I love my hammock but the biggest con I have found is finding trees to hang it on. ;-) Most of the time everywhere I am going I have been able to find a good setup but it's a gamble for sure.
I'd go for a hammock system but don't for exactly the same reasons. If I'm paddling around exploring I'm going to find small islands and/or rocky shores not giant redwoods to sling my hammock to.
It frustrates me that videos like this don’t get more views. These are great tips! I particularly agree with you about cots, I have no problem with sleeping on a cot for multi week trips. People look at them and have a hard time understanding but they are superb. Sadly those same folks end up suffering on air mattresses.
Never considered the cot. Space in kayaks are premium. We use hammocks alot. Side sleepers with hammocks usually set up a ridge line for it that gives a flatter lay. Weight is normally coming from the trees straps sold in stores. I have a hammock from hummingbird. With their suspension that I can pair it with a lite silpoly tarp and easily get under a pound if I didn't love my 1lb nylon trap so much. Even at that I have a 2.5 lb setup including a 3 season 40 degree bag. I'm surprised you didn't mention just a tarp and bag on the sand. My son and I enjoyed that when he was a teen. Thanks for the video. It's rare you see people not pushing a brand for money. It's refreshing.
That was highly entertaining and well done. My sleep system is exactly the one you recommend, pad and pillow. The same ones you show. I've got a small cheap inflatable kayak (just getting started) and have a premium on storage until I get a bigger kayak. My luxury items are a chair and small table (like really small) but I can make coffee & play chess on it (Luxury!)
I would also consider a luxurious heavy bulky self inflating mattress. Zenbivy or Nemo Roamer are the only two „smaller“ ones which may fit inside your kayak. If it fits - I bring it :)
I’m a side sleeper and always worry that the mattress pads will provide no support or cushion for my hips. But, they’re so small and light…. *sigh* Great video!! Thank you!

Yup me too. Since I’m in AZ we don’t have a lot of trees in lower desert regions.
