In comparison 1x12mb Voodoo 2 would only allow up to 800x600 resolution, whereas adding the 2nd in SLI (via cable) allowed the picture to interlace together to increase the resolution and frame rate, each card would alternate each line - good times. These guys were legends. I remember Immy randomly walking into the office depot I worked at back in the day, I was star struck LMAO. So many good memories of this game.
This is awesome, it is great to look a demo 20 years old and see how these guys fight each other deceiving with noises, this is especially notorious at 8:35 when he shoots to cover the pick up of the rocket launcher (he fails to execute it) and the proceeds to drop down and jump in place to trick his enemy into thinking he left that spot, marvelous, that put a huge grin on my face. I am not saying we don't see this nowadays but it is rarer.
Just play any game of Rapha, the currently reigning Quale champion and you'll see a lot pf trickery, mind games, trap-setting and so on. That said, I was there when this was happening and even though I am sure it existed before Q2 as well - it sure felt new and mind-blowing at the time. :)
He didnt even shoot at 8:35? How do you know he wanted to shoot but failed, funny :D Btw, quake 2 has evolved hugely since this. Also at the time you posted. These 2 would get raped by pretty much anyone playing. So, you saying this stuff is rarer now, is not true. All the stuff they do are common now, even among the lowest ranked players. In 1998 this was top play, since 2005 it is just bad. Low accuracy, very slow movement, bad tactics.
Classic My heroes in Q2 days. but i rather watch the old Quake World games. I was good in Q2 and Q3 CTF and also played Quake World and that was the best game ever! require skills. well anyway i'm now 51 and i like to watch the old games. Not playing anymore :p
I wish I had started with QW. I played Q2 from 1998 until 2002 until I discovered QW. It literally blew my mind. So much faster, so much more skill required. There's still an active QW scene, I hope you are aware?
I wholly disagree that QW requires "more skill" -- look at q2 4v4 tdm: all the weap/ammo drops, position plays, team comms not to mention that q2 requires skill with -- let's count all the weaps -- hyper, rl, rg, cg, sg, gl and completely unique to q2 -- handgrenades. In fact, if you've seen any high-level 4v4 q2tdm play, you would know handgrenades can completely turn a 15min match around. Apples to oranges, like rat is to purri.
Have you ever seen a QW 4on4 match? Yes, I do agree that Q2's drop system adds SOME complexity. You have to realize how backwards Q2 team comms are, just watch a QW demo and you'll see what I mean.
I still say apples to oranges; just because your ups ceiling is higher doesn't mean more skill. Look at q2's rg delay, cg spinup delay, handgrenade timing -- hell even slower rl -- those timing elements add a magnitude of difficulty. The other elephant in the room is the level of competition year in and year out that elevates the level of play, discovering glitches that result in enhanced gameplay (e.g. quake double jumps FIRST appeared in q2 point release 3.14 which revolutionized q2dm1 game, like doubling to mega, etc.) Are you gonna tell me iC wasn't as skilled as a QW squad simply because iC was vq3? Or the Scandie/Polish 4v4teams rocking the NDML leagues for over 10 years strong weren't as skilled simply because they were q2? While I was starstruck by watching LocKtar win during the last quakecon duel final, the real quake god was over in the q2 bracket EASILY taking home $5k final: [POL] David. David's reign over both the q2 duel and tdm leagues AND mastery using the FIVE primary weaps(and you NEED to use them) is astonishing. I have no doubt about the motor skills muscle memory required in QW, but look at the sheer size of tdm maps in q2(dm8 warehouse) and imagine all the powerups, two different armors, shards and weap areas to control. Thank goodness q2 IS slower -- time to think&strategize. Rapha's brainy 'five steps ahead' applies perfectly.
I had been playing very high level Quake 2 before I moved to QW. I was on the same lan as one of the best Polish players ever to have played the game (HCK.Scooby) and I still claim that QW requires a shit ton more skill to master it.
Played this before the millenium with everybody from brother to grandma (nobody could beat my 60yo grandmother back then she was insane). We still have it stashed somewhere with our old ps1 oldest design, I guess its time to challenge her and beat her this time!
I like how in in the first game the beginning of the match they are all stealthy and conserve ammo as much as possible, but near the end it just turns into a frag mess and a standard DM match.
it is a damn good duel map for q2 at least. not sure i'd wanna play a CPM or quakeworld duel on it though. maybe vq3 with osp. just like aerowalk is kind of an ass duel map on quake2 but its a great map on quakeworld and q3 cpm
We should all reinstall quake 2 and keep it going. With todays hardware imagine how good this games will run now. And plus this games is easy as hell to mod.
RTX makes it look so funky and SAME !! but.. now not flat washed textures. Wow I forgot about that and the Celeron 300-A whoops my bad the 450-A every time for free. LOL Then you fire the blaster and go what the fuck this is retro reversal wtf day :D its just so weird. I couldn't do it hahaha i played a little just to see a bit more about how the fancy almost real, realtime, RT... damn thats a slick trick and not many bugs in those new full support games, even early on with RTX driver #2 or something. I was pretty impressed.
can someone please help me with q2 console? I want to be able to move and shoot as smoothly as my q3 config but I cant find any source with the console commands that I need. to change the enemy color, to be able to do smooth strafes, mouse config, etc... any help or links will be much appreciated.
When i reach that video, i was imagin that it will be usual for me. My best map was q2dm1 (the Edge) but frug pipe (ohh). First memories was about playing that game wo 3D card (after it was with Vodoo 2) guess am right. I remember how many times we played to know about each respown of that game, ammo and weapons, to know the sounds are were located and how faster to come over it (even to jump form the lift button to second floor, jump to middle of circle in 2nd floor, and oh that railgun. It was nice, we like it, we played in LAN and played at internet, get tournoments and has own setup with exect from file jeyboard, own mouses and so on. First time to play with mouse and use sensitivity, undertanding that rocket launcher not always best solution, with one shout of railgun become real professionals (as well if you can jump to the edge from small evelator at q2dm1) - you know what at telling about)))) just if you have same memories, please like comment, so i know am not only one at this planet.
if we and youtube live that much, we will be able to watch this in 2050 at the age 60+ for most of the us. so I am saluting also those who are watching in 2050. we loved this game back in our days.
I loved playing online in those days. Returning to quake via Q3live and quake champions has been horrible. Like I have no skills anymore. I may not have been pro level but was decent. Now I’m old and I suck at it!
I had the off chance to play Immortal in I think some Colorado server back in 98 or so in the wee hours of the morning and it was my 15 minutes of fame. Haha. I think I hurt him once in the round.
@@stebrown7939 I never really liked maps with lava or acid. I would jump in that shit too often because I was jumping around like a monkey hitting flickrails. Q2DM1 was and still is the best map ever in my opinion :D

@@zogrush I think the ball track mouse is able to be swinged faster with varying sensitivity depending on the swing and the optical once just can't do that, maybe that's what it is.
Indeed. I still remember my old mice. I loved my pilot ps/2, but man those things were glitchy as hell. I hated cleaning those things out. Now the newer mice don't have the same tracking issues as before. I still remember my old microsoft intellimouse optical being a piece of crap at lower sensitivity.
Wasn't a huge fan of Q2 multiplayer. while it still had the movement speed, things like the weapon change speed, slow rockets, ladders, air movement etc made it far less intense than Q1. Enjoy watching Thresh though - he was so good at positional control.
Umm there wasn't anything better at the time. When q3 came out I remember staying on q2 for a long time because q2 was more tactical while q3 deathmatch was both physically and mentally draining. Our local lan clubs largely stayed on q2 and CS.
Honestly. A remake of Quake 2 where everything is the same but all the levels are connected as one big ass map for an "open world quake 2" would be sick. And honestly. Hunting each other an a huge quake 2 map with these nice corridors would be amazing fun. Then give the match up to 32vs32 battles.
id made a few 64 player maps back in the day, two of them were based off a couple of the single player units. Those would slap for 32v32 matches, or 16v16v16v16!
Plain vanilla q2 as far as I can tell. Just recorded at a decent resolution. (Edit: maybe not entirely, maybe effects like blood and explosions and rocket trails have had subtle upgrades)
@@Amadeus_Eisenberg You could be right, maybe explosions and rocket trails are a little upgraded too. It just looks pretty straightforward and true to the original overall and it’s been so long that I forget what it really looked like.
Watching this over 20 years later is just crazy. But man, times have changed and so did gameplay. This demo looks like it was shot in slo-mo. They barely used any trickjumps, simply walking instead of strafe jumping... I guess this evolved slowly to how we play today. Watching any demos shot by players like Q2David or Purri or Damiah makes me feel dizzy as they are fast paced and action packed while Tresh and Immortal presented more like "hold your position and walk instead of run" type of gameplay.
The art style reminds me of Half-Life, which is a good thing! Quake 1 was on some Lovecraftian dungeon crawling which is excellent too, Quake 2 was pure sci-fi.
Quake 2 done quick was my first FPS speedrun experiences. Holy shit i was like.. k there goes another year. This was.. i think AFTER "Rocket Olympics" omg who are these people will they marry me omg this mod omg omg we are all losing our minds here in lil ol STRAYA
played on a 233 mhz mmx, a 4mb video card joined via a cable to a diamond monster 12 mb card, 64mb of ram with a massive big foot 2 gb hard drive. A sound blaster, 3 button ball mouse and a 56k modem. gaming was good. .
sadly, quake 2 was slow even by 1997 standards, and it caused a huge playerbase split - many player were still on Q1 because it was faster and harder. their aiming speed, prediction and everything is on par with modern gaming, specially if you consider that they used ball mice which were around 200-300 modern DPI
I also did, but the resolutions kinda smoothed it out. Now go and try out 1200dpi with 1024x768.. 1600x1200 needed sensitivity to be aburdly high ingame for those twitch railgun shots on a standard desk.
I always used low-sense because I don't need 360 noscope. So modern non-gaming mouses with 800 dpi are crap for gaming. Good old ball mouse was okay, especially while increasing PS/2 port frequency up to 100Hz or 200Hz. Also I don't understand why you are saying that dpi are connected with rendering resolution... It is FOV that matters in 3D, not rendering resolution.

Andy For speed purposes. Obtaining map control is more important than trying to stealth it. The players quickly figure out positions of the enemy very easily, so sometimes, it doesn't matter. But that doesn't mean they don't stealth. It's a combination of both to maximize their efficiently and win the game.

I will tell you that you were much better when I played you, Thresh :) But this isn't your map anyways is it :) almmost 200+ health, with full armor and overshield - I will tell you that full chain gun ammo and a full backpack isn't enough to take all that away even if you hit the person with nearly every round!!! Don't forget the "hehe"
HUH!
These guys were legends. I remember Immy randomly walking into the office depot I worked at back in the day, I was star struck LMAO. So many good memories of this game.
They still are.
Legends never die.
I just get the urge to clean my mouse ball. XD
The other elephant in the room is the level of competition year in and year out that elevates the level of play, discovering glitches that result in enhanced gameplay (e.g. quake double jumps FIRST appeared in q2 point release 3.14 which revolutionized q2dm1 game, like doubling to mega, etc.)
Are you gonna tell me iC wasn't as skilled as a QW squad simply because iC was vq3?
I was on the same lan as one of the best Polish players ever to have played the game (HCK.Scooby) and I still claim that QW requires a shit ton more skill to master it.
classic, simple, to the point, fast fps action right here. Quake 2, TFC and StarCraft days were the best.
This demo cleaned up NICELY! Well done!
It's weird to see a cybersport demo older than you.
Still Playing This Shit :D
Played this before the millenium with everybody from brother to grandma (nobody could beat my 60yo grandmother back then she was insane). We still have it stashed somewhere with our old ps1 oldest design, I guess its time to challenge her and beat her this time!
see if you can find some demos of grandma!

KingLich yeah but good quality
just got remastered, lets go boys
I like how in in the first game the beginning of the match they are all stealthy and conserve ammo as much as possible, but near the end it just turns into a frag mess and a standard DM match.
they were clearly running outta time and just decided to settle things with the old ways
crazy af that in 2019 games are looking more and more like this, indie games of course, but the good shit never dies
I know this map so well.. Its like I lived another life.
it is a damn good duel map for q2 at least. not sure i'd wanna play a CPM or quakeworld duel on it though. maybe vq3 with osp. just like aerowalk is kind of an ass duel map on quake2 but its a great map on quakeworld and q3 cpm
LOL
Then you fire the blaster and go what the fuck this is retro reversal wtf day :D its just so weird. I couldn't do it hahaha i played a little just to see a bit more about how the fancy almost real, realtime, RT... damn thats a slick trick and not many bugs in those new full support games, even early on with RTX driver #2 or something. I was pretty impressed.
I never uninstalled it - it's still on my drive now.
Well, we got a remastered edition not so long ago. In a week it's going to be a year since it was released.

RUclips probably won't. Unless it gets freed from the slimy hands of Big Tech, because the war on Big Tech is gaining momentum.

I got a question, can someone explain me how to install the High-res skins and textures? I tried but I can make work. It would be very appreciated it.
What a great channel. Thanks for the uploads!

You are correct. Changed it in the description.
best q2 duel map :)
@@stebrown7939 I never really liked maps with lava or acid. I would jump in that shit too often because I was jumping around like a monkey hitting flickrails. Q2DM1 was and still is the best map ever in my opinion :D
I'm still amazed this map was used in tournaments. For a long time I had the idea that level hazards were a no-no in competitive ambients.
Let alone a map with a gimmick like this one!
Crazy when you consider the mice they were using were shite
i believe the old mice were better. The connection of the ball with the surface was way more easy to feel and swing and shoot with the rail gun imo.
@@kuramiian im not sure thats really true, or we would be using it for gaming still to this day?: but i must say they were not that bad they just had their own muscle memory
I didn't own a good 3D card back then so these graphics would have completely blown me away in 1998.
I still have my 8Mb Voodoo2
runs so smooth amazing
Does this guy still game?
Quake 2 Deathmatch was always intense.
What source port is this?
Anyone remember who the girl was that beat him with the dual-joystick setup?
Феррари в 16 - норм. Я только Celeron смог выиграть в Варик ^^ В США конечно условия будут получше ^^
Love Q2! It was a bit of a walk for Thresh. In the second map he had to shoot himself so he could pick up the RA!
That is very standard in all of Quake gaming.
How is the graphics so good? What kind of mod is this?
Plain vanilla q2 as far as I can tell. Just recorded at a decent resolution. (Edit: maybe not entirely, maybe effects like blood and explosions and rocket trails have had subtle upgrades)
@@matthewv789
Those blood effects upon getting hit are definitely not vanilla.
@@Amadeus_Eisenberg You could be right, maybe explosions and rocket trails are a little upgraded too. It just looks pretty straightforward and true to the original overall and it’s been so long that I forget what it really looked like.
guys, the graphix are from todays pc. it is demo file opened on moded Q2 and replayed on max ress. idk about RTX here, but might be.
Looks much better than vanilla Quake 2. What mod is it?
Quake 2 Vanilla
In the description of the video it mentions what he uses.
Watching this over 20 years later is just crazy. But man, times have changed and so did gameplay. This demo looks like it was shot in slo-mo. They barely used any trickjumps, simply walking instead of strafe jumping... I guess this evolved slowly to how we play today. Watching any demos shot by players like Q2David or Purri or Damiah makes me feel dizzy as they are fast paced and action packed while Tresh and Immortal presented more like "hold your position and walk instead of run" type of gameplay.
remember like today.. late 90s early 00s internet cafe and playing q1dm1 :D
Yep, Quake was a good game.
Thresh, that's gotta be one of the coolest gamertags ever
Amazing vid, good HD textures (tho I hate the HD textures pack you use for Q3/QL demos, I think the vanilla QL textures are way better).
wow what an upload :D
so oldskool
The art style reminds me of Half-Life, which is a good thing! Quake 1 was on some Lovecraftian dungeon crawling which is excellent too, Quake 2 was pure sci-fi.
Quake 2 done quick was my first FPS speedrun experiences.
Holy shit i was like.. k there goes another year. This was.. i think AFTER "Rocket Olympics" omg who are these people will they marry me omg this mod omg omg we are all losing our minds here in lil ol STRAYA

The railgun model that you are using is not inside the weapons pack you linked. Where did you get if from ?

not a big fan of this config. rail trail looks like smoke.
its horrible mate
Enjoy the vid instead lol, config is the least thing to worry about on this one. :> It's Thresh.
played on a 233 mhz mmx, a 4mb video card joined via a cable to a diamond monster 12 mb card, 64mb of ram with a massive big foot 2 gb hard drive. A sound blaster, 3 button ball mouse and a 56k modem. gaming was good. .
It's amazing how the gaming style had evolved, they move so slowly by today's standards.
sadly, quake 2 was slow even by 1997 standards, and it caused a huge playerbase split - many player were still on Q1 because it was faster and harder. their aiming speed, prediction and everything is on par with modern gaming, specially if you consider that they used ball mice which were around 200-300 modern DPI
No way. I used ball mice. It was very smooth.
It is FOV that matters in 3D, not rendering resolution.
honestly, I find most of todays games pretty slow when compared to the golden age of arena games between 1998-2004.
"where am i" what a badass moment. and that "there" shortly after
Can i use high res skins for single player too ? İs it work
Yes you can and you can even play multiplayer with them, if you don't use the high-res weapons .

Why jump and give away your position with the sound he makes?
Andy For speed purposes. Obtaining map control is more important than trying to stealth it. The players quickly figure out positions of the enemy very easily, so sometimes, it doesn't matter. But that doesn't mean they don't stealth. It's a combination of both to maximize their efficiently and win the game.
