theirs an old saying that I think many who have thought and survived in arm conflicts knows what this means "war never changes". To those who served and those who have pay the ultimate price thank you for keeping the world safe from those who would cause it harm.
There is a great line said at the end of Jarhead. The soldier comes home but he never leaves the battlefield. His body is home but his mind still remembers all of what was war. Which if you have seen American Sniper is shown when he attacks the family dog only to realize what he did all because the sound of the kid screaming while playing with the dog triggered his memory of when he couldn't save a little boy who was killed by having his head drilled into with a power drill. He was very close so he could hear the kid screaming and his father begging them not to kill his son. A memory like that is never forgotten nor is it easy to cope with, you were there, you had a gun but you couldn't save the kid because your enemy knew you were there and would shoot you if you even peeked. Warzone PTSD is a lot worse than general PTSD as it can trigger very bad events to happen. Chris Kyle, the actual American Sniper was murdered by another soldier who he was trying to help, i would wager the soldier lost grip on reality and accidentally murdered Chris in the moment. A soldiers PTSD is not something you should think is safe as it can kill you, easiest way is to sit and talk with them, keep any and all weapons or objects out of reach as soldiers would even use a large stone in a survival situation if they had to. Even Peaky Blinders there is a PTSD moment where a retired soldier is screaming at everyone that the people talking are not voices in his head and when the leader of the Peaky Blinders goes to him, he instantly drops the gun and makeshift shield he has as the leader was also the man's Sargeant while they were soldiers. He calls him Sargeant even though they are not soldiers anymore which would mean that he was remembering times from the war, things he'd seen and things he'd heard. The soldier comes home but he never leaves the battlefield.
