"I really like my house. Don't know if it's going to be there when I get back." Ouch, right in the feels. These aren't just people's houses that are going up. They're homes full of memories. Things that people feel safe and secure in. I've lived in my own home for 30 years. I doubt I'd ever get over losing it to a fire. We have a lot of destructive weather forces in this world but I feel like fire is the scariest. It just consumes everything and leaves ashes behind.

This is why I hate it when people say 'it's ok, they're millionaires'. Do they think money makes it ok when they lose everything special and irreplaceable to them? Or when they and their kids are scared for their lives and that of their neighbors? They are just human like us.

This video he shot is one of the most poignant I've seen. His acknowledgement of fellow firefighters heading into the fray, his own existential realization that he is one of the victims, and his palpable relief after heading through hell is all somehow subtle, yet very honest and deep. I thank him for his service and his willingness to share his experience with others. I can see why you are so proud. Be well.

My daughter is a firefighter from Paradise Ca. Basically fire season was over here in Cal but the company had work for her in Florida and N Carolina, helping after the hurricane there. She was out of the area helping others when the Camp fire rolled into Paradise, destroying her home. (and ours) She was home for Christmas but now she's in Texas, helping after the hurricane there. Texas should feel very lucky to have this team helping out. They have the experience and the determination to see the job through.

The longer a wood-frame house stands, the drier it gets. A living tree stays alive by not drying out. In a drought, the WATER is concentrated in the LIVING vegetation. That's why it seems to make people paranoid. It's just very basic facts -- the fire goes for the driest wood first and can sweep thru going from house to house, burning some of the dead wood off but not killing every living tree especially if some trees and landscaped areas are even minimally watered so that they survive.

I remember working at Kohl's when the Thomas fire hit. It was heartbreaking to see people that lost homes to the fire. You just knew. The look on their face. The fact that they're buying nothing the things you really need, like socks and underwear at full price (it was holiday time, so basically everything but those items were on sale). We were allowed to give them our employee discount in that case, which does help. But it is just heartbreaking that there's nothing you can do to return their life to how it was before

Utility poles are sometimes infused Copper Naphthenate or Creosote as rot protection and even painted with tar. This makes them burn like a torch. The lower part is the most susceptible to rot and the easiest to reach with a brush.

The USA is obsessed with cheap contruction and esthetics, as long as a building looks pretty then it doesn't matter if is made of cardboard and sticks that would never stand a fire or a hurricane, on contrast, México for example is one of the cointries with the lowest fire incidents in the world, just because wood is the least used building material, most homes and buildings are made of bricks and concrete, including the roofing that can satand fires and hectic storms.

Build a house out of bricks in California and it will fall due to an earthquake sooner or later. That’s why here they build them out of wood so they can flex. Do your research

Everyone saying why were buildings burning and not the trees around it. Could be gas lines or any kind of line that are connected to these buildings?

When there is a "warning" get out of it asap.

They texted the warning, which was really dim imo. There could have been other warnings but they weren't set up for it.

I'm very sorry for all the victims who died or lost their relatives/house in that fire, but why are a lot of American houses made entirely of wood?
