I apologize for not making this clear in my video. My dear friend, whom I considered a sister when I knew her, and is still a true sister in Christ, passed on a couple years ago. I appreciate the condolences, and love you all dearly for them, but I'm OK and her family is too. This tree being cut down by the electric company was a shame, but also a gift... because now I get to make some very special treasures for her loved ones. God Bless and Semper Fidelis!
May this (and other?) Bowls be a special comfort to her family. Indeed John 3:16 is why we have a hope of seeing our Savior, as well as our loved ones we have sent ahead.
Listening to you woodturning calms the fettered nerves. I find turning to be a great time to pray & listen to God. Imagine this: your bowls are God’s answers. Our roll is total obedience. Complete surrender sweetens the world around us. Love God & love all who’s are in our realm of influence.
Something about your videos makes me feel happiness, which doesn't come easily to me. I can't place what it is exactly. I guess knowing that wholesome, down to earth people like you exist just makes me feel good. Seeing the transformation of these chunks of wood becoming beautiful things really warms my heart. Nature is so precious and has so much to offer.
Your thoughtful respect and remembrance speaks not just highly of your friend, but of your own faith, humility, and abiding love as well. The live edge bowl looks great....let dry slowly (paper bags). Best wishes.
Good morning Rod, We are one week since Resurrection Day. Resurrection Day was, is, and will always be the most important day in history. For believers in JESUS CHRIST, it gives us the blessed assurance of a glorious reunion around the Throne of the LAMB. We mourn but not like the world mourns because of that blessed assurance.
My sincere condolences for your loss Rod. It is never easy. I send you tons of love and energy for the upcoming and needed grieving time. That bowl is beautiful and will hold precious treasures and moments of memories with and of your friend. Semper Fi. Please stay safe and take care.
Thanks for the tip of the hat Rod and as per usual you are inspiring. Yep it was 6 in the morning when I got a notification to watch your video. I will have mosquito nightmares tonight.
Beautiful bowl for a dear friend's family! I was quite excited to watch your video on our TV with my family to show off your skill and my bowl! Thanks so much for showing it!
Good morning. The loss of a friend is never easy. It slows me down as I reflect on their life and how they impacted mine. I appreciate your video. God bless. Semper Fidelis
Rod, beautiful turning!! Can't wait to see it all dried and finished. Sorry for the loss of your friend. The electric company did the same here, too. They cut down some nice cherry, Tom got some of it. Now for him to make something with it.
this is so beautiful, and the idea of a tree she planted and now must be cut , then turned into beautiful, useful bowls for her loved ones is truly a tribute ever lasting
I ready do like the natural edged bowl. I noticed that the shavings were different to the shavings of dry wood. I’m learning so much about wood. It’s great.
I learned something from this video. I didn't know that turning the walls extra thin would help minimize cracking. Thanks Rod. I usually learn something from you.
Thank you Dave. It had a lot to do with the evenness of the sides and base, as well as the wood being clear of knots and pith... I did leave the pith in this one but it's so tiny, I had a strong feeling it wouldn't be an issue. I'll show this bowl again, and talk about the results, and go more in depth about my thoughts and experience with green turning.
Wow I can't believe you put out this Video. We planted a tree when my Father-in-law Died and a recent storm blew it down. I need to do exactly what you are doing. My bandsaw is to small to use a circle jig so I will have a hard time balancing it out. As always Thanks Tim
It's a beautiful thing that you and those that use the pieces you produce from that tree, continue to enjoy something touched by such a dear friend. Maybe now, you could plant another Silver Maple in her loving memory, also to be enjoyed for years to come, and who knows, maybe decades from now, someone will be turning your legacy into a beautiful bowl. I'm not a Marine, and don't feel I have earned the right to return the greeting "Semper Fi", my brother is a Canadian Naval Officer though and I have the utmost respect for all service people. So, in response to your Semper Fi, I will say Thank You from the bottom of my heart, for your service!
Nice bowl Rod. You have enough tree left to make a whole set of them. I hope the bowl lives up to your anticipation and does not crack. It will be interesting to see how much it distorts when drying. Thank you for sharing and have a great day.
Thank you, Glen! I have more that was shown too. I plan to do a bit of band saw milling to make some boards and other sized chunks. I'll show this one again in a couple weeks.
Maybe make a small vase to put flowers in,in her memory. Flowers always make me smile though I don’t like to cut them, contrary I know but you get my drift. This is beautiful as always

I have turned a lot of silver maple wet to thin as you just have and had none crack. It's great wood to turn but not a lot of beauty unless you can get into some with character. Now, cherry is another story and have had many crack even after a year beyond finishing them . When I started I always turned wet to finish because I had no patience to put them away for drying. lol Once a friend always a friend. Cheers, Lee
I love Perth! I spent about a month there, dockside at Fremantle when in the Marines. Some of the friendliest people in the world! I have a good mate there. Thanks very much!
Thank you Rod for another interesting video. I must confess that I haven't taken much interest in wet turning but just this past week a friend dropped me off a section of freshly cut apple and another left me some holly. Both are very heavy as they are filled with sap so this gives me the opportunity to try wet turning. Semper Fi Alan.
I love the beauty and honesty of live edge bowls. This one will hold treasured memories of your friend, whatever else you may put in it. Best wishes from the UK.
I'll waste as little as possible. I have other limbs I will be resawing into dimensional lumber too. I'll make as much as I can in her memory, for her family to enjoy. Pens, bowls, scoops, etc... Thank you!
I've been there too. Some days my coffee maker waves a white flag and cries for mercy. It sounds like you're having just that kind of day yourself. I'm glad you were able to honor your friend.
Morning Rod Like That natural Edge on the bowl. I have put bowls in wood chips before and all they get is a moldy Bowl I started using a 20lb bag of rice and it dries perfect without cracking tends to dry the wet out more evenly and slowly. Semper Fi
Good morning, Tom. I've heard of doing that, but have yet to give it a try... I'm just going to open air dry it in the house. Should only take a couple weeks. Semper Fi
I'm sorry you lost your friend...good ones are hard to come by...the bowl is a nice remembrance...absent from the body present with the Lord...stay safe...press on 😎 Joe
Empathy. I lost count of the times I had trouble twisting the whatchamacallit into a thingamalog. Love turning green, easy on the tools, and I often get a sap showrd to keep me cool, lol.

I loved what happened next.
LOL 😁 thank you!
Irene would have loved the bowl. It was nice to honor her this way! Love the bowl and I’m sure it will always be cherished! 🌹 g

Great wake up. 😁 Love your dowel method. Makes so much sense. 😁 Thank you for sharing. 😊
I really liked the sped up log cutting for some reason haha
Its very funny sound x) like an annoying fly hanging around
Great video Rod, I am sure your friend will be looking down with a huge smile after seeing what you did with the tree 👍👍👍
Beautiful legacy piece. I understand the prejudice against them taking the tree down, but I'm very glad you got to claim the wood!
Another nice piece of turning and my God continue to bless you in your turning,
Thanks for the tip of the hat Rod and as per usual you are inspiring. Yep it was 6 in the morning when I got a notification to watch your video. I will have mosquito nightmares tonight.

Hi Rod it is just awesome I love it when wet wood is turned then you get these long strings of wood flying around.
Hi Kobie, it's a lot of fun! Green wood is so tender...
I learned something from this video. I didn't know that turning the walls extra thin would help minimize cracking. Thanks Rod. I usually learn something from you.

Amazing job on this one!
Lesson learned: When things don't shape up the way you want, grab the chainsaw.
Beautiful bowl. I love live edge work like that.
haha! Grabbing the chainsaw always feels right somehow... Thank you!
Nice bowl Rod. You have enough tree left to make a whole set of them. I hope the bowl lives up to your anticipation and does not crack. It will be interesting to see how much it distorts when drying. Thank you for sharing and have a great day.

Nice work!!
Awesome job
Thank you! Cheers!
A chainsaw is music to a turner’s ear, like a moth drawn to a light. Looking forward to the finished project.
Well said! I'll show it in a couple weeks

Beautiful as always! I’m sure you’ll make sure the remainder timber becomes pen blanks, tea coasters and mini bowls... no waste right! Lovely grain.
I'll waste as little as possible. I have other limbs I will be resawing into dimensional lumber too. I'll make as much as I can in her memory, for her family to enjoy. Pens, bowls, scoops, etc... Thank you!
At 6 in the morning? And one handed yet? What a guy.
lol, thank you, Stuart!
I've been there too. Some days my coffee maker waves a white flag and cries for mercy. It sounds like you're having just that kind of day yourself.
I'm glad you were able to honor your friend.
I would love to see a video on your sharpening process for that 3/4" gouge at 55 degrees.
Wow!!! It is EXACTLY 6 am.... Just laying down after a 12 hour shift at work. Funny how those things happen.
Morning Rod Like That natural Edge on the bowl. I have put bowls in wood chips before and all they get is a moldy Bowl I started using a 20lb bag of rice and it dries perfect without cracking tends to dry the wet out more evenly and slowly. Semper Fi
