Apparently Tom Hanks was so likeable on the set of He Knows You’re Alone that the filmmakers decided to change their minds about his character dying lol
One movie that comes to mind is Sorority House Massacre, which has a silent killer who murdered his family and is now after his sister years later. Now the movie does have a sequel, which is more like what you'd expect from a movie with that title and has nothing to do with the first. Heck you could put the second movie in a Slumber Party Massacre knock-offs list.
I love both those trilogies. Sorority house massacre is okay, but I love 2 and 3. And slumber party massacre 2 is one of my favorite slasher films. So absurd
The thing is that Halloween isn't a ripoff. It's a remix. Taking elements of Giallo, Black Christmas, Psycho, Peeping Tom, a dash of Texas Chainsaw and making something new. Becoming a nexus for an entire subgenre.
Awesome vid, Josh! Fun fact: my first year grad school acting teacher was in He Knows You're Alone. She sadly passed in 2017, but she was a wonderful person and i am thankful I got to study under her.
Definitely plenty before Halloween. The earliest slasher horror i've personally seen is The Bat from 1959, but i guess And Then There Were None from 1945 is like a slasher too, just not a horror.
It doesn’t matter if Halloween wasn’t the first slasher, it was the first slasher anybody cared about. Unless you’re a horror aficionado, nothing before Halloween matters.
Eh I say Prom Night 4 is a bit of Halloween knock off as the killer is priest who kills a couple is lock away for years as the church thinks he’s pure evil(because he has stigma) he escapes and returns to where he lived as a priest to kill random kids, that’s about it though
I loved “He knows you’re alone”. It used to be on late night television all the time when I was younger. I had never heard of “Halloween”, so the similarities didn’t bother me.
Halloween Night by the Asylum known for knockoffs doesn't really steal the story but we do get a glimpse of a guy in a jumpsuit and white mask (not Michael Myers looking) coming through the door at the end.
I never understood why producers/directors thought mimicking music from successful movies was a smart idea. As a kid it just made me want to go watch the original film instead.
Actually seen most of these. Final Exam is good. I used to watch Offerings all the time when I was young. I worked at the Video World so had a VHS copy. I just received my blu ray of He Knows You’re Alone to upgrade my VHS. I always liked this one because for the opening scene.
Not a film, but an episode of the Australian sitcom "All Together Now". I forget the title of the episode but it was something to do with someone trying to break into the house. The story isn't like Halloween, but the music that plays in all the suspenseful scenes may as well be the Halloween theme note for note played in reverse.
One I always think of a Halloween knock off is 'Party Crasher: My Bloody Birthday'. Very low budget horror movie, about a kid that gets made fun of and drugged on his birthday so he kills some people. He spends time in an asylum. He gets brought home something like 15 years later. He has a younger sister who has visions and or a psychic link with him (but that's not really much of a plot point), and I think his psychiatrist ends up shooting him near the end....but the body is gone by the last shot. Another thing about it is, he kinda rips off Hannibal Lecter's look as he wears all white and has the mouth guard thing...and there's a weird middle section where he saves a kid's life by killing a vicious dog and people are all "Well maybe he's not so bad after all" and go to throw a party for him. Shenanigans ensue.
I think the only one I've seen of those was "Final Exam", which was on HBO or Cinemax or something not too long ago. It was one of those movies where shortly after I started watching it, I could tell it wasn't a good movie, but I couldn't stop watching it because I just wanted to see what happens.
Hmm. I want to make a movie and credit Tom Savini. "Well. We watched From Dusk Til Dawn." Them: "That doesn't count" Me: "Um....Hung a photo of him in the effects studio?"
Jack-O from the 90s with his jack o lantern head, sickle, and potato sack suit. It's a demon summoned yrs ago and comes back to town on Halloween night
Final Exam and Offerings are Great Films, I Remember watching Them on my Sunday Movie Nights, I don't know what I did next on the Sunday Movie Nights after that one, but it might of been Action or Superhero Stuff, Sunday Movie Nights are the Best. 🙂🙂🙂👍👍👍
Imo offerings is more of a slasher parody bc of the acting is way over the top and the fact a minor character is called Ben Dover and there's a canibalism joke
Nightmares in a Damaged Brain.....I remember renting this back in the 80s. The only store that would carry this sleaze fest was a little mom n pop rental store located on "the wrong side of town". That store had some of the best sleazy horror flicks. This movie in particular was under the title Nightmare and distributed in a big clunky box (usually reserved for porn flicks) on the Continental Video label. I miss those days.
there was a logical and theoretical reason for calling Halloween a ripoff of Black Christmas. rumors say it was intended to be a thought-of sequel to Black Christmas.
Never seen any of these. Btw, it's Mee-Kell-ee Soh-ar-vee, not Michelle, lol. I thought his films La Chiesa and La Setta were great, but they rarely get a mention from reviewers. Interesting video, anyway.
I just remembered this weird Halloween ripoff called Death on Demand. It's not a ripoff of the first movie though. It's a ripoff of Halloween Resurrection.
