    You don't buy a Delorean for performance, you buy it purely for looks and because if you manage to hit 88mph, you're gonna see some serious shit.

    • @TwinPeaksIndustries
      @TwinPeaksIndustries 8 лет назад +1

      Well, they did market it as a sports car back then, which would imply higher performance than it actually has.

      Many Deloreans sold in Europe ran perfectly fine. it was those sent to the US that suffered due to a regulator system installed in the car that hampered its performance. As of today most Deloreans on the road are no longer hampered by this system and run quite well

      It's too bad- the power train was decent, handling ok.. as you pointed out, Ford balanced thier bottom line against the charred corpses of thier Pinto buyers. Truly unforgivable- yet it seems every manufacturer does this at some point. GM- ignition switches. Takata airbags. Corvair rear suspension. Every electric car made with highly flammable/ explosive lithium ion batteries that can instantly shoot out 2000' jets of fire opon rupture or shorting out.

    Back in the 70's, my dad bought and East German with probably the worst name I have ever heard for a car, the Wartburg! It's failings didn't end there however. This monstrosity of a car (ours was a horrible mustard/beige colour), had a 3 cylinder two-stroke engine, which meant that whenever you filled it up, you had to buy a bottle of 2-stroke oil and pour that into the tank too. As you can imagine, the exhaust from this thing was toxic, and I believe that was what eventually stopped the UK government from allowing them to be imported. The interior was plastic throughout and barely fitted together. The most alarming thing about this car, which had a manual (stick shift) gearbox, was the inclusion of free-wheeling like a pushbike. This meant that, going downhill the engine had no braking effect at all. If the wheels were going faster than the engine, the drive chain was disengaged until you slowed to a speed where the engine caught up with the wheels. Living in a fairly hilly area, it was terrifying freewheeling down a steep, windy, hill reliant on only the Wartburg's fairly poor footbrake. Fortunately, the build quality was so poor that the bodywork dissolved to rust within just a few years and, much to my relief, my dad bought a crappy little Nissan which by comparison was a limo!

      Christian Dietrich besides, there are a lot of awesome cars that are slow, have crap handling, or are mechanically fucked from the factory, but that just kinda adds to their weird, quirky awesomeness. I love my current car, even though the transmission detonates every time you look at it funny.

    • @silverwings11035
      @silverwings11035 8 лет назад +1

      Acura TL GTLM The DeLorean actually did handle very well for its set up, initially that is. At first the car was supposed to be lowered but then someone said they dont meet U.S. bumper height standards so they had to use a taller front spring which though off the handling. I lowered my DeLorean using stainless lower control arm, stainless rear radius arms. QA1 adjustable coilover with 10 way dampeners and poly bushings and changed the brakes from solid to drilled and slotted units with 4 piston calipers by Wilwood. Now its even better than originally it was going to be. I love that goofy ass car! I have tons of fun in it! Bow for it being junk? Those are people that actually dont know nothing about the car or ever driven one.

      why is a reliant robin among your favorite? they look ugly! they move slower than a bike, they are anything but reliant, and they flip over. the delorean is understandable, it looks cool and was pretty quick off of the line (what watchmojo said about it doesn't sound right) and was a symbol of a greater time. when the world had finally boiled down in a ceasefire and everybody's biggest problem was what soda they were going to drink and then they would party all night long.

Look at the video of the thing, water just inches below the gunwales. that is scary.

      I agree. Mike Brewer and Edd China of the Wheeler Dealers television show bought and worked on one and loved it. Richard Rawlings of Fast and Loud also bought a rough one and sold it to a guy who already had one in top condition. They then took the one in top condition and went boating on Richard's restaurant lake! Richard loved it! So the Amphicar didn't go very well on the road and in water. I say so what? As long as you enjoy them. My 1964 British Ford Corsair didn't go very well but i still enjoyed owning and driving it. It looked a bit like a smaller version of a '64 Ford Thunderbird. Heck, my '71 Dodge Charger didn't go very well either due to a carburettor problem that I never bothered fixing but I still enjoyed it! In fact, that car was probably the best car AND the worst car that I've ever owned! The best cos it looked and sounded so good with its 360 cu in V8 engine and every drive in it was an adventure and it always got a crowd round it and also the worst because it kept falling apart! Mike, Edd and Richard like the Amphicar and so do I!

    • @Vincent_Sullivan
      @Vincent_Sullivan 5 лет назад +4

      Obviously JPK you are not a car person either. With respect to timing belts and camshafts/valves engines come in 2 types: Interference and non-interference. In a non interference engine if the timing belt breaks the cam and valves can be in any position and the valves will not contact the pistons. In this case there is no damage so all you do is install a new timing belt and start up the engine. I have personally done this with my own 2 hands on a 1986 Toyota Corolla GTS AE86 with 4AGEC engine. Engine ran fine afterwards. Now, if the engine is of the interference type and the timing belt breaks then severe engine damage is likely (though not certain) and a major inspection and rebuild may be in order.

    OK, here's a joke:
    A man goes to hell, and finds an old friend from high school.
    He asks, “What are you doing here?!”.
    “I was on my way home after an extra-tiring day at work, when some jerkoff cut in front of me and started driving at a snail’s pace. When I sounded the horn, he just flipped me the bird. Then I unrolled my window and called him an asshole, and we pulled over. We got into a heated argument, and in a fit of rage I started kicking his back bumper.”
    He pauses for a few seconds.
    “I forgot he was driving a Pinto”.

The aluminum block 2.3L inline four was absolutely horrible. I had one in a '77 Chevy Monza. No power, block prone to warping and cracking. Also, the Chrysler K cars from the '80s should have made this list.

      Top gear rated it as worst car all things considered when someone bought it new. It was expensive and not very good looking, handling or performing compared to it's rivals in europe at the time. They described it as a car only an American would buy as it was aimed clearly at that market. Second hand it may be good value though as it's a large hard top convertable which makes it more practical then a regular one.

      Daewoo used to be owned by the Kim family and a large number of shareholders through pension funds etc. Daewoo was a chaebol, think of it as a Korean version of Japanese keiretsus except they have large family shareholdings. Anyway, Daewoo totally misread the 1997 Asian financial crisis and try to leverage their way out; it failed and they went bankrupt. GM bought Daewoo's car manufacturing business, and over time discontinued the Daewoo brand in favour of Chevrolet. The Korean manufacturing aspects of the business have since been sold to Tata (India manufacturing conglomerate).

    My first car was a 77 Chevy Vega Hatchback, puke brown. Admittedly I got it used (as in Rode Hard and put away Wet) but still it was a nightmare. There were only two good things about that car, it got great gas-mileage (when it ran) and it was absolutely guaranteed never to get stolen! I even tested that out once, one night I parked the car on the street (not a good street). left the keys in the ignition, the door cracked open, and a sign on the roof saying "Steal Me!". Next morning I came out and sure enough, somebody stole the sign.

      Nice looking car, but why build it with a slow Renault engine, how sad! Then to make it with a body, that body shops could not repair, and one that if you touched it, left finger prints, just was not well thought out. However in top ten worst, not sure it deserved that, but yes, not much of a car!

    Speaking of Yugo...I love how they had what amounted to two big white fog lights on the back of the car...I guess to be able to back up in a blizzard...also...I remember living in Los Angeles back in the 1990's , and when the end was near for the Yugo, one dealer started offering the most desperate incentive I've ever heard of to get rid of their remaining inventory..."Buy one Yugo at the regular price ( $4,000 ) , and get a second Yugo FREE ! "

      They are slow and heavy, but I can name slow and heavy "sports" cars that are more expensive and waaay uglier, it has no business being on this list.

      Rumor has it that all the times Marty tried to crank the Delorean and it wouldn't turn over, they weren't scripted. It really wouldn't start.

    test drove a Yugo in 84..interior panels would pop loose at random. oh..? someone on mojo watched 60 minutes about pinto issues? because those of us who lived the era knew pintos as utterly dependable workhorses! loved them! the snazziest cars in family..big bro had yellow sporter..Mom had gorgeous red station wagon Pinto. they'd get banged around on roads..yanked outa snow banks and always ran!
