    That scythe is too short for you. A proper scythe you should be able to stand straight, with the heel of the scythe resting that on the ground. Let the heel of the scythe guide the cut as supposed to and just let the tool do the work. The heel of the scythe will place it at the proper height and allow it to glide over rocks and stumps.

      he said " if youll notice (the weed wacker) does a better job closer to the ground".... sir.... that is because you don't know wtf you are doing... I have scythe weeded before, I have owned and used a scythe... when you buy the right size one, and you maintain it like your supposed to, I guarantee you will cut grass just as low to the ground as a weed wacker.

      With an American scythe you have to squat a little bit. With an Austrian scythe you don't.

  • @84greenbear

    I was taught to have the heel of the scythe and the tip of the blade to be as close to the ground as possible and use a twisting motion of your torso. It's very important to have a very sharp blade and to have the scythe adjusted to your body correctly so you don't slouch over. If you don't adjust it right your back will let you know. Very loudly! Especially the next day haha!

    Also the scythe will NEVER leave microplastics! Began using a string trimmer and stumbled upon the enviromental impact and got rid of it. I read about a biodegradable string, which takes ~ 10 years to decompose but still decided against string trimmers. Also, most gas ones pollute MUCH more than a car.

    Great video, thanks for the compare! Many others pointed out errors in scythe sizing and body mechanics when it's used here.. I think this may be the reason you ended up with so much uncut hay. Because the blade was at too much of an angle, it didn't skim along the ground cutting everything in it's path; instead it angled upwards creating diagonal slashes through the grass. Definitely the kind of mistake I could see myself making.. hopefully I'll be able to correct it having watched these videos :-)

  • @theeddorian
    @theeddorian 5 лет назад +2

    You have that scythe too far off the ground for a good cut. I put myself through junior college mowing firebreaks with scythe just like yours. I cleared the break to about 1/2 inch above the ground. I let the heel rest lightly on the ground and and swept in a circular motion, standing pretty well up right. The scythe is a great tool and thanks for showing this. The weed whacker is also noisy, dusty, and costs money to operate.

    In fact, Scythe supply has RUclips videos including one about mowing a lawn with a scythe and it's by an old man (owner, I believe) and the part he mows is super even and short and he talks through the whole thing. It's the right tool and technique that is the secret. Get a European scythe.
    Happy mowing. :)

  • @FortyTwoBlades
    @FortyTwoBlades 6 лет назад +7

    Looks like you could stand to mess around with your nib (side grip) positions and you may need your tang angle adjusted and your edge ground thinner. In dry grass like that having a toothy edge from a coarse stone helps a lot to keep the stalks from slipping off the edge. The edge should only be about 7° per side--VERY thin.

  • @haymaker299
    @haymaker299 4 года назад +1

    Another advantage of the less-shredded hay, besides the bigger volume, is that the nutrition is better captured. As books on haymaking explain (go read them if you want references), the more you knock the leaves off the hay while processing it, the poorer the nutritive value conveyed to the livestock. Not that the nutrition drops to zero (it doesn't), but it can be reduced by quarter or half. The commenter who chastised the presenter about the shredded hay being better for the animal is not as informed as he imagines himself to be. This video is useful, regardless of anyone's whining about the details of his technique or snath position adjustment.

    If a scythe is set right, the cup that the bottom of the blade makes is always in contact with the ground. If it is sharp and the handle is set right, there's no knees involved it's all twist and step.

    Good to learn the old ways for sure. We might be taken back to the old ways if things keep going the way they are with price and technology. Normal farmers can barely afford farm machinery even now. This makes me think that we are being forced out of farming so we are reliant on corporate harvesting only. But tools like the scythe are still being made and sold so buying one now for the fun of it, might keep one ahead of that game.

  • @williamajthompson9166
    @williamajthompson9166 Год назад

    To be fair though. I would have that knocked down quicker and better cut with a trimmer. A couple things calculate in to the efficiency of a trimmer. The brand, what is their engine tech like, what kind of head are you using, brush cutters can be built to have discbine type heads on them that allow for proper heavy weed cutting while not leaving plastic fibers behind.
    Those type of commercial type units will be better suited to make hay on a better budget.
    Then you can get a power head and power scythe. Which is a hedge trimmer attachment for speed cutting field growth areas like around water ways. Get a bike handle power head with harness. Hit the trigger and walk along your paths. Come in up to 26 inch length units. Can make hay pretty quickly without the need of a tractor.

      gregpryorhomestead How do you make a snake trap? I don't want to kill them.

    I am guessing the powered brush cutter (weed trimmer) is considerably more dangerous. I use a brush cutter with a metal blade but as I getting old I would like to try a scythe for safety, and perhaps exercise.

    the problem is, a weed trimmer is not meant for making hay. it is for touch ups after cutting grass.
