  • In this program, Wyoming Chronicle will convene a panel of Indian youth to discuss how life on the reservation is reported and perceived. We will also see how a tribal-centered curriculum featuring traditional arts is helping anchor young lives on the Reservation with meaning, sense of purpose, and community.

Hi from East Timor an island country in the northwest of Australia. I wanna say that you guys are amazing, I am also a native to my island of Timor. Living in tribes culture and tradition is everything and mostly is an identity to tell people where we come from. I am glad that you are sharing your stories for many of us out there to be aware. I am sure both of you are becoming the role model for your future generation and the ambassador for your tribes in America and in the world.

Im from the WRR and its super beautiful and the culture is very comforting to me. I been off the rez for a long time and ive had so many good opportunities to become independent because of the native community in the city. I will always remember who I and be proud of who I am. I learned so much about my history as a native, by non native people. Had i stayed theres no doubt i would of been dead and accomplished nothing, Most of my family has died from alcohol drugs and violence. I wouldnt bash where im from theres no other place and no other people, its so much fun On the other hand it does have an alarming rate of crime. I always pray my people have more resources to be uplifted and to stay focused on the culture because its very rich and one of a kind. We need to never forget those that are struggling on the reservation because of the boarding schools. We are still being affected today. Theres so much more to all tribes than what people see.

Both you young'ns did really well in this interview. I thought that the interviewer really ought to have included a couple sets of parents just to secure a balanced answer to his question. It's obvious he was making a play to find loopholes in your answers, which is unfair, considering you both are still very young & expected to answer such a deep, historical & biased question. Even the slight differences in the age group between the guy & girl shows a vast difference in experience just by the way they answer the questions posed.
It's absolutely beautiful how similar our two cultures are. We as Maori are the natives of Aotearoa aka New Zealand. The same history of being invaded, having christianity thrown down our throats, being punished for speaking our tongue. If you can't beat 'em then join 'em was the european motto. Interbreed with the 'Noble Savages' They did try their damnedest to annihilate my people, when that didn't work, the next best thing was to assimilate us. Our history is also full of pain but like yourselves, we too have gone through a renaissance to instill into our children that we have a history that has many conflicts, hurts etc, then we have all the beautiful aspects that set us apart from all those others that call themselves New Zealanders.
We have our native tongue that is finally recognized as the second official language of our own country, lmao! This is secondary to english. We have events similar to your pow wow which I know brings much joy to our youth who radiate when they perform. Our war dances 'Haka' is a great way for our young men to offload their anger. Then there is'Whakairo' which is wood carving. It is fabulous to see what our young men are thinking when they transfer their thoughts into wood they are carving. When one finds his calling as a carver, to see the progress made from their first piece of art is amazing. Whatever the activity, it is always encapsulated with culture. Prayer to our God/s primarily, our ancestors that are waiting for us on the other side, acknowledging the blessings in our lives & the lives of our loved ones. You know how the story goes. I feel so proud that you guys made it too. It really warms my soul to know that we brown skinned, gorgeous looking, strong hearted, clever, thoughtful people never gave up. Most importantly, we held tight to our spirit for life, for love and for each other.

The Englishman I remember reading an article from the Los Angeles Times when I was about 14. It was syndicated in the local newspaper. The issue was the coal mining company tapping into more water resources underground.
Los Angeles paper prefaced the article by pointing out that the Navajo reservation had about 50 percent unemployment and the drunks in the border towns. Then delved into the issue. About 2 years ago it touched on another issue. Again it started with the high unemployment. Haha.
It's funny because we had so much food to eat at home from the ranching and farming we do. And farmers and ranchers on the reservation actually depress the unemployment numbers even when life is good. But we go to school and we are taught that our incomes are way below the national average. It puts pressure on the youth implying that their families are in poverty. It further complicates as how natives are viewed in American society even when the impression is false.
Unfortunately, the national media does that from afar with second or third hand facts. Even information that is outdated but they still run with it. As Native Americans, we just have to ignore those perceptions and continue to progress.

yeah but when your native in a town country area its just not the same. I dont know if you are aware of the suicide rate especially on the wind river reservation but its really scary. I know i been off the rez for a long time and i wish my people had more opportunity to have jobs and transportation. Not only that but to have more native activities going on. I honestly believe that our success will be achieved once we really embrace who we are and never forget what our ancestors went through in those boarding schools. We are a people who have been stripped of everything we are our whole identity taken away.

Bad things happen in everyone's life, wherever people are. There are terrible things that some folks do because they are looking for things they aren't willing to work for, things they think they can get by just taking, and it often leads to terrible outcomes. Some things people can control, others are the results of other people's actions. It's that way in all cultures, but I recognize that Native Americans have these things closer at hand. Young people who are taking control of their lives are making a positive difference among their people. People who are passive in their lives and willing to have life just happen around them, are the ones who have the worst outcomes. Proud of those who are willing to make a difference in their lives and the lives of others.

In the old Way of Life, Tribe means Family. We are not a Community who have committees. And even now, when we do have Community. Family values means more as we Tribal People have been here living this way for thousands of years...not hundreds of years like many of the migrants from other Continents. We were living in Peace and Harmony when the Settlers first made contact with our Tribes during that time. American History does not explain that period very well... about how we truly lived in a "Ceremonial Way of Life" on most of this Continent.

I'm white, so I can't pretend to speak for Native Americans, but I'm also an American studying in Australia, knowing both the history of Aboriginal Australians and Native Americans, I can tell you that it's not so simple as that, taking away the reservation, taking away the last of their land is the last thing any Native American wants, it would destroy their communities. Aboriginal Australians never got reservations, which is something my Aboriginal friends and teachers have often discussed with me, it's a major problem because there's still this idea in Australia that "Aboriginal Australians didn't have a concept of property, therefore we can do whatever we want to their sacred lands and waters. They don't belong anywhere." (To those who don't know, Aboriginal Australians did have a concept of property, this is just an excuse the British came up with in order to claim the entirety of Australia for Britain.)

I am white, of the civilized; I strive to be a 'learned' white. Indigenous people know how to live in the Environments of our planet, we civilized do not. Indigenous people strive to live `In Harmony' with the Environments, while the civilized think that everything was 'created' just for them to do with as they please. There is a civilized tendency to 'modify' the Environment to meet some short-term need, without considering the Environment or the long-term effect. We see all around us the `civilized way' does not work, and that it has devastated many of the Environments of our planet. It is my belief the civilized have much to learn from indigenous people -- important things like how to live on this planet. These are things the civilized must learn soon, because otherwise the civilized 'edifice' will soon come crashing down, quite possible resulting in a planet with few or no 'higher' life-forms. If the civilized continue on their present course, they will bequeath the surface of our planet to the distant descendant of the slow-living single-celled organisms that live a mile or more below the abyssal plain.

Robert Spies that’s why I enjoy my faith. Being Wiccan I can live in harmony with the environment and nature. I’m similar to natives. I respect nature and love this plante. Im also in touch and in tune with my pagan ancestors and follow my tradition. I also do have some native in me too. As far as what I don’t know and neither do my grandparents. They’ve lost touch with that side and anyone who can tell us us deceased.

Shame USA.Govt. should invest in these areas, the reservations. That would give an equal opportunity to natives to use their lives in a better and useful way.At the same time help them in making their lives, while preserving their culture and traditions. But it seems, govt. wants to finish them off slowly,by denying them the job opportunities and other basic needs...In such a scenario, natives need to stick to their roots and traditions and help each other in building a better future, through modern ways...Learn the modern ways, but stick to your roots......Hassan,Kashmir.

The US Government does make investment in these areas and people. I know and work with members of various tribes who leave the reservation for college and trade schools since the opportunities on the reservations are few and far between. These people are awarded special aid from the US Government and third party sources based on tribal status. What's more is there are various grants that are awarded to tribes that cover various needs on the reservations. Your analysis is superficial at best.

@@nmelkhunter1 So I wonder what their chances are compared to other Americans, and how many on a res are given help, in proportion to white Americans. And should help be really steering people away from their home and people. Is that a success, or just perhaps a creaming off by a sick society. I know some go back on the res after study and work, and good on them, but I have read a lot of material down the years from campaigners, and there's a lot of deviance in this system at all levels, and many needy people miss out, but then it's not unlike systems I have worked in within the UK, a place full of crooks, white crooks. I make that as a sweeping statement as I resent the coming of the white man to Turtle Island very, very, very deeply. I lived there in 3 former lives, and fought to remove the white settlers, and invaders, and I would do the same again at the behest of the Great Spirit, Whom I attuned to love and serve, for He too too is a servant of the Great Mystery, and Creator of all the worlds. Some call Him God, but He is most certainly not the One represented in the white man's bibles. The salvation and restitution of the Bird Tribes will come, but through the intervention of the Great Spirit, Who has decreed long go to return the land to the natives. The white men will be no more on Turtle Island, he must return home, for the US was never his land, simple. The Romans eventually left their conquered lands to their indigenous peoples, now the white Europeans have to be forcibly removed by the Great Spirit, and |His many workers. It commences in 2028 Sept ish big time, big nuclear holocaust, N Korea planned for long time, but many red men know of this time, and prepare to receive their lands back. Then no more need for grants systems, and other means of control by white invaders.

@@creativefreedom9143 There have been sacred tribes and lands amongst the whites, and all around the world, which is why the native people of Turtle Island came to know of the Great Spirit. A descendant of King Erik and some Vikings who crossed the Atlantic to Newfoundland, made his way onto the prairies, and became a servant of the highest, passing on spiritual tidings to the natives, who then passed on these tidings to other tribes, so that eventually many of them had seers, herbalists, healers, and spiritual leaders. They were warned of the coming of the white man long before he came, and were clearly told not to fraternise, nor interbreed with him. Sadly, the tribes were not all spiritual, nor unified, and so after many years, these divisions and weaknesses led to the capitulation of the tribes, until only fragments remained of the former glorious cultures. Soon, the Bird Tribes will be revived though, and their lands returned, although I sense they may receive other peoples from Asia, as prophecies indicate this. Let's see. First, the Apocalypse in 2028, WW3 in 2033, and great New Star in 2038, the end of many lands and men, then a New Kingdom of God by about 2056.

"My" tribes got slaughtered by the roman empire and later almost completely erased by christianity by the sword or conversion. There is almost nothing left of my ancestors legacy. But that doesn't count I guess because we where white.... But unlike you, I don't therefor call the Italians oppresors for some shit their ancestors did a 1000 years ago.

I don't understand these people. Why they don't fight for themselves? Why they let to be a toy or an oriental cat in a cage. They keep them in reservates but this is their country. Why US made so many stans for people that don't have any cultural differences but didn't create any for them. Why in free, 21 century's USA they celebrate The Thanksgiving that is still their national celebration as a memory for sloting the Indians? I don't say that they should rebel or make war but fight for their rights and future. So they could say with pride that they feel to be Indian not American and not be afraid of feedback. They should not let history to repeat it selves. They want to be kind and open hearted for americans again but don't know that they can disapeare through that. I know something about that because I am Kashubian and if we wouldn't care about our identity but identify with occupant I guess that we and our tradition, language wouldn't live today. They can be them selves just ones a year or on a competition with a number on they feet just to conntinue their tradition then. I'm glad that they still know they language etc. I can't image a world without any nation or culture that appear on it. I thing that every single one is same important.
