- If you guys are wondering: is the carly car scanner good? no. Sorry for the rant guys, but what this company is doing is ridiculous. I've had this scanner for years and it worked fine, now they updated the app which now hides the vehicle error codes behind a paywall - that is disguised as a simple $5 per month payment, thats actually billed annually and there's no way to get them to stop billing you. According to some of their app store reviews, people have had to shut down their card accounts to stop them from automatically billing. Wanted to cover the shady business practices, no one like any company that does this. Also wanted to let people know about this before they buy a scanner for their car.

You just stopped me from buying one. I’m not a fan of subscription services, but hobbling a perfectly functional device with no warning is immoral. That’s not a company I want to spend money with.

I was just about to hit BUY and decided to check a few reviews! thank you for pointing this ! There really is a fine print stating its an annual subscription!! HOLLY MOLLY, no thanks. Carly SHAME ON YOU!!!! Just lost another potential customer !
Unfortunately, I didn't see this before I placed an order. It took a MONTH to recieve the scanner (a month that comes out of my subscription). But the scanner didn't work (no WiFi signal). Having now learned more about this shady shit-show, I decided to return it for a refund. I opened a ticket for the return, and shipped it back. A month later, no refund, and Carly refuses to refund the purchase price because I have "acquired the features". As you say, it's not about the money. But If I can stop 100 people from buying this shady piece of shit from this garbage company then it will be worth it.
Another idiot that failed to read the fine print before hitting the 'buy now' button. There is an asterisk (*) next to the purchase price and if you read the relevant text that corresponds to said *, it CLEARLY states that a yearly subscription is required to access all the features. It's been there for years, it's nothing new.
The guy in the video is pissed because HE CHOSE not to renew his subscription, then for whatever reason the device continued to work for 2 years, probably until the company got wise and closed the loophole. So he got 2 years free use out of it anyway.
I have had this device for years and I can tell you it is brilliant, so long as you pay for the service. It has allowed me to activate functions on my car that are normally only available on more expensive models. I've turned off annoying chimes, beeps and bongs and disabled driver assist functions such as lane keeping assist, overspeed warnings, seatbelt not fastened chimes, all kinds of stuff.
Don't listen to tools like this guy in the video, he's the scammer, not the company.

I have the same issue. It finally arrived 2 days ago, but it doesn’t do anything that I thought it was supposed to do. Apparently the scanner is free, but you pay for a licence. I have piece of shit I can return or do anything with.

That subscription is per car model I think. For example if you sub for bmw you can’t use it on Toyotas
If you buy the All Brands version you can

Since the days of the "Check Engine" light or projected "Service" dates in owner accessible settings I have been skeptical of all new cars. After the last Warranty Service on my 2008 BMW I stopped going to the dealership and have been doing the maintenance myself. The annoying "time for service reminders" can be reset by me. I do have a DTC warning and stopped driving it for a while. Thanks to a RUclips video, a temporary fix and repair was explained. I think I'll buy Lottery tickets instead. 😎
Just saved me! I was about to order that damn thing and realized it's asking now to select the specific car you want to use it for! I was like, WTF? I wana use it for different cars. And in your opinion what is a good alternative? That deliver same or similar service at a decent price? Because carista is the same , monthly subscription
I also did a negative review on my channel. Carly company is really shady; even when you try to order the Scanner, it states the price without telling you that the price you pay is only a yearly fee. That is written in super small writing at the bottom of the website, so you won't notice.
And the tool is crap, that are 5x more advanced tools for the same price. I wonder if I will be able to get out of my subscription I have it for around 6 months.

@@bernardicasapic8709I use Carista. I have a Skoda Superb and a VW T6 Transporter. I paid £50 ish for the year and it does all you need a code reader to do (incl simple mods).

I've decided to go with a €10 OBD2 instead.
I wish this was a problem with just Carly but unfortunatly it isn't. So many companies are now forcing people to pay subscription fees to access services on products they already paid for. Even some car manufacturers are trying that sh*t! We are now well into the era of "every product is a service" and "you will own nothing and be happy". Massive consumer pushback is the only way these greedy companies will learn. Thanks for spreading the word and saving people from getting ripped off.

I have Read that Mercedes are doing the Self Same Thing Now. When you buy a New Mercedes the Cars Software is Free for the First FIVE YEARS, this is Written into your Purchase Contract. After Five Years you have to have a Subscription to retain many of the Vehicles Features, otherwise they will be simply switched off by Automatic Updates to the Cars ECU?

Same issue for me. It's bricked. Carly didn' make clear it was a yearly subscription (and I took specific care back when purchasing to look for if that was a limited in time, did not find anything like that). I was surprised a while after, to receive e-mails apparently from Carly and claiming that they did not receive my payment for license renewal. I honestly thought it was some kind of phishing and ignored it. Later I figured out that I did not have access to the features I paid for on the app ... And "of course", the Carly scanner is locked to be usable only with the Carly app ...
I feel those practices being dishonest. I also agree on your comments about Influencers promoting this.
Carly is to me real disapointment and leaves the feeling of having been fooled.

I’ve just purchased a Carly Scanner here in the UK with an annual subscription to cover ALL BRANDS. I paid by ApplePay and Apple’s confirmation email states that I may cancel the subscription anytime and I must cancel by at least one day before the renewal date (July 15 2024) to avoid being charged. Maybe your consumer laws are different in the USA? My only issue with the product so far relates to the seeming inability to scan ABS codes which I thought it was able to do. Maybe you know how to do this with CARLY?
Just buy a reasonable autel scanner that covers abs etc

Sadly BMW have started chargiog for some functions- e.g. heated seats - monthly subscription
They drop the subscription for heated seats, after all the backlash. The same with CarPlay in 2019/2020.
Just bought this rubbish. Bloody annoyed with myself. Couple of things. Make sure that you block your payment system to not allow automatic payments to this supplier when renewal comes around. They sure as hell wont tell you that they are about to rob you. A number of comments have been made regarding (very) slow delivery. I experienced the same treatment. Could this delay mean that your bank cannot chase a refund because of some time limit?
Don't buy Carly! You cannot cancel the subscription. This is not a serious company.

Carly bricked my wife’s ecu and there customer service sucks, I’m the same as you paid for both the dongle and the one time subscription
I’ve since binned it as I had to get the ecu remapped by a bmw specialist
Lucky there is a specialist close by or I’d have a broken bmw

Same with my audi tt. Did a scan was running perfectly. After the scan the diverter valve failed as did the n75 valve . Took it to audi when no difference was made .was told thst carly had messed up my ecu. 400 quid later car is fine . Wont be using the secret folder option again.

When I bought their mk2 adaptor years ago, the promise was lifetime subscription included. It’s going in the bin.
This sucks. I bought Carly about 14 months ago which included the additional mechanic support. After the first year it automatically renewed which I wasn’t aware of…..my bad, as I didn’t read the renewal policy which was on their website in fine print and small font and cost nearly twice what I paid for the initial purchase. I contacted the company but to no avail. CARLY also throws up issues that don’t make sense. My friend works at BMW and he does my oil changes and regular maintenance and updates my software. He prints out what the BMW software reports and it is always clear. My mechanic says he has seen a lot of false issues reported. Shame on Carly.

Have to agree. I just got mine. My 2023 Ford isn't in there. I bought it believing it would open features. Like change lane flashes. Nope. My $30 Amazon with Forescan will do everything I want, but I wanted an upgrade.

This is a great scanner but only when you pay a subscription. If you have no subscription, you won’t be able to see issues, even check engine codes.

Carly is a ripoff! Do not buy. They will charge you an unspecified "annual fee" of $175 then claim that they cannot refund it because you didn’t submit the cancellation one month before your "subscription" ended. What subscription? Oh, they bury that in the terms and conditions and don’t even tell you how much it is going to be. To find out, they direct you to a link that has no amounts and just puts you into a loop. Don't let them steal your money! Run away! Their customer service sucks.
