@ROMANABSOLUT Yes, Romania has really produced wonderful, superb, outstanding artists: Virginia Zeani, Maria Slatinaru, Eugenia Moldoveanu, Hariclea Darclee (the first Tosca), Angela Gheorghiu, and a gorgeous mezzo (even contralto) Elena Cernei!
O my God! I am utterly and completely AMAZED! I am left speechless! Her technique is perfect, flawless, and she succeeded in portraying an innocent and vulnerable young girl. Her voice is UTTER PERFECTION, OUT OF THIS WORLD!
A stunning performance! Her voice, as always, has the most beautifully creamy and rich timbre, and her technique is flawless. Such quality, sadly, is not to be found anywhere nowadays
This is a lovely performance . She has the right vocal weight, the tempi are good, rubato is restrained and appropriate, very agile, secure top notes. Also an intelligent use of her voice. Final trill, alright. One of my favorite renditions.
WOW..This is PERFECTION...What a talented soprano Ms. Zeani is. I can´t continue typing.................. I am spechless. Viva Ms.Zeani " para siempre."
Wow!!! I had no idea how amazing she was when I worked with her many, many years ago. I wish I'd known who she was then, but alas, no youtube. I did a painting of her giving a class when I came home from the opera camp. Looking back, she was surprisingly patient with all of us. In the end I somehow overcame paralyzing stage gright and she paid me very high praise for my final performance. After hearing her it really means a lot. Thank you Virginia Zeani for coming to NY to work with us.
What a revelation, especially after hearing the Traviata excerpt on "100 Greatest Singers." Hers is the most spinto-ish voice I've heard in this aria, except for Leontyne Price, who was not really successful in it. Precise in coloratura (I can see now that she began as one), but full toned as well. Her trills are very good. Thanks for posting CharlotteinWeimar.
Romea Romeo, I agree!Exactly!! It's a perfect voice. It's almost beyond being human in that sense, yet, so much humanity! Listen again and again. There are no flaws. What is she ? A dramatic soprano with a coloratura top? You really can't classify it. her control is of another world.
Virginia Zeani and Maria Callas were both soprano assolutas, as they both could do everything from dramatic soprano roles to coloratura roles. The difference being that Callas wasn't careful with it, whereas Zeani was. Callas continuously switched back and forth which eventually contributed to her vocal demise. Zeani, on the other hand started with the more lyric and coloratura repertoire, and only added the heavier roles as her voice matured. This allowed her to keep her voice in shape throughout her long career.
Did you hear this great singer give a memorable performance live without a mic? If so please post an objective description to add to the wonderful RUclips archive before the memory is lost for ever. Recordings don't tell everything. Quality, size of voice, character, integrity, movement & the effect on an audience need describing too. How I wish I could have been there in 1734 to hear Farinelli stun an audience with a single note, but we do at least have Charles Burney's marvellous account.
@elegie84 You are so right. She began in her words as a "lyric soprano with high agility" & over a 35 year career developed into a spinto, singing such roles as AIda, Elisabetta in Don Carlo etc & even some Wagner. - a true "Assoluta"
Charlotte and other listeners, CLASSIC RECORD COLLECTOR has published two articles on Mme. Zeani this year. Thanks for sharing this enchanting "Caro nome." George
Exquisitely beautiful, in the true Verdian style. She may not have that upper 3rd above C, but she delivers in expressiveness and musicality, not to mention vocal perfection. "Une voix pleine de caresses."
@CharlotteinWeimar Great voice! That's what I can say :) And she was so young when she sang that aria - unbelievable because she had so cultivated voice in such young age!
@corellithebest : THANK YOU ! From a small Latin country in the middle of a Slavic sea, we still dare to "produce" talents. And we are proud about it ! I would also add the sopranos Cleopatra Melidoneanu, Ileana Cotrubaș, Felicia Filip, Irina Iordăchescu and Viorica Ursuleac. Unfortunately, the Westerners learn about them if they sing there only. I wonder myself, WHY do Romanians KNOW about the West's artists ? Are we more open to the culture or what ?
@elegie84 Many of us believe she is a very special and truly great singer. You will find numerous arias on my channel from private recordings made throughout her long career and they are without exception of the highest standard. At 84 she is still teaching and has just been honoured as Teacher of the Year.
Do you like Virginia Zeani (real name Zehan) ? Well, learn that she IS Romanian !! Yeah, that little country on the European map mostly unknown by 99 % of the Americans and unfairly blamed by most of the ignorant Western Europeans. Did you hear about soprano Angela Gheorghiu ? Well...she IS Romanian too. What about Dariclea Darclee ?! Yes, you got it, she WAS Romanian too. Another one ? Eugenia Nicolescu.
It's not about size ...size don't matter . Italy is not that bigger than Romania and it hold 80% of the world's artistic heritage. And it's like 0,70% of the world's size. And you're surprised about a couple of singers ? Get realistic :)
@@alvarodecampostabacaria4223 - Of course it's not about the size in this particular case. Before me, many, many people asked themselves WHY does Italy hold 80 % of the world's artistic heritage...and they found out that BEFORE and AFTER the Fall of Constantinople (May 29, 1453), the cultural inhabitants of the Byzantium migrated to...Italy. It was a Rinascimento, better known as Renaissance. @@ROMANABSOLUT thinking that Italy's renaissance happened thanks to migration is crazy. It's true that people were travelling to see Italy, but there wasn't any massive migration movement . @cptnunderwhere Actually Toscanini claimed ELIZABETH RETHBERG has having the most beautiful voice as was true of the MUSIC CLUBS of America. Suggest listening to Rethberg on You Tube. There has never been an Aida to match.
Never heard of her before five minutes ago. My loss.
My favourite caro nome

This has to be the BEST Gilda I have ever heard in my life. I love her.
Madame Zeani - Always musical, always moving the heart completely with her fantastic voice and style, and always holding the listener spellbound.
Amen to that.

Joe Tursi ..... is a Soprano Assoluta.is the type.
At long, long last a major article will be published in OPERA magazine in November 2009 entitled THE LEGENDARY VIRGINIA ZEANI.
Callas had a lot of health issues that contributed to her vocal decline as talked about in Phantoms of the opera
How is she here?
@NorthShoreCanary Thank you for sharing with all of us your pleasant experience with her! Yes, she is a truly great and kind, humble lady!

What a beautiful color of voice. I would bet she was a spinto soprano because she has so rich mid tones.

creamy beauty... gorgeous.
This is superior to all the sopranos singing presently
@mausetieger : the "Point" word IS in my comment !
And I notice that she doesn't use chest voice at all though she use it wirh babbino caro all the time, this aria has a much lower tessitura
voix magnifique précédée hélas par une pub pour un groupe musical dont le moins qu'on puisse dire c'est qu'il est nul !!!

So much more beautiful than Elisabetta.
She was not a spinto like Tebaldi.
she has a gorgeous sound, but occasionally sings flat.
Stunning!!!
