MCM Vintage or True Antique, This Collector District Has It!

My show is over, and for once I have the chance to stay over to shop in this vibrant, urban antique and vintage shopping district! The Sellwood District of Portland, Oregon has come back to life, with a combination of antique malls and vintage boutiques that attract both young hipsters and antique mavens. We're looking to find those bargains we can take to our collectors across the nation...so what will we find here?
We're shopping with a friend today, stopping first at another friend's groovy cool shop where they share space together. Midtown Mod Vintage is a colorful, vibrant and really well put together shop, where the usual Mid-Century Modern favorites live (swung vases, barware, vintage clothing) alongside some surprising specialties like Hawaiiana, vintage travel posters and even Northwest art! But can we find a deal in a place where Paul Frankl furniture, oil paintings of Mt. Hood and Varga pinups are among the offerings? The answer is yes, as we use our superpower of finding the things that don't belong to uncover a Howard Pierce orange peel ewer, a 1920s flapper's purse and an obscure ashtray from a distant midwest college ceramics school. This place is fun and exciting, and we're glad to take some cool things with us!
Then, it's down the street for a truly different experience at Stars Antique Mall, which flanks both sides of the street and offers a mix that starts with mid-century modern, but quickly veers into categories ranging from antique match holders and 1930s store boxes (with their original contents intact) to regional art! Locally made Pacific Stoneware and raku pieces, oddities ranging from a 1902 wedding plate to antique funereal photos (really!), and wares from obscure potteries to fun 1950s toys rest below stone and fiberglass lamps and an odd collection of homemade tin men. Great prices on a small Fenton swung vase, Cleminson's pottery, some cool MCM McCoy Scandia ware and many more goodies make this an antique mall worth revisiting...and we never even got across the street to see the other half!
We are definitely putting the Sellwood District on our list of must-see places, where several other antique shops await our next visit, when I return to sell at the Rose City Vintage Market this October.
