Legendary comic book artist Robert Crumb discusses his inspiration for illustrating the entire book of Genesis. The New Yorker's Francoise Mouly discusses the process of publishing Crumb's work, saying "we had to proofread the word of God."
    -----
The famed illustrator discusses his work with the art editor of The New Yorker, including his new book, an illustration of the "Book of Genesis", from the Creation to the death of Joseph. - W. W. Norton
Robert Crumb is a leading figure in the history of American underground comics. As a child he spent hours creating elaborate storybooks with his brothers (a group effort reminiscent of the childhood creations of Emily Bronte and her sisters).
In 1968 he began publishing Zap Comics, the series often credited with spurring the underground comics movement in America. Crumb's cartoon "Keep on Truckin'" -- an image of big-footed hipsters in a cheerful strut -- became a popular counterculture symbol, popping up on posters and T-shirts (most produced without Crumb's consent). He also drew a famous album cover for the band Big Brother and the Holding Company (featuring Janis Joplin).
Other Crumb characters include Flakey Foont, Angelfood McSpade, Devil Girl, and the irascible, bearded Mr. Natural. Fritz the Cat, Crumb's comically randy feline, was the star of an X-rated 1972 movie by animator Ralph Bakshi. Crumb, a 1995 documentary by Crumb's friend Terry Zwigoff, brought the cartoonist renewed notoriety and made him a mainstream figure.
Francoise Mouly is art editor for The New Yorker magazine.

Public speaking and interviewing are learned skills. I think the way she says umm and is kind of interrupting him is natural for someone who is not experienced in public speaking and/or interviewing. It's a fear of letting the conversation lag in front of a lot of people. Notice at 1:07 how she picks up the conversation again. She comes across as obnoxious at first but she gives him big ups.

as stated in the book by crumb : He tried to reproduce every word of the orginal text, derived from several sources, including King James version, along with the "five books of Moses" a recent translation by Robert Alter.
The bible is a collection of tales, so a true orginal single book does not exist and never did.

I've studied the Bible for 20 years, and I think R. Crumb has made the greatest edition of Genesis ever.
He makes all the characters look very UNHOLY.

I saw Crumb and Art Spiegleman (Maus) at a show in Austin Tx at the
Harry Ransom Center recently discussing their work and their influences together,
    Francoise Mouly moderated it.
I've met Spiegleman a couple of times before, but this was the first time
I've ever seen Crumb in the flesh,
plus it even had local comic artist
Sam Hurt the creator of Eyebeam at a seperate panel prior to the Crumb/Spiegleman one.
It really was a great evening.

Initially in my life I would've been in complete agreement with mr. Crumb. I hadn't really read the Bible though, just parts of it and mostly without understanding. The Old Testament is about a covenant between God and one man, Abraham. Some of his descendants are also prophets, but their covenant with God comes through Abraham...Now, in these times, it's easy to think that these scriptures have no real meaning and that we've outgrown them. This is because we don't understand the context. What they show is that God has total control of every single one of us here and all nations rise and fall according to His will. Read Revelation and compare it to current events. If that has it's intended effect, then, you have the beginning of wisdom.

Harlen: Revelation was a coded description of the times in which it was written. But it is so vague and archetypal that people can always think it is relevant to the times they live in. The anti-christ was probably Nero, but people see him in The popes, Napolean, Hitler, Regan, Trump and so forth.

    • @harlannorris6035
      @harlannorris6035 4 года назад

@@milascave2 Right. Thus it has always been and thus it will always be. So, carry on as always and don't worry. Faith is a thing that a non-believer just can't get. There most definitely is a God. I know it. Frankly though, Gods will is not reflected in today's church. Look at who and what they embrace. This was also prophesied.

I've always had a mild affinity for Australia, probably based on airbrushed travelogue kind of imagery, but my practical side has figured it to be, in some ways, (attitude-wise) like America of the late 50s and early 60s (before any real consciousness raising). You know, kind of conformist and brainlessly, mildly cheerful for not many good reasons. Both our countries are in trouble, I think, but the whole world seems to be mired in a slump, so....? we muddle onward, Eh?

In this video, Crumb says if you get your morality from Genesis "...I think you're gonna be in trouble."
Having read tons of Crumb's published work, I think if you're gonna get your morality from an R. Crumb book then you're gonna be in a lot of trouble -- and end up in Hell.
In this video, Crumb is wrong when he says every word of Genesis is in his version. In fact, Crumb leaves out many passages from Genesis. I challenge anyone to compare their Bible text to Crumb's incomplete version.

I hope he did a story on Moses, Mr. "Thou Shall Not kill," ordering an attack on the Medianites, and then, after all the man Midianites were killing, ordering his soldiers to kill, among all the captured women and children, all the little boys, all women who had slept with a man, "and as for the little girls, keep those alive for yourselves." Moses was a brutal tyrant who banned religious freedom and committed genocide against his own people.

No, he did not. Trust me. Yes, they did draw pretty lurid cartoon tracts, but they also presented themselves as serious Christians. If Crump had ever encountered them, which is certainly possible, he would like liked the chicks and the flirty fishing but would have been repelled by what the believed and the worship of their leader. and only true members illustrated their tracts and magazines. I briefly belonged to this group, and if that had happened, I would have heard about it.
