Much respect for Don Meredith. He struggled more than I realized. Definitely “good people”. Rest In Peace
I don't care what anyone says!! Don Meredith was a champion in football & in life!! REST IN PEACE!! BIG GUY!!
agree he deserved better than he got
I'm a Dallas Boy. I love my Cowboys. Don Meredith and Bob Hayes were my childhood heroes
He never won the big game but by God he was a winner in the game of life. RIP Dandy Don!

Agreed.👍👍🏈
@Greg Hubbard
Well, since I saw the man play, I obviously know better.
Evidently, Greg Hubbard is just another jealous fan that happened to find happiness in the homosexual community.
Go Packers!
I'm a die hard Steelers fan for nearly 50 years but I cannot deny you named "half" of the only Cowboy players I was actually a fan of, the other two being Tony Dorsett and Emmitt Smith.

A VERY underrated QB. He was tougher than a $2.00 steak and a great leader.
I watched Don Meredith play. He was my first sports hero, and the reason I became a Dallas Cowboys fan. For me, it was a sad day when he retired. Thank you for all the great childhood memories I have, because of you. RIP Don.

Same here, buddy.
My same exact sentiments.
#17 of the Dallas Cowboys was my very first sports hero.🏈
Don Meredith was a hero for the Dallas cowboys. He was the reason for creating Americas Team under Tom Landry era.
"It's close to home and it's easy to spell." Classic Don Meredith.
LMAO! Best line ever!
@@thegorn68 Check out some John McKay quotes. Sample: "We didn't tackle well today, but we made up for it by not blocking." John McKay was the king of quotes.
@Harry Engel McKay was another one. When asked about the high number of carries they gave O.J. Simpson he replied, "The ball isn't that heavy and he doesn't belong to a union."

After all these years, Dandy Don is still my favorite Dallas QB of all time.
You know you got it going on when your FORMER wife says good things about you.
Decadant Dog I wonder what went wrong. She seems like such a lovely and gracious person.
The former wife was probably traded in for a younger model , like you trade an old car .

@Willie Gordon he's dead now
I never knew anything about Dandy Don's former wife but what a great character she has, both of them!
When this vid says Meredith was the Cowboys first Quarterback, its misleading. First QB signed, yes. But the Cowboys first primary starting QB was Eddie LeBaron. And Eddie LeBaron was no slouch. LeBaron is one of the great overachieving QB's in NFL history. The diminutive LeBaron was only 5'7" tall, drafted out of small college in the 10th round in 1950 by the Redskins. But before coming into the league he had to fight first in the Korean War, wounded twice and earning a Purple Heart & a Bronze Star! Coming into the NFL in '52, against the odds LeBaron became a 3-time Pro Bowler in Washington & one more with the Cowboys. LeBaron was the primary starter for Dallas for 1960 & 1961 before eventually giving way to Meredith later on.
David C. Pangburn Absolutely correct, and Eddie LeBaron was no slouch. I think he was a 4-time Pro Bowler, Rookie of the Year. Doesn’t matter, just(!) one more great Cowboy quarterback.
Glad someone knows football like me Eddie was a war hero. But forgotten too Quickly
He was a tuff cus!
I came here to give the same comment. While people think of the great Don Meredith they forget Eddie LeBarron who was the Doug Flutie of his time, but better. Though I watched Eddie play I was very young and barely remember him on TV. I mostly think of Don Meredith. But without a QB like LeBarron the possible success and survival of the Cowboys might have failed or been delayed. Imagine being that small a QB with a brand new team of castoffs from other teams. Eddie did pretty well to get a Pro Bowl right? Let's also not forget running back Don Perkins. Darn good runner.
You reminded me of the other great diminutive QB, Fran Tarkenton.

Turn on the lights" We remember a Cowboy legend. Don Meredith was good on the field and in the booth. He led the Cowboys to two Championship playoffs back to back. Though they did not win, He made the Cowboys a winning team. Meredith was Ambitious, a Great Achiever who focused on success. A star never loses its shine, He was a rising star to Fame. #17 had his moment in the spotlight and he was a born winner.
Not a cowboy fan but I love anything that's cowboys in the landry era. Although I'll watch any of these documentary type things on any team from 60s-80s
@Rowdy Jr. Jerry's Cowboys, you mean
Don Meredithw was one of the best for NFL being what it is today. He was great at everything he did. We all love you always.
I was at a convention in Hilton Head and Meredith was one of the celebrities there, as always I was donning my Browns gear and in an elevator Meredith introduced himself calling me "Cleveland" for the rest of the event. Everywhere he saw me he called out "Hey Cleveland" ....

Meredith paved the way for all Cowboy QB's to come along. A true pioneer and trailblazer. Great player...TOUGH, Strong player and a winning heart. Great video upload...Blast from the past"
I get all choked up when I hear Terry Bradshaw dedicate and sing Turn off the lights the party is over. Terry sings it perfect the way Dandy Don use to. Coming from the QB that shredded the Cowboys in two Super Bowls it’s just beautiful.
I will always remember being a kid in Dallas during those days. One day “Dandy Don” was a hero and the next a goat. I remember the pain, to this day, of those losses to Green Bay. #17 always took the good with the bad and always lifted his team, fans and the city, with his character and grit. I remember a radio station having a quiz one time. The question was; “who are the three quarterbacks of the Dallas Cowboys? I new the first one and looked to my dad for the other two. Dad said “Meredith, Morton and Rhome”. That’s when I started loving the home town boys!! Great memories!
The good old days of football
3 minutes in and I'm thrilled this was posted. My first experience with Dandy Don was watching the first couple of seasons of MNF as a young kid in Seattle. Never saw him play a game but he is the essence of football in my childhood because of his presence on MNF with Howard Cosell.
The instant I saw this video come up I could hear his voice clear as day.
Agreed..... He had a unique voice which was smooth and easy to listen to as well.
The chemistry of the MNF crew was fabulous.
In the mid seventies Dandy Don was away from MNF, replaced by Alex Karras. Don came back in '77.
Wow, it had never occurred to me that Don Meredith, a man so outrageously talented and successful (from my point of view growing up in the 70s and 80s), was even capable of knowing what it is to be disappointed.
I once read the Cowboys were coming back from New York and their plane developed engine trouble while in the air and everyone on board were screaming and shouting the plane's is going to crash and scared too death. And the player sitting next to Don asked him "What are you thinking about Don?" Don sitting and calmly answered " Aw, it's been a good'un!" and he keep on sipping his scotch. Damn!!!
Lmaooooooo you know you’re mentally tough when you can chill and sip scotch during a moment like that.

Rest easy, Don. You should be in the HOF.
He never led the league in anything, except twice leading the league in yards per completion. (Thanks, Bullet.)
This is where supporters start mumbling things about intangibles, and other psycho-babble.
@@sludge4125 Quit whining. The man belongs in The Hall for his years in the broadcast booth alone. Without Meredith, there would have been no Monday Night Football. He made it work, helping to break up the drone of Cosell.
@@edwardyoung522 Exactly. It's not just what he did to put the Cowboys on the map, but what he did to put Monday Night Football on the map. MNF is a major reason why the NFL became so enormously popular in the 1970s. To understand just how important he was to MNF, all one has to do is watch one of the games from the mid-70s era -- when Alex Karras was the third man in the booth instead of Don. The magic just wasn't there. Karras didn't have even one-percent of the charm and charisma Don did. But when Don returned in 1977, so did the magic.

Dandy Don is what made MNF enjoyable when I was growing up. Turn out the lights the party's over. I always loved when he sang that at the end of the game.
What a great character! I only saw his last couple years on the field, but his MNF stint was awesome! Humor, with great game knowledge, and he played off Howard and Frank so well.
Heh... amazing how well the singer Mac Davis nailed his character in the movie North Dallas Forty!
Nick Nolte nailed Peter Gent also.

Total class act.
Watching this piece on Don Meredith, he seemed to be a fun loving guy, who enjoyed football more than most. His relationship with Tom Landry looks almost identical to the relationship between Terry Bradshaw and Chuck Noll. One fun loving, gregarious player and the tough, disciplinarian coach who butted heads with the captain of the team.

I am actually a Meredith and an certain I am related to this wonderful man. Alot of my male Meredith cousins and one of my dad's brothers resembles/resembled Don in many ways. My daddy always told me we were related but I couldn't ever find any definite proof (outside of the looks). My daddy even shared Don's philosophy on how they wanted to be remembered... as a great person, and they both are. RIP to both remarkable Meredith men.
Don Meredith reminds me of Mel Gibson and I think Dandy Don would have made a Dandy Braveheart!
@@joseph4185 hahahahahaha I was about to say that he looked like Mel Gibson. I know Mel is Australian and the resemble is just coincidence of course.
Bur it is not only the the resemble is also the personality. Here in México there were fans of NFL since that time I mean I was not born until 1970 but older people said they were fans of Dallas Cowboys and in the eighties when I was a teen many fans hoped to watch Dallas in the super bowl again.
I used to buy a magazine in spanish of american football and the journalist s mentioned Don Meredith as a legend. The only videos we could see about sixties were before and during the games but only snippets of them because Mexico is a third world country and they needed sponsors during the broadcasting and we always kept with the feelings of getting more of them. What a personality had this man no wonder many people missed him and about the resemble I mentioned before is because I hadnt noted it related with Mel Gibson.
@@joseph4185 Personally, I don't think that's a positive comparison, that bestows anything meritorious on Meredith, whatsoever. Despite his work, in front of and behind the camera, Gibson isn't exactly the kind of personality I think many people would want to be associated with, IMHO.

Meredith got no love in Dallas because he could not win the big one, Dallas fans and coach Landry did not realize just how great he was.
And there's not a lot of shame to losing twice to one of the best teams in NFL history-and coming close to winning. And, by the way, Lombardi was a better coach than Landry, which might explain the losses.
@Harry Engel Yes, that was a cheap shot on my part. Dallas would almost certainly have won the 1967 game if it hadn't been played in Arctic conditions.
The one criticism I had about Landry (RIP) is that he should have realized the leader he had in Don. Not a lot of people in this life would follow you into hell but Don's teammates would have in a heartbeat. Not so much with Morton. When they lost the 69 division playoff to Cleveland they finally realized Meredith was not the problem. He would have killed the Colts on V.

love Don, I used closed caption did he imply that leaders are lonely , and none leaders are lonely too .
Loved the Cowboys back then
The fact that he got that pass away in that last play of the 66 championship game is a feat in itself
If Leon Donahue #62 could have blocked Robinson there, who knows what would have happened.
Oh, well.🏈😊👍
That last play Bob Hayes should not have been in the game. Coach Landry substituted Hayes for Frank Clark. Clark always played on the goal line. On that play Clark blocks the end (Robinson) and holds the block for 2 seconds and then releases. That gives Leon Donahue a chance to get around and protect Don. Don then either flips the ball to Clark or runs it in himself. That 's the thing about Landry. He never took responsibility for anything. He left Don out to dry. He did the same thing to Don in Cleveland. Blanton Collier knew Landry's game plan better than Landry did.
@@RJC96cj ALSO HE LEFT MORTON STAY IN COLTS SUPER BOWL EITHER GAME WAS RIGGED OR LANDRY WAS SO DUMB MORTON SUCKED TO MAX AND WAS INJURED COLTS KNEW HE COULD NOT THROW COLTS DB'S COULD NOT COVER HAYES AND LANDRY THREW ONE ! @@helpisontheway9405, They almost certainly would have won regardless, if the refs hadn't jobbed them on the fumble by Thomas at the beginning of the 3rd quarter.
