The fact the designer moved from TM to Callaway for some makes this a simple elephant. What do you think? And do you think the average golfers would see the TM shape and think of the designer 1st or not. Let’s hear y’all.
Fact is, the black Odyssey looks far nicer and high quality than the spider, which I use, but which looks like its been thrown together in a big factory in Taiwan. I will swap in a blink, so long as I can get on with the hard feel. I suspect many spider users will too ?
Also that guy owns several patents which I think the "spyder" was one of.
I think the Indianapolis is a similar and better design but never caught the public imagination... so Cally said... we have to shut this Spider crazy down..
I had no idea who the designer was until this video. Saw the shape in the thumbnail when scrolling and thought it was a new TM model.
The most interesting point is do / is it common practice for club designers to own the rights for their designs as opposed the manufacturers.
Ps would take the elephant in this case.
Why is quite simple, Mr Toulon has the patents and used a model that's his at his new employer to sell more putters... And I'm not Gunna lie... Now there's a spider but from odyssey, totally buying it, don't like the feel of TM putters but always liked how it swung
The man who designed the Spider has the patent for it and now works for Callaway, it's Mr Toulon I think.
John Donnelly I saw that video by Rick Shields too. 😊
@@Holf-dk5tv really I only watch Mark 🤗
I thought his name was Rife?
@@rogue9464 he's the bloke at EVNROLL
Thank you Mr Donnelly, confused, I was. (Nothing new for me to be confused)
Laughed my ass off when you said "lot of people doing ytube videos now is there"... that was a good one
Fitted for the Odyssey Stroke Lab Black Ten S putter about a month ago. Love the putter! Easy to align, great distance control, feel off the face and balance! Putting strokes reduced approximately 15% or 6 strokes per round. Best golf club purchase I have made!
I just bought the Stroke Lab 10 in 2-ball. Love it
I recently purchased a Toulon Stroke Lab Portland and I absolutely love it. The Tuttle was going to be my original purchase but when looking at my buddy's after gaming it for 6 months it looked pretty hammered and cheap. These milled Toulons look, feel and perform exceptionally! Thanks for another great video guys. You are my favorite place to nerd out on techie golf gear!
Oh and people need to get over this whole who copied who nonsense. If something works then it works and I want options to choose from when spending my hard earned money... also don't act like it hasn't always been this way. It's really just about brand loyalty more than anything which is a silly concept to begin with and only narrows your own ability to find and use the gear that truly works best for you.
+Mark Crossfield ,
THANK YOU FOR ADDRESSING THE ELEPHANT IN THE ROOM!!😂👍👍
Total respect, for having the conversation.
As to your question? None of them. WHY?
I'm lucky enough to have a TaylorMade Nubbins, face balance and love it! So many Pros, have said, please let me buy it off you! F right off! It's soooo bloody good, forgiving and all I've done is regrip the handle and that is it.
Great video and keep addressing the elephants when they appear.👌🤘😆😂
Jonathan
Mark, as you say there are all at it..... Another elephant in the room Taylormade Pix ball look familiar Coach Lockey !!!
I believe Sean Toulon developed the spider for TM, he moved to Callaway so he took his design with him, upgraded it to a degree and it’s been released! Why not? As rightly observed golf is full of copies, upgrades etc etc!
TaylorMade, odyssey, ping, Callaway, Titleist personally I don’t care what logo and to a point what tech a club has on it what I do care about as a customer is that I have a big range to try and learn the feel ( whatever shape ) any club has in MY hands and it helps me enjoy my golf more. Surely that’s the point. Great video 👍
I've loved my stroke lab 2 ball fang, wanted something newer. Love the look of the "elephant"! But never really got on with Taylormade putters. So the Stroke Lab Ten is a perfect change for me, sticking to a brand and feels that I know are good.
I never cared for TaylorMade putters. I did just buy the Odyssey Model Ten and love the Stroke Lab design. Also bought a Toulon Austin. Buying into Stroke Lab. Great products.
I think it definitely shows the importance of practice with your putter, whatever that happens to be. Good clip.
I’ll definitely be looking at Black Ten once it’s available. Always enjoyed Odyssey putters, and loving my current Tuttle. Hoping the firmness you all talk about isn’t too much of a shift from the soft feel of the current micro-hinge. Others have already tried to replicate the success of the Spider, including Titleist with the Futura 6M, but for me this is more of an evolution by the original designer. The fact he’s now designing for Callaway rather than TM is already a win for Callaway. From a golf consumer perspective, I’m happy that Callaway, and others, offer alternatives to products that prove successful elsewhere. More choice for me 👍🏽
Odyssey's number 7, fang style putter had great success on tour and now TM, Ping and Scotty all have similar designs. Whatever shape is successful will be copied simple as that.
Lovely looking putter. Will be nice to use , but I promise you guys ... if you bend shaft on the bladed putter .. make it sit flat.. you will put beautifully.. try it ! Great vid guys xx
I'd like to give the Ten a go, I like the look of the bold line
I've been using a Tour Spider X all year. It's a smaller version of the original Spider. When it stops working (they always stop working), I 'd look at the Odyssey "Spider".
I think you could make an interesting argument that ALOT of modern day concepts came from PING... even custom fitting. PING seemed to be the first to push that, high MOI putters, game improvement irons. Just something the ending made me think of! Love the content!
MOI? Try the new Cleveland Frontline putters...blew my mind and sold my Scotty! Never putted so well and the MOI is at the front👍
It's quite funny to me as well. Callaway should release a stroke lab mini putter next year.
I moved to Canada when I was 1yrs old from Scotland and used the words Sellotape and Sauce until I grew tired at 10 years old of everyone outside of my home having no idea what I was saying - and it was so hard to change but I did. Testing putters in hurricanes on massive slopes makes for fantastic RUclips videos but Statistics rule golf - and when you see the Statistical benefit of high MOI putters, and what it can do for a 8 foot putt, you will never go back if you are playing for a living; and, you can completely understand why the picture of a putter, for the younger generation, will not be that of a Ping Blade (Sellotape and Sauce), but that of Mr. Toulon's modern Spider (Scotch Tape & Ketchup). That said, the 'harder' insert isn't really for me, but the patents that Evnroll holds, and is enforcing behind the scenes, is affecting the putter world.
White hot face before micro hinges was so nice. Firm feel yet a soft pop. You could feel the ball almost spring off the face. First series of micro hinge was way too soft and squishy. They’re slowly getting better
Looks better than the spider, more of a sporty look and less clunky looking. I want one of these, but on the fence of the previous stroke lab vs the black. I think I like a softer feel, but not sure. Need to find a place with both options available to hit some putts with.
Moved to a stroke lab double wide when they first came out and have loved it. Defo interested in the two new shapes with the higher MOI. Merry Christmas me. ☺️☺️☺️☺️
I think “Mr Toulon” has kept his best work for odyssey, better looking than the spider ? Price is a big question point tho .....
If I were in the market for a 'Spider' style, I'd lean towards the Odyssey simply because in my experience the finish on Odyssey putters holds-up better. Oddly enough, I've owned the Ray Cook 'Spider' and the Taylormade Spider .... kept the Ray Cook and returned the Taylormade.
I like Odyssey putters, play their O works #9 at the moment. But I have been looking around at switch to a mallet. So this just adds to the mix of possible selections. As long as the putter "feels" like it is helping then why not. As mentioned, a Hoover is a Hoover, an Anser is an Anser, so now we have Spider as a possible new generic term.
I'm a Callaway/Odyssey guy. And this putter is clearly a copy of the original by the same guy who designed the original. That being said, as you suggest, it's not the first putter to be copied. I mean there has been copies of Odyssey's # 7. And, as you pointed out, the most copied putter in golf is the Ping Anser. I really like the new Odyssey Ten putter. I don't know if I like it to the tune of $300 at this point. I haven't had it in hand. And I'm not sure about the firmer insert. But it looks great.
I don’t love the Spider but would test the Odyssey because I think they make great putters. Keep up the great work boys, Scott
Im seriously considering a stoke labs myself, so thanks for the vid guys. Top class.
I watched the James Robinson video on the Callaway putters, he mentioned that there is a Callaway podcast talking about them.
Sean Toulon helped design the original spider back in 2007 and now he works for odyssey and helped design Strokelab 10
You should review the Cleveland frontline putters!
Got one it's awesome
I have Danny boys jacket. Love the PM
I had Odyssey and returned it because as a feel putter i had no feed back. With the new designed face 'being' firmer i'll give it a try... but my spider is working just fine currently.
What about the Ray Cook version that came out before these and only a quarter of the price?
A big shot person from TM since long time, quit and came to Odyssey😄
Still play my odyssey white hot 9 putter. Confident with it, and putt well, so no plans to change. It would take a lot to for me to change my putter
Hi Mark I still like my Nike method putter.
Love the alignment lines on those, I game the Oworks Black Marksman S. I also have the stroke lab Tuttle and prefer the softer feel and immediate roll of the Marksman.
Currently use the Spider Red, also have the Wilson as part of the fleet!
The big thing to note about the putters is that both TM and Callaway putters were designed under Toulon. I do think saying there's an elephant in the room is a bit of exaggeration. How many putters are copies of Ping Anser? Even the Wilson 8802 in the video has been copied by other manufacturers. Even the Tuttle that Matt uses is a variation of the old Zebra mallet. However, they've added to the original by having a different insert, the Strokelab shaft, and the bigger grip. So, the same, but different.
Good points
I game a Spider putter. Outstanding. I have no problem with a copy vat version as long as it is legal.
I've just changed to an "elephant" and it's been a revaluation. I was a firm Ping putter fan but my putting was very inconsistent, since using the Spider (there I've gone and said it) my putting is much better (around 2 putts per round). So now I'm a Spider fan and won't change unless I break it.
Good point with the wedges. Hi Toe is such a copy. So yeah, all is fair in love and marketing.
Love odyssey putters, would definitely have a go with these. They look superb
Always thought the Spider was really accurate and I really wanted to game it, just felt like I had an obligation to Callaway to stay with them. Now I can... Good Job Callaway!!
I think this happened because callaway has Tour pros on staff who played the spider, and couldn’t get away from it. They needed something to switch them into it. Plus Sean Toulon designed the spider so he can bring it over
The Ten Black until TM can fix the crappy paint chipping issues.
Black 10 all the way, just cause I love the feel of the counter balance
I LOVE the look of the Ten. The TM Spider is great but I don't want a red putter or a copper putter or a chalk white putter. I want a simple black putter. I do want line up lines. I know TM do the Spider X in black and I might still get it, but this club looks stunning. My only improvement would be for a black face insert and black and grey grip to double down on the blackout affect.
You pick the blade putter because of looks and feel and for the same reason you don’t go with the Cleveland irons. Golf for some is about enjoying playing the game and not always about choosing the club that makes it easy. If it was Bronty chipmaster would have been a game changer.
Ping Vault milled face. No insert BS, COACH ARMY
Yes, SC phantom X has no inserts as well just aluminium face
Designer of spider with rights took the design to Callaway!!!! Got his piece of the pie!!!💪💪💪
I like the look of the evnroll ER10 and now the Spider S (but do not like the micro hinges!!!🙂🙂🙂
I ordered mine this morning!! The 10 that is.
Maybe it's because the TM Spider putter was invented by Sean Toulon who is now with Callaway. So is that really copying when the guy who owns the patent for the Spider putter is now making it for Callaway?
Kinda embarrassing.......but I say that in hindsight after watching a different review.....
Moi is a big thing
I have always used a Anser shape for over 20 years
I just got a Phantom and don’t know why took so long to get one.
So I agree with Matt said. Why would you not use a bigger MOI
PXG has their own version as well, Operator I believe. I have the TM but the real determining factor will be price point. If Callaway is smart they’d come in a little cheaper
Conversation had ! We’ll done lads
Spot on Mark. Pissing match.
I used a Yonex PM blade putter for years, a really beautiful club. Sadly it is very difficult to be consistent with - never regretted moving to Odyssey Tank 7 putter.
I do wonder whether Mark has it right - this is Callaway's way of sticking the finger up at TM. No doubt lawyers for both companies are currently having fun.
Surely the Scotty Futura was first out with this shape? Great video
The bird of prey one kind reminds me of that ping craz-e putter
I like the newer high moi putters. I feel I can keep the face more square. I've putted with a bullseye type putter for 20 years, but I feel like I'm putting better. Feel is the key word, though.
The 10 is what the spider would look like if Sean Toulon still worked at TM, think i would go for the Klingon copy myself "Maltz, chung chi"
Great video, boys! I personally love the thicker line. Mental or not, it makes me feel like I can strike it better out of the center.
PS Mark - would love to see these tested against your Phantom X. It’d be rude not to 😉
I think a better putter MOI test would be to hit putts indoors in a controlled environment. Blindfold Matt and tell him he has to hit a 10 foot putt. Then you place balls down while he's blindfolded at address with the putter and you place some in the center and some in the toe and some in the heel. Measure how different the results are between the center strikes and the toe and heel strikes. I think you have to do it blindfolded so you don't subconsciously hit it harder when you know you're hitting a toe or heel strike. You want to keep the speed of the stroke as constant as possible but measure the drop off from off-center strikes from a center strike to a non-center strike. That's truly the value of MOI.
Awesome review!!! Please make a review on the Wilson putter 🤩
So is coach's tuttle not just a ram zebra? 😂
Defo
@@MarkCrossfield And #1 Custom Shop is an Anser. :)
Lovin the elephant in the room, and on the green !!
Love how you show the money in the room, but when someone brings an Anser style out, never seen they same type of reaction from you.
Hope they bring a Ten out in red, and a Spider out in black. Just for the craic!!!
The owner of the Patent is king. My question is, how much did it cost Callaway to get Mr Toulon to switch camps and is this the one that will result in companies either ensuring they have the Patents on designs or that employees can not use their Patents elsewhere for a period of time. US Patent Laws must be a minefield to work through.
I've tried some counterbalance putters. And I tried a heavy grip on my own putter to see how it went longer term. In the end I felt that counterbalanced the putter felt light and controllable - but over time I really felt I'd lost some distance feel. So being direction accurate was nice....but being a yard longer or shorter than a normal mid sized pistol grip was not nice.
If Toulon owns the patent and not TM, i assume TM will stop making the spider, unless they have a licensing agreement, which is possible, but doubtful if Odyssey is now selling a putter that looks very similar to a spider. The fact Odyssey is now selling this design speaks to what they think of it - obviously they think it has significant merit knowing people were going to question whether they ripped off the design from TM.
I love my odyssey 1w which is a variation of the ansor style
Lookalikes: PING Valor looking like Odyssey Bird of Prey, PING Tyne is like Odyssey model 7, and PING Wolverine is like Odyssey Marxman.....so some high MOI shapes may be better than others.Would be interesting to test similar shapes blades and mallets of different brands against each other.....
I tried the spider and did not like the look of it...it would not try the 10. I dont mind stranged shapes, I currently use the Cure RX2. I also love the Ping Konlinc Centershafted putter. I like big MOI and I cannot lie! (Insert music here)
Would love to test the elephant against the TaylorMade spider.
So since we're on the topic of this type of putter, how about a review of the directed force putter?
Can't imagine anyone wanting to use one of them. It looks hideous. Interesting concept though and torque balanced putters certainly make sense
@@paggolfisclueless7895 Honestly, it doesn't look any worse than the spider or these new odysseys... They're all hideous.
@@taylorthurston8892 Beauty is in the eye of the beholder I guess mate. I just can't see people liking a putter with the face that far ahead of the shaft if it's the model I've seen
Taylormade copied Callaway with pix balls when truvis was successful. Also TM brought out Hi-Toe wedge after Callaway released PM Grind wedge. Their HQ are across the street and are arch rivals like you said. The guy who is head of odyssey was at TM for over 10 years (Sean Toulon). Not worried about copies. Each manufacturer can have the same shape so people can choose brands and benefits of each (shafts/inserts/etc)
"........ have a little play inside where we can feel everything." 😮
Lockeys face when the TM comes in to shot 😂😂
Very funny ,well done mark that’s the first thing I thought its a new TaylorMade spider ...😉
Note that the guys who created and holds the patent for the TaylorMade Spider moved to Odyssey earlier this year.
I love crossfield!!!!
I wonder if Callaways tour players have had a role to play in this. Even if they don't have a 14 club deal they would like their player to 'choose' a Callaway product, and lets face it, the Spider has proved very popular. The Epic Flash is killing it on tour, so they would love the same to be true of their putters
It is a copycat industry. Just like Coach stated "Why not get their piece of the pie". I game Callaway irons , Rinky and 3W but have a Taylormade M4 (only because that's the one I hit more consistently) with an Odessey putter. I do like that HD line.
The market drives what they need to make. If there’s a demand for it they should make it. It may well be a statement to say, what you can do we can do. But I still think they will feel there is a demand for this product.
I agree with dan the future of putters may well be mallets. But this takes time, generations of kids need to grow up seeing iconic moments/puts being holed using mallet putters.
I think it would be interesting to compare modern high MOI putter like Odyssey Stroke Lab with modern low MOI putter, like the newest line from Cleveland. Both have a case for its tech and I am wondering who is right.
Odessy #7 is being copied all over the place. I think odessy sees many top tour pros using the spider so want to get into that market share. I changed from o-works #1 to a stroke lab v-line, stroke lab is surprisingly firm feeling. I'll 100% change to one of thoese.
Very good video. I think its no different than the car, jet, and so on companies. If it sells and works, every one will build it.
“Feel” is the vibrations coming through the shaft and grip into your hands. I wonder if the graphite shaft is more responsible for the difference in feel compared to the face.
I’ve never had to strike a putt that hard in my life. Would’ve liked to see more 5-10 footers to see how they performed
Epic flash twistface.... can't wait
The spider shape is always gonna be an homage to TM. However, the stroke lab series are (imo) too stiff off the face. I prefer a putter with high moi but a soft feel.
Matt: go Toulon next year please. Atlanta i'd say would be your swag
Also the designer of the spider now works for odyssy
