Can't tell You what your trip did for Me . Almost eleven years ago I worked for just under a year in out around and through San Raphael , Capitol Reef and Goblin. I was in a Wilderness treatment program as a Coach/Chaplain and I was in heaven - worked out there from a vehicle everyday and went into "town" at night to my room . Suddenly the Downturn came in; closed our program (after they had a very successful 15 years (I just hired in, the last year). Long story - In all over 300 people lost their jobs and poor Wayne County croaked. I am now Permanently -totally disabled and will never see (no- never hike or 4 wheel in to) some of the things YOU took me to SEE!! Life dreams You gave ME - I THANK YOU!! I had 8 or 9 months to see the hundreds of miles, monuments and features - got just a taste and it was over. I'm 66 now and busted up but so grateful to a higher power For YOU TWO and tech that let me see Angel Arch, All American Man - etc. Blessings & Namaste.

super video. we made it most of the way in our tiny 86 2wd truck in 2020 but stopped short of the Temples due to storms coming in/didnt want to get stuck/ had seen the Temples on all the souvenirs 6 yrs prior, had to get a view of them in person hahah/ such an amazing place thanks for the super sharp video
My son and I did the Cathedral Loop as part of his 2 week father/son road trip for his 13th birthday a few weeks back. Was definitely one of the highlights of our trip! We camped at the Cathedral Valley primitive campground and loved it! Can’t wait to take the rest of the family some day!
This video brought back memories of when my wife and I did the whole Cathedral Loop a couple of years ago. I, like you didn't know this part of Capital Reef existed, so it made it exciting not knowing what to expect. Really enjoyed your video of the Bentonite Hills. Did you make it to Cathedral Valley? Love Capitol Reef!! I planned my trip last year specifically to see the Temple of the Moon and Sun! That whole area is so diverse. Amazing footage of the Bentonite Hills!!

I have a soft spot for this area. I keep going and then keep going back. I could spend months between Hiite and Capitol Reef....and now, after this trip, I can include the San Rafael Swell in my favorite playground.

Love your videos, and this one was no exception! Very excited to be visiting Capitol Reef this September, and exploring Cathedral Valley for the very first time. What is your recommendation on airing down the tires for this drive? Keep that exploring spirit!
We didn't air down at all for this. Pretty much a stock 4Runner with off road tires. It has a leveling kit on it but it wasn't needed for this. The only slightly sketchy part was the cut through that we did to go over to the road that had the Temple of the Sun and Moon on it, but I bet if you followed the longer route around it would be fine for anything that could make the river crossing. (Not that the shortcut was that bad either.)
WOW, crazy landscape. The only national park in utah i havent seen. The landscape looked as great as that Margarita looked. Are we going to have to start calling your channel Jerry Utah ???? Way to be guys - helping out a fellow adventurer.
I love Utah.....And I haven't even explored the top half yet! But I have to admit, I'm glad it's finally getting cooler and I can get out around AZ more. Capitol Reef is one of my favorite parks. Still have lots to explore there.
Great video, one of my new favorite channels. I’m sure you know this, but when crossing creeks and rivers, if the water is deeper than the differential, you risk sucking in water into it through the breather valve and ruining it. For about $80, you can buy a diff breather kit and either install it yourself, or have an off road shop do it for you.
Awesome area, if you' kept going north a bit you get to a way to get on top on the mesa and there's a nice free campground that surprisingly got great Verizon reception; of course then the Jeep people would have been out of luck. Great job on the rescue. Capital is a wonderful day or two on the way to Bryce and Zion.
Yeah, we originally planned to go up to the mesa, but cut across because we had some other stuff we wanted to see but were worried about time. We ended up cutting it short to take the guy back to his other truck which is fine; we really didn't have any firm plans for the day. Still so much to check out in that area.
Did this, all of cathedral gorge, in a Mazda 2 this June, 2022. Glass mountain was a highlight! The end going up and out into the National Forest over bowling ball sized wash stone was the crux. LMAO at the 4x4 Jeep owners who got stuck....
They didn't get stuck; their Jeep broke down. Some people have Toyotas because they like to drive off road. Some people like to drive off road and also work on their vehicles a lot. Those people get Jeeps.
The river's easy, the sand beyond the river could be a problem, the bentonite hills really would be a problem if wet. The Bentonite hills are pretty unique even for Utah. All of the overlooks on that road are pretty neat. For the sake of your viewers maybe point out that most of that road is not in the national park so drone flying is ok. I'm still wondering how you got from the river to temple of the sun- that requires a sketchy shortcut or driving the entire loop.
We did the sketchy shortcut. And this video is definitely short on info. Some days I feel a lot more like exploring than filming and end up forgetting stuff.
There are a couple shots of the shortcut after I land the drone and before we get to the Temple of the Sun and Moon. It has some rocky sections. The 'normal' loop goes up the mountain to a campground and back down where we caught up with it. Not sure if that section is better than the shorter route we took.
@@JerryArizona A couple years ago we did the loop the opposite direction and camped at the campground, the road up to it was worse than the rocky section you showed on your shortcut but in a higher clearance vehicle not too bad. Airing down tires would help, there were really bad washboard sections of the road. I also wouldn't recommend doing much of it when it's wet, I can't imagine how slick those roads would be.
Coming in on Cathedral Road which comes off 24 just west of Caineville gets you to the Temples in about an hour depending on your speed and number of photo stops. There was very little in the way of clay sections on the road, so you might make it when it is wet, or might not. Easy with stock 4x4 and maybe with a higher clearance 2wd.
I couldn't help taking a little dig on Jeep owners. But seriously, the poor dude had a complete electrical system failure. It could've happened to anyone in a Jee......vehicle.
Most of this video is actually on BLM land adjacent to the park. So no drone permit required. Temple of the Sun and Moon ARE inside Capitol Reef, so no drone shots there.
You can sorta kinda do a scenic detour all the way from fruita via that road to goblin state park then via cut in cliffs to hwy70 and eventually end up at the wedge. On backside of where you were looking at the temples there are thousands of acres of colorful purple cliffs colored rainbow. Having 4x4 helps see more hehehee
We cut across from Hartnet Road to Cainville Wash Road to see Temple of the Sun and Moon. Next time we need to check out the full loop. So much to see out there.
Great video. Would you describe exactly where the place on the cover photo of this video is located? It looks amazing! I'm assuming it's on the Cathedral Valley Road from Cainesville to Temple of the Sun but I have not seen that place in other videos I've seen of that route.
It's on Hartnet Rd or the south loop, and not Cathedral Valley Rd or the north loop. Sometimes people refer to the whole loop as Cathedral Valley Rd even though technically it is not. The South loop fords the Fremont River. You reach the Bentonite Hills in around 10 miles or so - it is the first major attraction on the drive, and very notable
Those hills are stunning! Random question: Do you know what frame rate you've got your drone set to film at? It looks from the footage that it might be 24fps.
Actually....I'm not sure. I can't remember if I'm at 60p or 24p. I film a lot with 60p so I can slow it down to 80% or 40%, and still export in 24p with no fractional dropped frames. Not sure if my logic and math works, but I haven't seen that choppiness I used to get with pan shots back in the day.
@@JerryArizona That's exactly why I was asking. All the shots were beautiful, but there were a couple that had enough stutter that I wasn't sure if it was a framerate mismatch or a slow SD card (I've had both in my videos). Regardless, keep it up! Killer video as always.
It's about the fastest SD card you can get. Same that I have in the GoPro's and EOSR and what was recommended by DJI. Might be that it's a first gen Mavic....might just be my settings. I have never figured that thing out completely. 23.976p, 4096X2160, DLog. I think I set the framerate and let the shutter speed and ISO be auto. It's probably a problem with shutter speed not being 2X framerate then. I don't get to fly the thing enough to really learn it well.
Ooof. I don't know if I'd try it in a Challenger. I was gonna say maybe go around the way we went out, but there were still rough spots. I don't think you'd have enough clearance. And we took a cut across that was rougher than all the other roads, so I'm not sure what the sections we skipped were like.
Ha! I definitely make note of three things; 1) showers you can rent, 2) dispersed camping and 3) good mexican restaurants. This was the one attached to the gas station (!) at Capitol Reef. It's never been open when we were there before, but it was actually pretty good.
Thanks for sharing! I was at Hanksville's MDRC and Swing Arm City earlier this year, but didn't know about the Temple of the Moon and Sun. I assume a 4WD with high clearance is a definite needed? No other way get to it with a SUV 2WD?
We went in Hartnet Road coming from Capitol Reef toward Hanksville. I think if you go in the way we come out (going in Cainville Wash Road, you could skip the river crossing and make it with a 2WD. High clearance wasn't needed for that part. There are a couple sections of sand, but bring a shovel and sand boards to be safe and I think you'd be fine.
i did it in my 2wd 86 nissan in 2020. take it very slow using the route they describe which by the video would be go in and out the way they left. due to storms we stopped a bit short of the Temples but got a good view of them. sometimes there is deep sand. a few weeks after we went storms hit the road and a section near the temples was all sand, Rangers reported many people being stuck.
Most of this is actually on BLM ground outside the park, so drones are allowed there. The Temple of the Sun & Moon are inside the park boundary (there's a quick shot of the boundary sign as we drive in) and I couldn't fly there. It's always tricky with drones....
We did Hartnet Road, then took a shortcut across to Cainville Wash Road. The shortcut road and the river crossing were borderline 4WD required. All the rest of it would be fine with 2WD as long as it wasn't wet or snowy.
I'm just joking. If you watch some of my other videos, you'll know I'm a complete noob at off roading, so I really don't have the credibility to talk with any seriousness about anyone's choice of vehicle. (Tina actually does most of the driving.) Jeepers are fine by me.
@@Viajando6301 i believe everything shown in this video is part of the Cathedral Valley Loop. The loop starts/ends by crossing the river at the beginning of the video. A Corolla won't get you to what you see here. But this is the North of Capitol Reef. There's still a lot more in this NP that your Corolla can drive you to.
Like Manuel C said, probably not across the river up Harnet Road. You can take Cainville Wash Road up to Temple of the Sun and Moon and you'd probably be fine. It goes all the way around to the Bentonite Hills, but we did not do the entire loop up to the Mesa/campground, so I can't comment on that section of road. The shortcut between Hartnet and Cainville Wash that we took is probably too much for a Corolla as well.
@@Viajando6301 I took a 2006 RAV4 with front-wheel drive there, but the corolla might be a bit too low. It would be risky, even if you get across the river.
This was right outside the park. I forget the name, but the place was attached to a gas station. It was surprisingly good, but it's been closed every other time we were there. Someone in the comments said there was a great mexican place in Torrey but the chef has since left. A quick Google search and it looks like Cafe Diablo is now closed. I'm guessing he was talking about Cafe Diablo; we didn't see any Mexican restaurants in Torrey unfortunately.
@@JerryArizona sorry to hear Cafe Diablo is closed. I had some great meals there. They had their own vegetables garden. The owner moved there from Detroit because he liked the nature around there a lot. It's a shame the place ia closed now.
Luckily, the bentonite hills are on BLM ground. You leave the park, then re-enter before Temple of the Sun and Moon (hence no drone footage of them). I want to do the whole loop some time. We cut off where it goes up to the mountains.
@@dantheman1624 I get the rule, for sure. And it's complicated where you can and can't fly. I joke that the rule of thumb is if it's worth filming, you aren't allowed to fly. So I get excited in the few places you can. But it would be an absolutel cluster if they let you fly them in parks.

Oh ya!! I LOVE that part of Capitol Reef National Park! Such a fun drive. But… I think it’s illegal to fly drones in National Parks… so, I would not recommend doing it again.
I need to check to see if you can add text to a video after it's posted. I didn't mention that all the drone shots are on BLM ground just outside the park. Temple of the Sun and Moon were about the only areas shown actually inside Capitol Reef. There's a quick shot of the truck going past the boundary sign. Otherwise, that's what's so fun in that area; BLM ground with less restrictions.
The area where I was flying is actually BLM ground just outside the park. When we went to Temple of the Moon/Sun, you cross back over into the park and can't fly.
You can go in the way we went out. Don’t have the route and it’s been a while but you can look on Google earth, maps or a gps and look for other roads. I believe we went out by Cainville and there were no water crossings from that direction. Edit: I think it’s called Cainville wash road. Look at the maps and connect it to Hartnet Road and you can avoid the water crossing.

Don't mind at all. But I try to capture the trip as close to reality as I can, and, unfortunately, we curse like sailors. So a lack of bleeps will be difficult to say the least. Sorry for that. It's who we are.
True. But the areas I flew in are on BLM ground just outside the park. The Temple of the Sun and Moon are the only part that were within park boundaries. Wish I'd clarified this in the video (or could after posting.)

No. The title is kinda misleading, I suppose. But no one is looking for "Stuff near and partially in Capitol Reef". The Bentonite Hills and Cainville Wash Road are in BLM ground adjacent to the park and it's totally legal to fly there. Temple of the Sun, Temple of the Moon and Glass Mountain are inside the park. Wish I could modify a video after it's posted, but unfortunately I can't.
You could probably get up Cainville Wash Road to Temple of the Sun and Moon (that's the road we took out where we found the Jeep). Don't think I'd want to do the river crossing or the sand right after on Hartnet. Definitely not the crossover road we took between Harnet and Cainville. Not sure how good or bad the roads are further up to the mesa if you skip the crossover.

We may have driven part of that on this trip. The Wedge is coming up next week.
We are heading there tomorrow from St George Ut. We are staying at the Cathedral valley campground. Doing the loop in our jeep.

It's on Hartnet Rd or the south loop, and not Cathedral Valley Rd or the north loop. Sometimes people refer to the whole loop as Cathedral Valley Rd even though technically it is not. The South loop fords the Fremont River. You reach the Bentonite Hills in around 10 miles or so - it is the first major attraction on the drive, and very notable

Those hills are stunning! Random question: Do you know what frame rate you've got your drone set to film at? It looks from the footage that it might be 24fps.
Actually....I'm not sure. I can't remember if I'm at 60p or 24p. I film a lot with 60p so I can slow it down to 80% or 40%, and still export in 24p with no fractional dropped frames. Not sure if my logic and math works, but I haven't seen that choppiness I used to get with pan shots back in the day.

@@JerryArizona That's exactly why I was asking. All the shots were beautiful, but there were a couple that had enough stutter that I wasn't sure if it was a framerate mismatch or a slow SD card (I've had both in my videos). Regardless, keep it up! Killer video as always.
It's about the fastest SD card you can get. Same that I have in the GoPro's and EOSR and what was recommended by DJI. Might be that it's a first gen Mavic....might just be my settings. I have never figured that thing out completely. 23.976p, 4096X2160, DLog. I think I set the framerate and let the shutter speed and ISO be auto. It's probably a problem with shutter speed not being 2X framerate then. I don't get to fly the thing enough to really learn it well.

Can you make it to Bentonite hill with a rear wheel drive? I have a Dodge Challenger, thinking of using it to go there next week.
Ooof. I don't know if I'd try it in a Challenger. I was gonna say maybe go around the way we went out, but there were still rough spots. I don't think you'd have enough clearance. And we took a cut across that was rougher than all the other roads, so I'm not sure what the sections we skipped were like.
I'm beginning to think you plan all of your trips around a Mexican restaurant that has good lookin' margaritas. I'm in! haha
Ha! I definitely make note of three things; 1) showers you can rent, 2) dispersed camping and 3) good mexican restaurants. This was the one attached to the gas station (!) at Capitol Reef. It's never been open when we were there before, but it was actually pretty good.

Thanks for sharing! I was at Hanksville's MDRC and Swing Arm City earlier this year, but didn't know about the Temple of the Moon and Sun. I assume a 4WD with high clearance is a definite needed? No other way get to it with a SUV 2WD?
We went in Hartnet Road coming from Capitol Reef toward Hanksville. I think if you go in the way we come out (going in Cainville Wash Road, you could skip the river crossing and make it with a 2WD. High clearance wasn't needed for that part. There are a couple sections of sand, but bring a shovel and sand boards to be safe and I think you'd be fine.
i did it in my 2wd 86 nissan in 2020. take it very slow using the route they describe which by the video would be go in and out the way they left. due to storms we stopped a bit short of the Temples but got a good view of them. sometimes there is deep sand. a few weeks after we went storms hit the road and a section near the temples was all sand, Rangers reported many people being stuck.

Selenite and you can see pieces glistening in the hills for quite a distance (assuming the sun is shining!).

Most of this is actually on BLM ground outside the park, so drones are allowed there. The Temple of the Sun & Moon are inside the park boundary (there's a quick shot of the boundary sign as we drive in) and I couldn't fly there. It's always tricky with drones....

Did you feel the need for four wheel drive in the BLM or park area???
We did Hartnet Road, then took a shortcut across to Cainville Wash Road. The shortcut road and the river crossing were borderline 4WD required. All the rest of it would be fine with 2WD as long as it wasn't wet or snowy.
You didn't have to look so superior with the smug smile when talking about the Jeepers. I have been rescued by Jeepers so it works both ways.
I'm just joking. If you watch some of my other videos, you'll know I'm a complete noob at off roading, so I really don't have the credibility to talk with any seriousness about anyone's choice of vehicle. (Tina actually does most of the driving.) Jeepers are fine by me.

@@Viajando6301 i believe everything shown in this video is part of the Cathedral Valley Loop. The loop starts/ends by crossing the river at the beginning of the video. A Corolla won't get you to what you see here. But this is the North of Capitol Reef. There's still a lot more in this NP that your Corolla can drive you to.
Like Manuel C said, probably not across the river up Harnet Road. You can take Cainville Wash Road up to Temple of the Sun and Moon and you'd probably be fine. It goes all the way around to the Bentonite Hills, but we did not do the entire loop up to the Mesa/campground, so I can't comment on that section of road. The shortcut between Hartnet and Cainville Wash that we took is probably too much for a Corolla as well.
@@Viajando6301 I took a 2006 RAV4 with front-wheel drive there, but the corolla might be a bit too low. It would be risky, even if you get across the river.
Was that Cafe Diablo restaurant in Torrey (the town by the park)?
This was right outside the park. I forget the name, but the place was attached to a gas station. It was surprisingly good, but it's been closed every other time we were there. Someone in the comments said there was a great mexican place in Torrey but the chef has since left. A quick Google search and it looks like Cafe Diablo is now closed. I'm guessing he was talking about Cafe Diablo; we didn't see any Mexican restaurants in Torrey unfortunately.
@@JerryArizona sorry to hear Cafe Diablo is closed. I had some great meals there. They had their own vegetables garden. The owner moved there from Detroit because he liked the nature around there a lot. It's a shame the place ia closed now.

Luckily, the bentonite hills are on BLM ground. You leave the park, then re-enter before Temple of the Sun and Moon (hence no drone footage of them). I want to do the whole loop some time. We cut off where it goes up to the mountains.

@@dantheman1624 I get the rule, for sure. And it's complicated where you can and can't fly. I joke that the rule of thumb is if it's worth filming, you aren't allowed to fly. So I get excited in the few places you can. But it would be an absolutel cluster if they let you fly them in parks.

Oh ya!! I LOVE that part of Capitol Reef National Park! Such a fun drive. But… I think it’s illegal to fly drones in National Parks… so, I would not recommend doing it again.
I need to check to see if you can add text to a video after it's posted. I didn't mention that all the drone shots are on BLM ground just outside the park. Temple of the Sun and Moon were about the only areas shown actually inside Capitol Reef. There's a quick shot of the truck going past the boundary sign. Otherwise, that's what's so fun in that area; BLM ground with less restrictions.
How did you get a permit to fly?
The area where I was flying is actually BLM ground just outside the park. When we went to Temple of the Moon/Sun, you cross back over into the park and can't fly.
Can you get to Bentonite Hills without driving down the wash with water.... only have an AWD SUV.
You can go in the way we went out. Don’t have the route and it’s been a while but you can look on Google earth, maps or a gps and look for other roads. I believe we went out by Cainville and there were no water crossings from that direction. Edit: I think it’s called Cainville wash road. Look at the maps and connect it to Hartnet Road and you can avoid the water crossing.

Don't mind at all. But I try to capture the trip as close to reality as I can, and, unfortunately, we curse like sailors. So a lack of bleeps will be difficult to say the least. Sorry for that. It's who we are.

Based on the title of the video you knew you were in a National Park and you still chose to fly the drone?
No. The title is kinda misleading, I suppose. But no one is looking for "Stuff near and partially in Capitol Reef". The Bentonite Hills and Cainville Wash Road are in BLM ground adjacent to the park and it's totally legal to fly there. Temple of the Sun, Temple of the Moon and Glass Mountain are inside the park. Wish I could modify a video after it's posted, but unfortunately I can't.

You could probably get up Cainville Wash Road to Temple of the Sun and Moon (that's the road we took out where we found the Jeep). Don't think I'd want to do the river crossing or the sand right after on Hartnet. Definitely not the crossover road we took between Harnet and Cainville. Not sure how good or bad the roads are further up to the mesa if you skip the crossover.
