  • Stabilizing Dinosaur Gembone
    In this video I teach you step by step how to stabilize dinosaur gembone.
    The gembone king Mark Anderson taught me and I knew it would be something my amazing subscribers could benefit from.
    Gembone can be calcite soft or jasper hard or a mix of the two. By using this technique you will save yourself time and frustration and it will make it so you get an exquisite polish every single time!
    If you use this technique to treat your gembone or any other rock, then you must disclose that it has been treated prior to sale.
    If you have any further questions head over to my group on facebook that is only for my youtube subscribers
    groups/dreme...
    ... also be sure to subscribe to Mark Anderson's channel he has a new video ready to drop that is going to be very helpful to all of us ♡

    Now I'm going to have to get some. And how interesting I didn't know that that's where the better part of dyno bone came from.

    Finally I get to see a video recommendation from you again. Its also a subject i wanted to learn more about. Would this work for torquise by chance?

    • @KerstenSaffordArt
      @KerstenSaffordArt  10 месяцев назад +1

      If it's chalky you are better off with cactus juice. Or no stabilization of possible. I'd do things different if I remade this video

    • @luisgomez385
      @luisgomez385 10 месяцев назад

      @KerstenSaffordArt Thank you. Sadly, I can't use cactus juice. I don't have access to a vacuum chamber. The torquise is not really chalky, just a bit soft.

      You could do this just paintit on slowly and watch how it sucks in touch up spots that sucked in a lot and that will harden it up so much you could use the turquoise in a ring even. 😁

    • @KerstenSaffordArt
      @KerstenSaffordArt  3 года назад

      Nope as it cools it draws it in. You dont need to dip it either like I did you can just paint it on (since it's so spendy)

    Curious what the temperature setting is for your hot plate? Also, what would be the deciding factor between choosing to treat a slab versus a oiece that has already been cabbed? Thank You!

    • @KerstenSaffordArt
      @KerstenSaffordArt  Год назад +1

      The temp is on low. You can heat gun it to check the temp. And then as far as knowing which ones to treat... Look at the webbing when you get it wet it will absorb the water. A fully agatized bone does not need to be treated and the water will stay on the slab longer. Be sure if you treat the bone to get every bit of oil out of it. Or it will eventually bubble up and ruin the piece.

      Not this week but nethe following week 12/8 our live guest is going to be Mark Anderson who taught me how to do this. Would be great to have you ask any questions you have them and get them answered by the expert 😁🪨⛏️💎🦝

    How can you tell the diference between dinosaur and whale? I got a one kilogram eroded vertebra but not I'm not sure.

    • @KerstenSaffordArt
      @KerstenSaffordArt  Месяц назад

      Generally location of collection. The color. Whale bone isn't ever colorful like dino because of where the mineralization occured at. I Utah and Colorado there's a lot of mineralS in the silicates. Also the formation of the trabeculae where the Gembone is less conformed to a certain shape and the whale bone is generally more rounded. These are observations I've made and I'm sure there is more but these are ones I know for sure 😁⭐✅ I hope that helps ❤️

    How does your epoxy compare to opticon or cactus juice which is what other people are using to stabilize???

    • @KerstenSaffordArt
      @KerstenSaffordArt  10 месяцев назад +2

      This one is better for deep coverage it's more heavy duty than either opticon or cactus juice. More for the heavy agates. What happens is the traebecula of dino bone can often be calcified while the inner "cells" are agatized. So this helps more with the orange peeling effect. Cactus juice is more for chalky stones like turquoise and variscite were the matrix is more like hardened mud. Opticon is great for doublets and triplets and intarsia work. Hope that helps 😁

    Can you stabilize a whole piece of rough or dose it have to be slabed first also I have a rough piece of shadicite that is fairly large I was wondering if I could stabilize the whole thing or should I slab first then stabilize if needed.

    • @KerstenSaffordArt
      @KerstenSaffordArt  2 года назад +1

      Stabilize only if needed as it does make the piece lose value. However if it will save something precious then I'd do it. Be sure that you test on a small piece to see how it will look and react. ♡

    How far does it penetrate in? Or does it just coat the surface ? Thanks in advance 😊

    • @KerstenSaffordArt
      @KerstenSaffordArt  6 месяцев назад +1

      It depends first you need to make sure you got all the oils out so a good soap with dawn wash and a night or week in kitty litter than another dawn wash. Then dry out completely I like to dry in a toaster oven on low. If you paint it on and dry on a silicon mat on a mug warmer or flat electric skillet on 180-200 over a couple days it should go into any and all cracks if you have a very soft bone that's brittle I would recommend instead cactus juice in a vacuum sealer then into a toaster oven on low outside or in a garage the fumes can be pretty yucky. Hope that helps. Mark Anderson has some great videos as wellon the subject as does lapidary Dave I believe. 💪🏻😁⭐
