i think ari did something really special with this one. i have yet to see it for the second time, but there are so many things that i want to take another look at. i feel very similar to how i felt after midsommar- some secret plot points are explicit shown and not made mention of, and it creates a very vivid picture outside of beau's point of view. almost like there is a mythos behind the story. i felt very sad once the titles hit, in a good way. a sense of loss, disgust, and a little wasted potential. not from a movie enjoyment perspective, but from a place of empathy for beau. it might be my new favorite movie of all time and i can't wait to watch it 100 times.
Even though Beau is Afraid is very different, the way Midsommar was different from Hereditary, I was surprised how the core of the movie started to feel eerily similar to both of them. Complicated family situations that are very unsettling and life altering except Beau is Afraid will lose people because it's not set in reality on the surface and preposterous things happen, but underneath the story being told is just as real and poignant as his other films.
Ari is a mad genius. He’s such an asset to the film industry, which is largely in decline. Hereditary is, like, the best movie I’ve ever seen. And I can’t wait for his next project.
absolute masterpiece of a film. can't see it enough times before it leaves theaters. one of the most beautiful expressions of self i have ever seen... unrestricted, honest, and humorous - in the way we laugh at beau, ari is laughing at himself, and that type of dynamic in a three hour indie film being released on a wide scale in 2023 is remarkable.
