There are budget friendly switch which can give 10gig . Add on card is something adds cost. cost depends on the need if one pc alone need 10gig or all 4 pc needs 10gig and buffer then 8 port SFP+ USW-Aggregation-EU . Lan based 10gig is cheaper . compared to SFP+ as module cost. But one can get DAC cable which required switch to be close to pcs' . Why NAS was not opted due to huge space requirement or limited specs.
Few improvements could be made Instead of bringing two cable for internet and 10gb server link you cloud have bought only one cable and connected it to the 10gb switch. Then from that you could have taken one link and connected it to the router. Size of the hole and expense of the cable is saved. Also all the devices now connected to wifi can also access the server storage. Speed will be not that good coz its is getting accessed via wifi but atleast you can stream a 4k video or anything similar to it. Also with 1gb and a wd nas with 1gb on network I get a maximum copy speed of 123MB but with 2.5gb you are getting only 112MB there is something wrong in this. Also if he is only one main PC then instead of investing on a 10gb switch he could have invested in a network card which would perform well in that case. Or instead of doing all these. You cloud have created an entire network setup with tp omada devices and connected then with fiber cable which will be kind of the same cost but lot of improvements.
