Try using a stronger holding product I usually use shine and jam magic fingers since it doesn't leave any residue I hope it works ,what did you use in your sons hair?
I've been trying to do this style for my son and for some reason when I try to start the twist they come out flat into one big "loc". Should I be twisting in opposite directions?

Wrap or roll the hair according to how you twist otherwise you will get frustrated when its time to join and twist
