It's not returning 'void' _per_ _se_ , it's returning a 'void *', i.e. a 'void pointer'. A void pointer is a generic pointer to an unknown datatype--it needs to be cast to a specific type before it can be dereferenced. You might use it if you can work out what the type is at run time, meaning you wouldn't have to write a separate function for each data type. I think it's generally seen as bad practice though, certainly pretty rare.
