Thanks Matt! Be careful now though, your gonna get the southern boys riles up with that kinda talk 😂. Smartweed is definitely a favorite of the teal from what I’ve seen too
Thomas, this is a great video. I think about it when I see the arrow head on my duck holes. I think that unidentifed plant is woolgrass which has not food value for ducks but does provide some thermal cover. It grows in big clumps and can really take over. The seed heads look a lot like proso millet which is a good duck food but I don't think the proso grows in the big clumps. We're not to far apart, so if you want to see what I'm doing go check out my channel and my latest post, Duck Groceries, about what I have growing.
Thank you very much! I agree on the wool grass, thought it was proso for a bit but after exploring this swamp during winter I noticed a lot of wool grass and no millet. I'll check the duck groceries this evening!
I didn’t know smart weed was that important for food source value. Arum is definitely the most used plant i see in my swamp. 5:44 Wool grass i will Look that up. Thanks
I've killed a lot of ducks in little flooded timber holes like that! Do y'all have much wild oat in your area? It tends to grow on dry ground in the woods, but when it floods, the ducks seem to like it. That stuff at the end looked like a type of panicum, maybe.
I just looked up the range map for wild oats and it says they're in VA but I can't remember ever seeing them. I think you got the grass right, panic grass
Ducks really like possumhaw, too. They are small trees/shrubs that grow along field edges and on creek banks. They drop thousands of little red berries in the fall and winter. Woodies love to hang out under the branches.
Hey man I’m also a Virginia native. I live in Rockingham county really really want too get into waterfowl hunting but don’t know where to start being that 90 percent of the public land this way are mountain ranges. I’m not sure if you use ONX hunt map but if you do how do you locate marshy type land too hunt on the app? Also just any advice in general when it comes to finding a place to go on public?
There are some swamps up that way but they’re few and far between. Your best bet in that part of the state is hunting farm ponds. Just ride around during season looking for ducks and geese and then ask permission from landowners once you figure out what ponds they’re hitting. There are also a couple very big public lakes near Rockingham that will hold birds when it gets very cold. I use the BaseMap app, it’s a lot like OnX but I like it better
Virginia Outdoors Unlimited I’ll definitely have to do that! I’m super stoked for hunting season I’m general this year but I am itching to get into some fucks & geese! Also I’m still having a hard time understanding the laws with public lakes when it comes too waterfowl hunting I’ve had a few in mind but I’m not 100 percent sure how it works. So far I think switzer dam is going to be my go to if it’s allowed.
Thomas it's kinda hard to tell from the video, but it looks like panic grass. You may look it up and see if that looks right to you. Panic grass is a great duck food.
The plant at 5:20 is sprangletop I believe.
Is it zizania aquatica ? Wild rice?
I don't think so, we don't have that in many swamps around here unfortunately
Proso millet
Swomp feuds
That's a nice timber hole 😎. Smartweed is the main thing I look for when teal scouting.

@@HokeOutdoors 😂😂
Barnyard grass is another good source and the mallards will chomp down on acorns in the timber!
Can you do one on beaver ponds because they don’t really dry up
Loved the video👏🏽
Thanks Andrew!
Very good... I learned what some of those weed things actually are...
Thanks Kraig! Good to hear you got some use out of this one
Great video 👍
Any videos of how to plant wild rice ,?
Thank you! I've never planted rice so I don't, we will likely try it next season though

Drop some of that Japanese millet in there👍

Great video too!
Thanks Joel! I did turn out to be panic grass. I'd been looking at it forever and couldn't figure it out for the life of me.
@@HokeOutdoors right on!
Interesting. I’d rather feed my duck than hang out with a duck killer. ....😑dick
Hmmmm…. I see both sides of this dilemma 🤔
