What's insane how many people download these meetings and write about the greatness about everything he said. I've noticed that Frederick uses a form of mass hypnosis in the way his tones and even how he works his hands as doing certain things it adds to the experiencial way of control that so many people are willing to climb over themselves and family to join him. Or in the case of Oprah, anyone she digs up is in the same vein as Rama. Women are so easy to manipulate and coerce. This is nothing new. Don't forget from where the term Old Wives Tales came from or what that implies. I can't believe anyone watches those TV talk shows.

Hey Rob! My idea of a cult is usually any belief structure that encourages its members to idolize a central human figure or physical entity. Even a company. It ostracizes them from anyone that doesn’t think like the group, and tells individuals how they can live all or most aspects of their daily lives.
Obviously most are religious in nature but I think a lot of MLM’s are cults too.

The only move that has a 100% hit rate is not getting involved in a fight in the first place. The only workout that builds muscle is one that is hard. The best tasting meals take preperation. The best work takes persistant effort. Anyone telling you that theres some magic bullet for any of life's challenges is full of it and wants either your money, your admiration or both.

I’m questioning whether I could ever fall into a cult. What is missing in these peoples lives that make them easily influenced to follow blindly? Is it the need to feel a belonging to something? Loneliness? Naivety? It’s so wild that they play a long with madness. Anywho, he did the best and rightful thing by ending his lies himself. I would say a cult is any community that does not allow you to express, discuss or question the reasons why you exist as a community. Would be interesting to see how these cult leaders speak to their followers to make them do these stupid acts

By the time you figure out "hey maybe this is a cult" you're already pretty far into it and leaving will be painful because you lose your friends. Hopefully you hadn't fully distanced yourself from everyone else in your life, but for many that's the case and they can't bear to leave

Often times we hear of a cult following to something, while that can be a friendly way of following a certain artist, music style or even a movie. I think a real cult is when people follow a certain life style following some rules that are usually dictated by the cult's leaders. Once you give these cult leader or leaders the power to shape your life style it can get dangerous.

I think the definitions of the word cult are accurate enough. This stuff always make me shudder as my mind goes immediately to (the-self-proclaimed) Rev. Jim Jones, and that entire mess. I keep telling myself that today's people are not dumb enough to repeat that, but even here in my home country of NZ, there are some 'organisations' that seem to be skirting around the edges of what's scary and what's not.

There isn't really a way to differentiate between a "religion" and a "cult" in a technical sense. Both can engage in illegal practices, both can have incredibly warped belief systems. Both can venerate their leaders to an extreme degree, and also hide horrible acts. The difference coming to be widely-adopted in the relevant literature is that a "cult" is simply defined as such because it is not socially accepted.

If offered to be part of a cult, don't BITE, because it may seem benign at first but their pattern is:
    Behavior control
    Information control
    Thought control
    Emotional control
Once these are established it has full control over you and it will take your time, money and devotion. Whether the "seller" had good intentions or just wanted to get themselves rich, the worst part is the harm perpetrated on the individuals who BITE into what they're offering, be it a group to belong to, insider knowledge secrets or a purpose to follow. Find your own through legitimate means.

I would consider a cult to be those standard definitions. I have heard repeatedly that its usually people who are smart and who you wouldn't expect to join who get involved. So i just HOPE ill be able to recognize a cult when i see one.

My definition onfa cult would be someone who brain washes a mass into believing that they are a higher being for personal gain, either wealth, status, serial favours, etc.

For me, a cult is something where everyone looks and dresses the same, all have to do something for a higher person (who normally sits around doing nothing) and you have to give them all your possessions or money because “for true enlightenment, you don’t need your possessions”.
They’re like internet scams but in person 🤣

I tend to stick to Isaac Bonewits's definition, though it's actually a test you can conduct on a group. Steve Hassan's BITE model is a more simplified version, IMHO.

Like you said, it doesn't take a doctorate in etymology to find the linguistic link between "Cult" and "Culture".
That said, here's a functional definition:
A more or less organized set of beliefs, values and aesthetics that a group of socially unified _or_ interconnected yet disparate individuals adopts towards common ends ranging from the benign to the eschatological. Cults can be religious, political, or more generally social.
Here's hoping I win. I could use some new rashguards. ;-)

I believe the current definition of a cult a belief in a person or entity, where their goal is manipulating or abusing the followers.

This guy gets all the Dillmans & a few Ashida Kims for good measure. As for defining a cult it's tricky but the best explanation I ever heard of the difference between a cult & a religion is this: In a cult there's one person at the top, raking in all the money that knows it's a scam. In a religion that guy is dead. So I guess that would make Rama's followers a religion now

One time I thought Ki was real was when a 72 yo AikiJujutsu Sensei attacked during casual training. Later, I realized it was because of the stark psychological contrast between the 😃 Sweet Grandfatherly man that joked, shared sake, played with children, etc. *Dropped All Appearances of Kindness & did a straight linear attack, looking through me like he never knew me*
    from 😃 to {{💀}} = 🤯 *WTF⁉️*
