I met John Hitchcock at Heroes in 2022, the same year and con I believe I met both of you. He didn't have much of a set up, but he did have this book on him. Though it wasn't just the book that he had that caught my eye, it was the binder he had with him.
In this very unassuming binder was a plethora of drawings and letters from Alex Toth. I lost track of time, turning from one page of this glorious binder to the next as every page was better than the last one. It truly was a life changing experience for me to be that close to Toth originals. Though it was more than just that it was original art, with every moment I had to absorb this breathtaking artwork and lettering also came with stories from John. Maybe 45 minutes to an hour passed that day when I was going through that binder, and every second counted. I will admit, when I finally got to the end of the binder, it was bitter sweet, but absolutely worth it. So I made sure the buy the book from John afterwards.
Experiences like those are ones I truly cherish. Quiet moments that even as the world around me explodes with excitement, all other sounds dissipate as I narrow my focus on something truly special. So every time I crack open my copy of this book, I'm taken back to that day at Heroes Con, flipping through a one of a kind binder, one page at a time.

Man, those were the days. Imagine being able to just send a letter to your favorite cartoonist and starting a correspondence. I have to assume that these days the fandom is too large and there’s too much awareness/fear of weirdos. What a time.

Glad you guys found The Doodle Book! Alex got to see the galleys and approve of everything before he passed, but I didn't get to do the thing I wanted most, bringing cases over to his home in the Hollywood Hills. After I filled orders with shops for a while I sent the remainder of the books to John Hitchcock. His store is Parts Unknown in Greensboro, NC and he may still have copies you can order directly if you're trying to find it. I barely have any, I should have saved myself a box!

Dik Browne is a very underrated artist. I wasn't surprised when I first learned that Toth was a fan, both obviously cared a lot about solidity in the drawing, clarity and economy of line. His ad work for J&C was awesome (but don't read them, it hurts the brain;)), also the Tracy Twins strips, Hi and Lois was often extremely beautiful and elegantly drawn... Some of this work I would call perfect, pretty much everything else was really, really good.

If you like Tintin books, I recommend the series Blake and Mortimer (which has some very unusal word-picture combinations) by Edgar P. Jacobs, and Yoko Tsuno by Roger Leloup, both former assistants of Hergé. Both series are available in English from Cinebook. There is not as much internet coverage (in English) about European comics as American or North-East Asian ones. I learn something new from every one of your videos.

I read somewhere that Toth wrote to Grist and praised his comics. Grist thought Toth just wanted free copies. haha!

Grist printed Toth' letter in the book and quoted him later on the back of a trade, so he got something out of the deal ;)

Toth is a giant! I always appreciate the variety of your videos. Have you read the graphic novels MY FAVORITE THING IS MONSTERS by Emil Ferris or ON A SUNBEAM by Tillie Walden? I think both of those books are stunningly beautiful.
