I got my UCG Max yesterday - great device overall, but I have 1 complaint. It runs very hot - 75C on idle with just Network enabled. One note to people that plan to get the no storage version - I got the upgraded 1TB version and what they sent me was actually the no storage version and the nvme was a separate package. The no storage version does not have the nvme tray - it just has a plug for the hole. The separate package with the drive actually has the tray with the drive, so if someone plans to add storage later has to buy it from Unifi or they will not be able to just plug in a drive in the device.
Reminds me of the unifi 8 port Poe switch I installed to power 5 Unifi LR AC access points for my friends church. Always ran hot stopped working just outside of the warranty but ubuqiti honored the warranty and sent a new one, sadly that switch ran hot also and made it about 3 years before dying. Had a Unfi 16 Port Poe switch still going today ran Luke warm at most
I concur. @salvatorefranco8356 That is the UDR that has the limit... And it actually 3 now I believe if you had one. It was increased from 2 to 3 with a software update...
I was waiting for you to make a video with your thoughts on this router! Thank you so much! I’ve been looking at this for my home to get started building out my home network 😁
The lack of poe ports is a complete miss in my eyes. One of these with two ap's is what i put in my parents house with a couple of cameras but having to use poe injectors makes the setup look messy and needs too many outlets so then your into poe switches but they dont make a small afordable 2.5g poe switch. The udr would have been ideal for them but they are never in stock and really need an update. Unifi express would have likely worked for them if it had a few poe ports.
I’m still hoping they come up with a replacement for the UDR. Because, you’re right, that was a great solution for very small deployments, especially since it had POE.
Yeah the Poe inbuilt is quite important in a small deployment for keeping it a clean install. An updated udr with 4 2.5g Poe ports and wifi 7 would be perfect. Then you can run the udr at one end of the building, put a second AP at the other side of the building then run 2-3 cameras. My parents and brother have zero hard wired devices in their houses so some cameras and wifi7 would be perfect to future proof them.
I consider buying this little piece of great network security. But there are still some questions I could not find an answer by now. My current setup is a Fritz!Box Router (wifi deactivated) with Netgear Orbi Mesh System (1 Router and two satellites) because I do not have LAN cables and ports all over my old house (1970s). Is there a chance to use this Netgear stuff in combination with this Unify gateway and manage it completely with it? Or do I definitely need Unify wireless access points? Which of them can be used to set up a Mesh wireless LAN system? Thank you very much for your answer👍‼️
Why don't you email me at tim@ethernetblueprint.com and I will try to answer that way. I have questions before I can help you out... (make sure to mention this comment)

And i fit the description you mentioned in video, a home business/prosumer I want to have unify protect (doorbell) and maybe 2 cameras (still havent figured if ubiquity or other) + going to get NAS (leaning to synology) + a couple AP I thought i had to get udm pro/se + poe switch but looks like can get this gateway max + poe switch Looking forward to your next set videos to flesh this out some more , thanks for the update
You definately don't need the SE. This guy should handle what you mentioned just fine. I think you would like Unifi cameras. They are a good mix of quality and price and mine have been trouble free ever since I have owned them. I just upgraded but my old ones were still working fine!
@@ethernetblueprint thank you for replying and confirming what I understood. starting from scratch on home Networking knowledge and your videos and a few others have been everything for me and it's been fun and daunting at the same time. Thanks for the reply. To answer the question you asked, I don't know there is a reason for the RPS in a home. I typically use a UPS in my home for that. I do have a video on what I use and show how I got it online and monitor it... but its not part of the series...
I hear you... I guess those are sacrifices on the "mini UDM Pro" devices... I'm betting that you can get a rack mount 3D printed...someone will design one at some point...
I have a 2g fiber link so this leaves performance on the table. Maybe with intrusion disabled it could do the 2g? Anyway just bought a udm-se, plus a pro max 16 Poe. Plan to do a dual WAN with 2g fiber main, with 300mbps cable backup.
What's the advantage of getting the Cloud Gateway Max with 2TB included instead of buying one with no storage then inserting your own 2TB stick afterward? I am seeing prices of 2TB for only $100. That would save me $179. Is Ubiquiti's 2TB a premium quality or something?
I haven't priced this out myself, but I do know you have to buy the sled that the storage goes into as well on the "no storage" version... so make sure you work that into your numbers... Savings is savings in my book!
Hi there. my current set up as follows... 10gbe speed internet /3rd party router with 3x2.5gbps lan ports and 1x10gbps lan port/ Ubiguiti's uckgen2+,switches,APs and cams. 1.Can I use this UCG max router connected directly to the ONT 10gbe? or 2.will it work if the UCG Max router is connected to the 3rd party router 2.5 gbps lan port?
So you have 10Gb internet? This device will not handle that speed and max's out at the 2.5Gb link speed. You could connect this device to your 3rd party router's 2.5Gb LAN port and it would work, yes. If you want to utilize that 10Gb link, you would want to look at the UDM Pro, SE or Pro Max routers which do have 10Gb links on them.
@@ethernetblueprint Hihi thank you for the prompt response! Fyi with my current set up, ie from the 3rd party router 10gbps lan port out to the unify switch, wifi was stable initially until like recently very unstable. So I switched to using the 2.5Gbps lan port from the 3rd party router and is working fine now. I am just wondering, was the issue of the initial 10gbe connection resulted in some bottleneck due to the switch port unable to handle 10gbps? If I upgrade to a udm or a switch that can handle 10gbps, would it solve the issue?
Sorry for the delay... getting caught up on some of my older comments.... A lot of the time, network equipment does like to to have the port speed between devices match (10Gb port ---> 10Gb port)... So if you were plugging from a 10Gb port, to a 2.5Gb port, there could have been something with that mismatch making it unstable. The UDM Pro, SE or Pro Max all have 10Gb WAN ports and "may" solve this issue. But they do cost a bit more, so I'd make sure you have a reason to make the jump. Unless money isn't really a factor...
I really would like to see a version of Cloud Gateway Max SE WiFi, with PoE and WiFi Build in. It can be selling at £500 and I will still willing to paid for it. But, I believe only PoE will be possible in the future version?
Thanks for the video. I am new to ubiquity. I got the 1TB version of this. Will that store the recordings from future cameras or will I need a separate device?
Cloud gateway max is the in case of an emergency break glass gateway for UDM owners. Or it's the one you get your parents because you manage their network.
Wish they did an Express sized WiFI Access point ONLY without all the gateway stuff to marry with this. Yes, you can get one of the round ones but it looks better if all the devices look the same. Yes, you can run the Express in Access point only mode, but I better it would be cheaper if it was just an Access Point out the box.
Well the Unifi Express devices can be setup as APs with this device and you can turn off the gateway features - just in case you weren't aware of that. The U6 Mesh/FlexHD is also a table top model of AP.
They have the U7 Pro Wall, it even has a table stand as official accessory. i have also seen people placing the U6 In Wall on a phone holder instead of mounting it on the wall
Thanks for the comment. I have been asked this multiple times... I am waiting until I get fiber to my home so I don't have triple NAT happening... but yes, I plan on doing some VPN videos....
Not many of the APs come with injectors anymore. So, it depends on the model you get. And I agree with you on the 10Gb networking however, there are MANY who would disagree with us.

If your netgear router has the ability to be put in AP mode, then you could connect it to one of the LAN ports and use it for WiFi. However Unifi works with Unifi products very well. In this scenario, you would have to program both of them individually and troubleshooting problems could be tricky.

Its just a shame that it doesn't have 2 POE. I think for home users 1gb is enough for 1 device per port. The 2.5 gb really shines when with a u7 ap at 2.5 which might have 5+ devices sharing the band width allowing devices to not be bottle necked by a single 1gb port.
