Update: Found the website of the Indigenous group leasing out the ski lodge: stwhc.ca/home Also, be sure to check out the bizarre Silver Summit website here: www.silversummit.ca/ The website used to look like this: web.archive.org/web/20210228011942/www.silversummit.ca/
My elementary school from Whitecourt came here for a day in 1995. It was the first time I had ever skied in my life. I was going up the lift and I was too scared to get off at the first stop so ended up freaking out and going all the way to the top by myself. A kind woman with her daughter stayed on the chair behind me and helped me navigate my way down from the top. I literally still have dreams about this place… what a trip to see a video about it all.
I was surprised to see this tiny hill featured. Great to hear the backstory and see footage of it. I skied it a few times in the early 90s, then went back with my board 10 years later. The liftie refused to let me on without a leash, which I cobbled together with some string, but never went back.
I would always drive by the sign for Silver Summit on my way to Jasper for ski trips and wonder what it was like. Thanks for the history of this small resort.
Silver summit is probably the 3rd saddest abandoned ski resort in Alberta (after Fortress and Wintergeen). This resort looks beautiful for being in a northern Foothill region. I would probably ski it a lot if I lived near Edmonton. Definitely a bucket list to skin up and ski down for fun. Who knows maybe the new owners of the land will sell it before it deteriorates because it can definitely reopen with lifts in good shape.
Man that That looks like a really fun place to ride. With some nice options to pop in the trees. I like mountains of this layout. and the more classic new england trails with narrow winding paths. Even as a snowboarder . Its funny how one green trai off to the side of a ski area make thes whole thing seem s more substaintal. I love extreme terrain but if I don't get a nice green run through the trees I do not feel as fullfilled in a day of riding.
Damm was my old neighbour. Not the friendliest guy, but I guess owning a ski hill, which always was at the cusp of bankruptcy, was a stressful endeavour. Only skied there once ~1983.
Yeah, I'm surprised Silver Summit lasted as long as it did with natural snow, little marketing and a nasty access road. Still sad that it didn't manage to reopen though.

Looks like the group with the lease (or maybe they own it?) is in it for the long run.

Looks like a rehabilitation center of some sort. maybe some skiing is part of the program.

@@kosycat1 It’s true, certainly makes a ski area feel bigger than it actually is.
I skied and luged there back the, omg, 1980’s. It was a great little hill.
