The standard model has only a thin rubber pad, but the Supreme model has a conventional recoil pad plus screw in changeable chokes. (A good $75 addition) I am saving up to send mine out to Texas to have a Hydraulic recoil system installed into the stock even though I have the Supreme model. That reduces it to 20ga level recoil. But it is expensive!
Buy the 12 ga. Then get 20 ga adapters. Lower recoil with the ability to use 2 gauges. Short lane co. makes rifle and pistol caliber adapters too. A break open 12 ga is the most versatile you can get. You can even reload empty shells with black powder. Make cut shells, wax slugs. The old “if I could only have one gun” debate, double barrel coach gun ie; stoeger 12 ga supreme. With changeable choke tube it can be useful for hunting, just use tighter chokes for more distance. Just my .02
We bought a $20 recoil pad at walmart (IIRC the brand name 'limb saver'?)...it has made a tremendous difference in shooting the gun...well, I just looked, the limbsaver now advertised for $24.56, but it is money well spent...
Kick like a mule? More like an Angry Mule!!! Shot mine for the 1st time yesterday... but it's a good pain.

Lengthening chamber forcing cones will reduce recoil & improve pattern density.
Seems the coyote won't be a problem.
Woose !
I just picked up a over under 12 gauge, 3 inch chamber with a 9.5 inch barrel.. I feel the shoulder pain you’re talking about
