The meaning of this song comes from the Ancient Slavic traditions, basically SHUM is a name of a forest God, in ancient traditions, women were singing these kind of Mantras to wake this God up with the coming of Spring after his long Winter slumber.

In Serbian, forest is SHUMA, but one of these ancient slavic gods was Leshi, probably connected with forest, serbian name for the tree where nuts are, is Leska, Leshnik is nut.
Holy tree of Slavs was „Hrast/Zapis"

    Oh Spring song, Spring song
Where have you spent your Winter?
In the garden, sitting on a maple tree
    You’ve been spinning a shirt.
There on the edge of a forest
An owl is blowing into the water.
    I’ll sing a song -
    Let her hear it.
    Shum, get twined with periwinkle
I’m singing the vesnyanka to you.
Sowing, sowing, sowing, sowing hemp plants,
Sowing, sowing, sowing, sowing green ones.
    Come Spring, come
    Don’t wait around
    We’ll go outside
    to love each other.
    Oh Spring, our Miss,
    Look in our window.
    We had sang our song
    And the Sun shined on.
Come on, come on, let’s twine the Shum,
Twine the Shum, dance it around.
Sowing, sowing, sowing, sowing hemp plants,
Sowing, sowing, sowing, sowing green ones.
    Shum, get twined, get twined!
    Shum, get spread with periwinkle.
Sowing, sowing, sowing, sowing hemp plants,
Sowing, sowing, sowing, sowing green ones.
    Oh vesnyanka, vesnyanka
Where have you spent your Winter?
In the garden, sitting on a maple tree
    You’ve been spinning a shirt.
There on the edge of a forest
An owl is blowing into the water.
    I’ll sing a song -

I’m singing the spring song to you.
Sowing, sowing, sowing, sowing hemp plants,
Sowing, sowing, sowing, sowing green ones.
Come on, come on, we’ve made some noise.
Made some noise and awoke the Spring.
Sowing, sowing, sowing, sowing hemp plants,
Sowing, sowing, sowing, sowing green ones.

What this song sounds like based on your language skills:
    a) you speak ukraine -> cool song about celebrating the return of spring
    b) you speak a differenr slavic language -> nice folkish song. Something about villages and planting something green
    c) you don’t speak any slavic language -> epic druidish chants from the frozen heart of russia

Sorry but I have to confuse you, but the Slavs don't listen to their folk songs at parties. They are used to listening to rap, pop, "disco polo" etc. Songs that are cultural, usually listened to at themed events or celebrations. however, fewer and fewer people listen to such songs, they are usually older people. However, it is possible that this song is hanging around the parties as it is more of a mix of genres of music.

What exactly do you not understand? I may be able to explain. Vesnyanka is a special type of ritual song our ancestors used to sing to make the spring come faster, they also sowed different plants, like hemp plants to make ropes and baskets. An owl blowing on the water be a trace of some ancient belief about those birds being able to clear the water with the sounds they make:)

I challenged myself to try out slavic traditional throath singing during Easter because the weather was awful, and I was stuck inside a lot with little to do. Well, I found my throath register and impostation at first shot by singing along with my headphones on a slightly slower tune in a lower key, becouse the notes are longer and don't go too high or fast, so I was more relaxed and have more time to tune in and get in the sync! Beginners luck or good slavic blood, Idk, but I nailed it and I found the whole experience so amazing, becouse I was also registering my voice, so I can listen to myself later and figure out what adjoustments or mistakes I needed to correct! Now, while I was doing it my voice made sounds I never heard it do like ever before and honestly it was confusing to not sound like myself and even when I relistened my registered voice, it really did sound completly unlike me! 😂 Now the challenge is to spice it up with switching it with other registers and alterning it... Plus now I've really improved my ear to recognizing throath sounds even in an english pop song and when the singer only throws it in on one or two syllables in the entire song in a throath register and even if they're rounding up the vocals or avoiding accenting it heavily! Ethnic throath singing is so underrated, but it really opens you up to so many new variations and possibuilities! Cann't wait to start showing of my new singing skill in a couple of months!😂

Mine is English, and I live in America, so when I tell people it they’re like: “isn’t that song Russian? How do you do that? Are you from Ukraine?” And also: “What the fuck is that.”
Yeh people in America know absolutely nothing about Slavic languages(they also think that Ukraine is part of Russia, so you know.) There are or course exceptions, but I am the only person I know who knows about Eurovision, anything about Slavic culture, and I only know a few people who know as much geography and History as me(Most people learn it because of me)
Sorry about the long reply, I’m terrible at saying things in short. Hope you have an amazing day/night!

This is the English lyrics of this song.................
Oh Spring song, Spring song, where have you spent your Winter?
In the garden, sitting on a maple tree, you’ve been spinning a shirt
There on the edge of a forest an owl is blowing into the water
I’ll sing a song - let her hear it
    [Chorus]
    Shum, get twined with periwinkle
I’m singing the spring song to you
Sowing, sowing, sowing, sowing hemp plants
Sowing, sowing, sowing, sowing green ones
    [Verse 2]
Come Spring, come, don’t wait around
We’ll go outside to love each other
Oh Spring, our miss, look in our window
We had sang our song and the sun shined on
    [Chorus]
Come on, come on, let’s twine the Shum
Twine the Shum, dance it around
Sowing, sowing, sowing, sowing hemp plants
Sowing, sowing, sowing, sowing green ones
    Shum, get twined, get twined!
    Shum, get spread with periwinkle
Sowing, sowing, sowing, sowing hemp plants
Sowing, sowing, sowing, sowing green ones
    [Bridge]
Oh Spring song, Spring song, where have you spent your Winter?
In the garden, sitting on a maple tree, you’ve been spinning a shirt
There on the edge of a forest an owl is blowing into the water
I’ll sing a song - let her hear it
    [Chorus]
    Shum, get twined with periwinkle
I’m singing the spring song to you
Sowing, sowing, sowing, sowing hemp plants
Sowing, sowing, sowing, sowing green ones
Come on, come on, we’ve made some noise
Made some noise and awoke the Spring
Sowing, sowing, sowing, sowing hemp plants
Sowing, sowing, sowing, sowing green ones
