Attribution list here:
    docs.google.com/View?id=df8fq6hr_238gc3vjtdn
    Texture credits and linkbacks: (will link when I can get deviant art to work for me again).

    Don't beat yourself up about your decision to show the creature. We had to see something, and you kept its appearance brief and vague enough. All in all, this a great adaptation.

      I don't get how people come up with illustrations and fan art when Lovecraft himself barely even described the creatures in his stories.
      Then again, that was probably the point. You can't describe the undescribeable.

    I think Mr. Lovecraft would be pleased.
    It provides a neat perspective, some nice attention to detail, great timing, and to the point.
    Nicely done.

    The thing a lot of people tend to miss about Lovecraft's stories is that he had a penchant for not actually describing much of the horrors he thought up. It added to the mystery, and the terror, of the reader to allow their own imagination fill in the blanks. Dagon was no exception to that. I have always wondered what the great, black creature from the abyss would appear as, and this was a beautifully mastered answer. Thank you!

    Didn't Lovecraft described the creature in his story? I don't see how you could have made this without showing it. Besides, it would have been a let down. I wish film makers wouldn't try to be too clever for their own good. This was excellently done just as it stands.

    I've listened to a dozen or so of these lovecraft stories and they are more or less all the same story. It start with a man losing his sanity, then he recounts his experience on the ocean or some crypt with a squid like monster and then he either kills himself in the end, is killed by a monster, or gives a gloomy outlook on his life and implies he will be killed soon. It's such a bland formula once you see it repeat in every lovecraft story. But this video was done incredibly well. I like it.

    Is it strange that I had a dream about Shadow Over Innsmouth before I ever knew and heard about Lovecrafts work? I had this dream when I was around 8 or 9 y/o. And I dreamt it again back when I was 14 then I dream it again over and over just a week ago and last was last night, but last night was a little different because in the end of my dream the Deep Ones got me and made me like them. This all started before I even knew about H.P Lovecrafts stories. When I did heard about his story everything to me sounded familiar because it felt like I have been in it. I'm still weirded out a little bit until now.

    Although I enjoy the story in its totality, I think it is great how you reduced the first 'chapter' of the tale to propel it directly into the action. Whilst I agree with your comments that it is better if the monster if barely shown, I think the lead up to it produces significant tension. I also think that, considering how limited Second Life was at the time that you made this, you did an excellent job; sufficient that people can still enjoy it, twelve years later.

      @puffythedestroyer8878 3 года назад +2

      @@redlibra1446 WOW. Lovecraft always knew his details! I'm surprised that notion had eluded me more subtly than all the other connections.

    • @redlibra1446
      @redlibra1446 3 года назад +2

      Someone should make a theory about that.

    • @redlibra1446
      @redlibra1446 3 года назад +2

      @@puffythedestroyer8878 But, with every theory, there's always holes in them, like:
      -If the narrator is Douglas Williamson, why doesn't he mention the Marsh family?
      -In "The Shadow Over Innsmouth", it's mentioned that Douglass killed himself by shooting himself in the head, not jumping off a building. Also, Robert never mentions anything about morphine when regarding Douglas.
      -The narrator is a sea merchant and it's never stated what was Douglas' profession before he died (This point could still be possible. Considering the Marsh/Orne/Williamson/Olmstead family are a family of hybrids, their job professions might have something to do with the water in some way, like hydrology, or marine biology, or even a sea merchant. At the end of the day, we don't know and it's all up to interpretation, which is the beauty of cosmic horror. A lot of these things in Lovecraft's stories are left ambiguous, it's meant for our minds, as the reader, to fill in the blanks).
      -Maybe Lovecraft forgot about some details in "Dagon", when he was developing the story for "The Shadow Over Innsmouth"? Maybe he intended for the narrator of Dagon to be mentioned somewhere in it but scrapped it? It's not uncommon for an author, who has been writing for as long as Lovecraft, to begin to forget some details from past works. I mean "Dagon" came out first in 1917, just 20 years before "The Shadow Over Innsmouth" (1937) and according to the Lovecraft wiki, "Dagon" foreshadows the events that happen in "Call of Cthulhu" and "The Shadow Over Innsmouth".
      -Maybe it's possible or maybe it's all just a coincidence?

Thank you for the effort you put into its creation.

However, I think if you had spent more time on his experiences in the muddy place and less time having psychedelic visions, it would've been better, but I realise that might take considerably more animation? Anyways, cool creature!

    It's possibly one of the best narrations of Dagon I've heard as there is a lot more emotion in it than some. The CGI doesn't really suit it though. It's better than I could do, by a long shot, but I think that Lovecraft largely needs to be left to the imagination.
    You said it yourself though, you shouldn't have shown Dagon.
    My only other critique would be to remove the sounds of Dagon at the end, it's more implied that it's his madness driving him to it than Dagon 'actually' being there.
